Chapter 3
Breaking Dawn: The Ultimate Faceoff
When Anastasia said she wanted to see the Cullen's again, she never thought she would be seeing them before a battle. The Cullen's versus the Volturi.
Anastasia's wide eyes darted at the coven across the field from them. She could make out the Cullen clan, but there were many other vampires who she had never seen before. Aro, Caius, and Marcus walked at the front and behind them were the high ranking Volturi members, including Anastasia. Irina, the blonde who had ratted the Cullen's out, seemed surprised to see a couple of similar blondes in the opposing crowd.
Irina was the cause behind the battle. After she supposedly saw that the Cullen's had made an immortal child, a vampire law that was never to be broken, the Volturi reacted as they had ages ago. An immortal child was dangerous and it even put Anastasia on edge.
Ana's eyes landed on the little girl who stood between Edward and Bella. She couldn't help but think the child was adorable, immortal or not. She sent her prayers out to Edward and his family.
A sudden howl echoed through the field. From the trees behind the Cullen's, a pack of werewolves emerged out from the shadows. They stopped behind the vampires, showing that their loyalty stood with the Cullen coven. Anastasia took a deep breath as she removed her cloak's hood. Carlisle stepped forward.
"Aro. Let us discuss things how we used to. In a civilized matter."
"Fair words, Carlisle. But a little out of place given the battalion you've assembled against us."
"I can promise you, that was never my intent. No laws have been broken."
"We see the child. Do not treat us like fools!" Caius hissed angrily.
"She is not an immortal! These witnesses can attest to that. Or you can look," Carlisle said before gesturing to the child, "See the flush of human blood in her cheeks."
"Artifice!" Caius exclaimed. Aro stopped him.
"I will collect every asset of the truth but from someone more central to the story... Edward," Aro said with a sickly smile, "As the child clings to your newborn mate, I assume you are involved."
Edward turned to Bella and his child. Hesitate, he let go of his mate and walked towards the Volturi. Aro grabbed Edward's hand and began to invade his thoughts. As the vampire consumed Edward's thoughts, Ana glanced back at the Cullen's. She didn't see her mate anywhere nor felt his presence close by. She let out a soft whine.
When Aro let go of his hand, he looked at Edward gleefully.
"I'd like to meet her."
Edward looked broken as if those were the exact words he hoped to never hear from Aro. But he knew better than to disobey.
He turned to Bella. The newborn clutched onto her daughter's hand and led her towards the large group of opposing vampires. They stopped and Bella glanced back, pleading for someone to back them up. A vampire about the size of Felix stepped up, and Ana recognized him as one of the Cullen's. A wolf also walked with the child and they joined Edward's side.
"Ah! Young Bella... Immortality becomes you," Aro commented. He then turned his attention to the small child. It was so quiet, even Ana could hear her heartbeat. Her master let out a shrill laugh as he got excited.
"I hear her strange heart," Aro then extended his hand, offering it to the young girl.
The child looked up to meet her mother's eyes. Bella gave her a reassuring smile.
"Hello, Aro," the little girl greeted softly. Aro smiled and waited for her to take his hand. The child looked at his hand for a spilled-second before reaching out and placing her own on Aro's cheek. With wide eyes, he let the girl sink her own memories into Aro.
"Magnifico," he whispered.
Out of nowhere, he pulled away.
"Half mortal, half immortal!" He announced. Bella pulled her child back.
"Conceived and carried by this newborn, while she was still human."
"Impossible!" Caius exclaimed. Aro turned sharply to him.
"You think they'd fool me, brother?" Aro snapped. Bella and Edward walked back to their coven, the wolf giving a single warning snap towards the Volturi leaders before joining his own.
"Bring the informer forward," Caius commanded. Anastasia led Irina to the front. Everyone else moved to stand firm in a row.
"Is that the child you saw?" Caius questioned. Irina glanced to the floor.
"I'm not sure," she stuttered. Caius wasn't satisfied with her answer.
"Jane..."
"She's different!" Irina suddenly said, "This child is bigger."
"Then your allocations were false."
"The Cullen's are innocent. I take full responsibility for my mistake," Irina said honestly. She then turned to the blonde girls with the Cullen's and gave a sad smile.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. Caius gave Felix and Ana a look. Anastasia moved away and allowed Felix to take over.
"Caius no!"
But Edward was too late and Irina's body was torn to pieces. Caius set her broken body on fire.
The Volturi all looked up when a sudden scream was heard. The blondes were trying to fight their way to the Volturi out of pure rage. They were quickly stopped by everyone, and Edward managed to calm both down.
Once calm, the vampire tried to make his way back to his mate and child. But with a single look from Aro, Jane was given all the permission she needed to strike.
She concentrated her eyes on Edward and began.
"Pain."
Ana watched as Edward fell to his knees in pain. The twisting torture clear on his face, she wondered how he could take it, but Bella leaped forward to protect her mate. In seconds, Edward was able to stand back on his two feet without any trouble.
Anastasia glanced at Jane and saw her desperately looking at everyone from across the field, trying to inflict torture on someone but failing.
Bella gave Jane a smirk. Anastasia understood. Bella was a shield.
Jane grew furious and took steps forward to attack but was stopped by Alec.
Everyone grew defensive, and even Alec was about to unleash his blinding smoke on the opposite side but was stopped by Aro himself.
"Aro, you see there is no law broken here," Carlisle spoke.
"Agreed. But, does it then follow that there is no danger... For the first time in our history, humans pose a threat to our kind! Their modern technology has given birth to weapons that could destroy us. Maintaining our secret has never been more imperative. And such times, only the known is safe. Only the known is tolerable, and we know nothing of what this child will become. Can we live with such uncertainty?" Aro's speech was getting to many, Anastasia could tell. All she wanted to do was turn and run the other way until she was far in Canada, but she knew she couldn't escape.
"Spare ourselves a fight today, only to die tomorrow," Aro finished. Ana felt a quick change in her surroundings as new vampires entered the scene. She immediately recognized both and internally whined. Although she wanted to see her mate again, she hoped he would have the brains to stay far away from the battle.
"Ah! Alice." Anastasia watched as the pixie girl and her mate walked out from the edge of the forest.
As they neared Aro, Demetri stepped forward and pushed them back. Ana glared at Demetri for touching her mate but couldn't move. One false action and he could be paying the price. Ana didn't even know his name.
"My dear, dear Alice we're so glad to see you here after all."
"I have evidence the child won't be a risk to our kind," Alice wasted no time in sharing her piece. She extended her hand to Aro.
"Let me show you."
Demetri let Alice step forward. He then turned to smack the boy's face but was stopped by a small hand. Demetri growled down to Anastasia, who was at the end of the hand with a vicious glare.
"I suggest you watch your lose hand, Demetri. It would be a shame if one day you suddenly were without it," she hissed softly. Demetri immediately stepped back. The fury in Anastasia's eyes was nothing that Demetri had seen. He knew when to back down. Ana's mate looked at her lovingly but turned his attention to Alice, making sure his adoptive sister was okay.
"So you see, that is your future. Unless you decided on a different course," Alice said after she yanked her hand away from Aro.
"We cannot alter our course, the child still poses a great threat."
Anastasia rolled her eyes. Why Caius wanted to fight was beyond her, for if a battle did break out, he wouldn't even participate. Aro had mentioned it to Ana as well, she probably wasn't to fight either. If the fight was in favor of the Cullen's Ana was to flee back to the palace with an escort.
But now, as she watched Alice bring out a surprise witness who happened to be just like the child, Anastasia wasn't sure she even wanted to return to Volterra after this.
"Dear ones, there is no danger here. We will not fight today," Aro finally said. Caius gave his brother a dark glare but accepted it nonetheless.
Aro looked at each of his followers until his eyes landed on Anastasia. She kept his stare until he turned back to Alice.
"I think Anastasia should stay with us, Aro. After all, she is Jasper's mate," Alice said. Anastasia's head snapped to the pixie-like girl, but she only received a bright smile.
Her mate's name is Jasper?
Anastasia found herself falling in love with his name.
Aro glanced at Ana with careful eyes.
"Indeed... My dearest Anastasia would be happier here," Aro confirmed. He stepped forward and reached for the necklace he had gifted Ana the first day they met. She had been told by him to never take it off. But there, Aro yanked on the necklace to break it off. He looked down at the now broken piece of jewelry and smiled, turning his back on a bewildered Anastasia.
Marcus and Caius watched intensely. It wasn't like Aro to let go of Ana so easily. Something he saw in Alice's vision had frightened him.
And even after Aro had agreed for Anastasia to stay with the Cullen's, Alec put up a fight.
"We can't just leave her here! She has to come back with us!" He insisted. Aro glared at him.
"Anastasia belongs with her true mate. She will not be returning to Volterra with us."
Jane gave a satisfied smile. She grabbed her twin's arm and ran back the way they came from. Everyone but Anastasia followed.
She stared after her coven. She didn't know whether to be offended they let her leave just like that as if she was nothing or if she should feel privileged she would never see the cynical coven again.
Aro paused before completely disappearing. He looked at Alice and Bella, and his eyes lingered lastly on Anastasia. He let out a sigh.
"Such a prize."
And he vanished into the woods. Ana stood there, next to Alice solemnly. She suddenly snapped towards the small vampire.
"What exactly did you see in that vision of yours, Alice Cullen?"
