"I'm going to beat you!"

A young girl with sky blue eyes that matched the sky, with light blue glasses with black hair sprinted after another boy about her age. She was determined to beat him to the Pokemon Lab to receive their first-ever partner, yet a starter to start off her first adventure. However, it wouldn't have been proper according to this young girl to have a boy beat her first, which made her want to beat him even more.

"No, you aren't." The boy with a red shirt with fiery red eyes snapped matter-of-a-factly, pushing her aside in running and sped to the Lab, kicking dust and sand in her face. According to him, it would be embarrassing to be beaten by a girl, and even more embarrassed to be beaten by a loser like her. "I'm much better than you, Joyce, and there is absolutely no way that you can beat a winner like me."

The girl who was recognized as Joyce turned red in the face, clenching her fists, twisting her eyebrow in anger. "Did you just say you are a winner?" She asked him, baring her teeth at him while dashing after. "I agree! Winner of all losers you are!" She caught up, leaning forward, squeezing her eyes shut. "I'm a winner of all winners! And there is no way you can beat me, Lucas!"

"Kids!" A voice snapped as it echoed in the town of New Bark Town. The two finally stopped not only to catch a breath but to face the person who had said it himself. "All they do is argue. They have no knowledge furthermore." A person with red hair and a red coat muttered, pointing at Joyce and Lucas. "You are the people who caused most trouble of all of the kids who rush to get their starters."

The two of them knew this 20-year-old boy, as they rolled their eyes. "Silver, I bet you were trying to beat Gold as well to the Pokemon Lab, right?" Lucas snapped, as Joyce saw her chance to sneak through.

Gold stepped out of his house and joined in. Gold had no difference ever since he took Cyndaquil, only a bit taller and his voice was lower. His Pokemon although, did not change looks. "Nope," he answered for him. "I got there first until Silver decided to sneak in, and he took-"

He didn't finish his sentence- Silver had punched Gold in the belly, causing him to gawk in pain, as Silver muttered something under his breath. Joyce had sprinted silently, leaving the curious Lucas standing there. "Go on," Gold said, smiling in pain. "I think that girl is trying to beat you," He pointed.

Lucas literally jumped. "She is?!" He screamed. He dashed to the direction Joyce was speeding at, as he heard the hysterical laughs bursting from her, as he cursed, "Joyce Robinfire! You are the trickiest yet most intelligent girl I had ever met!"

Joyce looked back, still laughing hard. Still swiftly running and keeping her distance against Lucas, she bumped into a young man and looked up, touching her head to reduce the pain. "I'm sorry!" She apologized fastly, as the man turned to look at her. He had a beard and brown hair, with a white vest and black glasses.

Lucas ran up to her. "Not only tricky and intelligent, you are clumsy and troublesome too," He murmured in her ear, as she swatted him away as if he was a fly. The man helped Joyce up and smiled. "It's okay. I'm Professor Elm, and if I'm not mistaken-" He edged his glasses and pulled out a clipboard, and looked back. "You are Joyce and Lucas, correct? The two babies that were a month apart."

"Yes, we are," The two decades stated irritably, as the millionth person had said that all these ten years. "And no need to clarify, we heard that many times," Lucas snapped at the Professor. Elm grinned harder and laughed. "You two have the same personality as well. Impatience. Well, I guess I do have some starters reserved for you two,"

"Really?!" Joyce squealed, as Lucas gave a face that meant 'You-are-a-weirdo" and backed away. "I mean, I really want a Cyndaquil." She looked at Elm in admiring eyes, as if she wanted a Cyndaquil now.

"Yes, yes, Cyndaquil is one of the starters. This one's tough, it fires up every battle and when it needs too." Elm nodded, as he looked back at the Lab. "Well, Lucas, what is your plans for your new partner or starter?" He asked, eager to know.

Lucas gave a quick glance at Joyce, and back. "Well, if Joyce is choosing a Cyndaquil that is a Fire-Type, then I'm definitely going for the Water-Type, Totodile!" He shot back, as Joyce gave him a dirty look.

"Then I change my mind!" Joyce shouted out, glaring at Lucas. "If Water-Types are weak against Grass-Types, Then a Chikorita is worth my place!" She declared, as the young Pokemon Professor sweat-dropped.

"Huh? Since when did I want a Water-Type like Totodile?" Lucas snorted, pretending he never wanted a Totodile before. "I dream of traveling with a Cyndaquil every dream I have! So the Fire's mine!"

The two went one for half an hour, as Professor Elm actually went back in the Lab without them noticing and came back with his Smoochum to use Hypnosis, causing him to fall asleep. At last, Joyce threw her arms in the air and yelled, "Fine! Then the Cyndaquil's mine, and the Totodile's yours." She concluded. "No excuses,"

Smoochum rolled her eyes as she jumped on Professor Elm, causing him to awake. "Huh?" He said drowsily, and finally looking at the two. "Well, done arguing over which starter is which?" He asked, hinting his wish that the answer was yes.

"Yes," Lucas stated, nodding at Joyce. "I'm taking Totodile and she's taking the Cyndaquil, like the first deal." He looked at Joyce for an agreement, as she nodded truthfully, as they both watched the Professor fall on the floor. "That was your first arrangement! Why didn't you stick with it?" He wailed.

Lucas and Joyce exchanged guilty glances as Lucas helped the Professor up. "Er... Sorry, sir... May we please get our starters and Pokedex and leave you in peace...?" He asked as Joyce elbowed him as he shot a glare at her. The Professor got up, and snapped, "Okay, but please hurry!"

As they entered, the assistants packed up papers and were researching the different kinds of Pokemon, as they got up from their chair and waved at the newcomers. "Welcome to Elm's Lab! It's where you get your Pokedex, Poke-Balls, and Starter!"

Joyce smiled and waved back at all of the other people. "Hello, there! Nice to meet you, assistants! I hope life being at Elm's is great!" She tugged Lucas' sleeve and hissed, "Reply back you Rattata-brain!"

Lucas snapped himself out of amazement and asked, "Huh?"

Joyce raised her hand and slammed it on his head. "You dumb-dumb," she muttered, as she followed Professor Elm, dragging a confused Lucas behind. "You were supposed to greet them. What a piece of embarrassment."

Professor Elm spun around and snapped, "There isn't much time! Choose your Pokemon starter!" He started getting impatient. He muttered, "Before all the trouble starts at three in the afternoon!"

Joyce poked into one of the Poke-Balls, which revealed a small creature that had a smile and a fiery back. "Cynda! Cyndaquil!" She greeted Joyce with a small squeak of joy, as Joyce couldn't resist such a cute Pokemon.

Lucas rolled his eyes. "She's just like you, cute, adorable, but very innocent compared to what you look." He opened his Poke-Ball, revealing a crocodile, who smiled and gave a small chomp and leaped into his arms. "Toto! Dile!"

Joyce muttered with Cyndaquil in her arms. "That Totodile is just like you, acts so nice to his friends but hates and becomes very arrogant to others." She sighed and looked up at the still smiling Cyndaquil. "Like me."

Elm stomped his foot. "Well, new nicknames?" He asked, trying to sound cheerful as both rookie trainers felt suspicious of something happening that is trying to make the two leave early. "Yes," Joyce said stiffly. "Smile. It must be." She turned to Lucas and snapped, "And your Totodile better not be called Frown, or Upside-Down-Smile."

"Okay, let's just say I don't want it to be Frown-or whatever," Lucas snapped back. He looked at his Totodile, who was baring his teeth as Smile playfully, as Smile leaped down from Joyce's arms and swiped a swift paw that Totodile barely dodged.

"I'll name it Chomp," Lucas decided, as he picked Chomp up, not hugging it or anything. Chomp dashed upon his shoulders, giving a chomp of an agreement, as Smile smiled at the red trainer and the blue crocodile, as she jumped into a rookie that had blue eyes and glasses. "Well, good luck with your Pokemon." Elm congratulated.

He waved, as he called, "Good luck on your adventures! Stick together!"

* * *

"Professor Elm didn't really mean stick together, right?" Lucas asked Joyce lamely, as Joyce walked close to him. "Well, he said to stick together, so I guess he means we travel together...?" Joyce ended up her sentence with a question.

"Well, I'm not so satisfied and happy with that." Lucas snapped at her, as Joyce shot back harder, "It's harder for me since a person who is much more arrogant than me is stuck with me!" She bared her teeth at him.

"At least our Pokemon get along," Lucas muttered as the two stared at Chomp and Smile, who were chasing each other, smiling and laughing as Chomp tickled the belly of Smile, as Smile pounced on Chomp.

Joyce narrowed her eyes and picked up Smile, who seemed confused and gave Joyce a look as if she was saying, 'Why stop? I and Chomp were just starting to have fun until you and Lucas had to ruin it!' She snapped at it, "I and Lucas will not travel together, that's for sure, so please make it the last time you see Chomp as a friend..." She found herself being mean to her starter, as she hugged it to squeeze out its sad feelings.

Lucas picked up Chomp, as Chomp growled and bit on Lucas' shoulder lightly as if it was a warning or a threat. Lucas rolled his eyes and snapped, "Chomp, Smile isn't a friend. She will never be a friend again. She will be our fighting enemy, and foe... Unless we were tagged together for a Double Battle."

The two starters jumped off of their shoulders, as they shook hands. Smile hesitated, as she smiled and said, "Quil!" as Chomp looked up and grinned. "Dile!" He agreed, as the two shook paws, laughing. They returned to the two trainers, still grinning at each other.

"I wish I have a Pokemon Translator," Joyce muttered. "What's so happy about leaving your friend to part ways?" She looked up at Lucas and said, "Lucas... Good luck, I guess..." She started, until she laughed. "Race you to Cherrygrove City!"

Lucas looked up from his mixture of sadness and happiness as he growled, "You rascal!" As he raced after, as the two starters spun around startled, and shook their head to bear out their confusion, as they dashed behind as if they were saying 'Wait for us!'

As the two trainers part ways and try to get to Cherrygrove City first, what expectations shall they meet there?

"Beat it, Elm," A person in a black suit came, as three others came with a red, bloody "R" on their black suits. Professor Elm looked up from his studies and stood up. "I made sure trainers came so they took the Pokemon. They are no more. Smile, Chomp, and Lily are taken."

The black-suited grunt growled, "You did that to protect this useless Pokemon! They deserve to be experimenting!" He launched out a Pokemon which revealed a Crobat, as he ordered, "Crobat, use Confuse Ray!"

The Professor closed his eyes as the room was shaken by the powerful Confuse Ray, until he could see nothing but darkness, and the diziness shades of purple blinding his eyes, as he whispered, "At least the kids and Pokemon are safe."
