*Chapter Fifty Seven* {The Hybrid}
Elena casually glances through the crowd of her birthday party. She catches a glimpse of her brother's girlfriend and does a double look. To her disbelief, Alvina is making her way through the crowd. Unable to help herself, Elena pushes her way toward the fairy.
"Alvina," Elena calls out from behind her. Alvina stops and Elena notices her shoulders drop. She knows the two haven't exactly gotten along in the past but Elena just has to talk to her. "Can I talk to you?... Please," She begs softly yet desperately.
Alvina spins on her heels to look at the doppelganger. The last thing Alvina wanted to do was talk to the teenager but she gives in upon seeing the state she's in. Elena looked as if she had hardly slept and on the verge of a breakdown. Besides, Alvina promised to say something to her for Jeremy.
"Come on, let's get some air," Alvina brushes past her and towards the back. Elena wordlessly follows. The two of them walk out into the night and away from the crowd. There weren't as many people outside than there were inside. Still, they continued to stroll through the grass until they were out of earshot of any human.
"How-How's Jeremy?" Elena asks. Alvina smiles at her softly.
"He's adjusting," Alvina tells her. "He's healing and things are getting better,"
"And him and Klaus?" Elena questions cautiously.
"Elena Enzo and I have been around long enough for you to understand how this bond works. Even if it's just a little understanding... He's hesitant and he's fighting it off but eventually, he's going to cave. Klaus is our mate and we will have him," Elena hangs her head a bit and nods.
"I don't understand your... bond..." Elena admits. "But obviously it's important to Jeremy," Alvina stays quiet as Elena goes through her thoughts. Eventually, the teen comes to a stop and turns toward the fairy. "Is he happy?"
"He's getting there," Alvina tells her. "Like said, it's been an adjustment but Jeremy's getting the hang of it... If it makes you feel better he misses you. Misses you and Jenna a lot."
"Can't he come home?" Elena asks.
"Not now," She shakes her head. "Maybe down the road he can visit but Klaus is watching us pretty closely. If Jeremy comes now, Klaus will follow. Something tells me he isn't going to be happy you're still breathing," Alvina reminds her. Elena sighs slowly and runs her fingers through her hair.
"And what about Stefan?" Elena asks, her eyes lighting up with a hint of hope.
"He might be easier to convince Klaus to let go," Alvina admits. "But it will still take time," Elena's face falls. "Look, I know this isn't easy. All you can do right now is be there for Jenna, she needs you. I know this transition can't be easy for her. Be there for her and live your life. Be with your friends, have fun. Don't make our leaving Mystic Falls, lying to our mate, and keeping you safe in vain."
"Easier said than done," Elena grumbles. Alvina shrugs a bit.
"It'll get easier... Just know that Jeremy is alive, safe, and content on the way to happiness. Stefan is brooding, pouting, and being a vampire. All will be fine," Alvina assures her. "Just don't get yourself killed. That'll really annoy things," Elena smiles just a smidge. "It's your birthday Elena, go back to your party,"
"What about you?" She asks. Alvina smiles.
"I think this is a good time to dip," Alvina tells her. "I'm not good with goodbyes and if I go back in I'm not quite sure Damon will let me leave,"
"He'll be upset," Elena points out.
"Damon's got the mood swings of a teenage girl on her period. He'll get over it," Alvina scoffs. Elena smiles broadly despite her attempt to reign it in. "Give Jenna our love and I'll try to send Jeremy over when we're able,"
"Thank you for looking after him," Elena tells her. Alvina smiles and spins into her fairy form.
"That's one thing you'll never have to thank me for," Alvina tells her. Elena hardly processes her words as she stares at her wings mesmerized. The looks make Alvina a little smug as she flutters them for extra effect. "Happy birthday, Elena," Alvina says before disappearing into the woods.
By the time Alvina returns to where her mates had been she notices they've already moved on. It didn't bother her. She knew she'd be able to find Enzo and Jeremy no matter where they went. She follows her instincts into the Smoky Mountains.
"You okay? Is Ray getting heavy?" Klaus's voice reaches Alvina's ears. She smirks flying faster to get to them.
"I'm fine," Stefan grumbles.
"You sure about that? You know, we've been walking for quite some time now. If you need some water or a little sit-down..." Klaus continues to pester.
Before Stefan could respond with some depressing answer Alvina flies toward them. She had been too small and fast for humans to see but she grew in size right before latching herself to Klaus's back. He had sensed her barely a second before she clung to him. He hadn't realized just how fast she was.
"I've been flying for an awfully long time, carry me?" Alvina whispers in his ear. Klaus grins, his fingers digging into her bare thighs. She peaks her head around to grin at her other two mates, sending them both a wink, before resting her head in the crook of his neck.
"Is our little problem solved?" Klaus asks, softly as he senses the fatigue in her body. She hums positively.
'Elena's fine... She misses you but she's alright,' Alvina tells Jeremy. She can feel his mind relaxing.
'Thank you,' He responds quietly. Alvina doesn't respond but sucks in a quick breath when Klaus slings her around to his front. Her ankles cross around his waist as he hugs her to his chest.
"Relax," He whispers, cradling her comfortably so that she doesn't have to hold herself up. "Rest," He murmurs. Alvina smiles, renuzzling her head into his neck. She breathes in his scent and finds herself drifting off.
Klaus smiles to himself and holds her closer while being mindful of her wings. She hadn't bothered to return to her human form, not that he minded. He knew she felt more comfortable in this form compared to her other one. He understood it better than anyone.
He'd even go as far as to say he preferred her like this rather than her hide to blend in with the humans. She looked more radiant like this, more natural. Plus, he would admit to himself that the dress that accompanied this form left little to the imagination. The desire he felt for her was accompanied by a strong sense of possessiveness.
He wouldn't mind staring at her beautiful, curvy form as long as they knew who she belonged to. Everyone could stare in envy knowing they could never and will never have her as he, Enzo, and Jeremy can.
A smirk comes to his lips as he thinks about having her on his arm with others looking upon them with covetousness.
Before his mind can spiral anymore he forces the thoughts out of his mind before he takes her away to a more private part of the forest.
The four of them continue to walk through the forest. Enzo and Jeremy walk closer to Klaus. The both of them feeling the need to be closer to Alvina while Stefan keeps his distance happy to have some quiet.
A little bit before they reach the pack, Alvina wakes up. She could sense the pack's presence even in her sleep. Klaus reluctantly sets her on the ground. She leans into Enzo as her mind slowly unfogs.
When they enter the area where the pack is Klaus walks in front of their little group with Stefan. Enzo and Alvina hang back standing practically on top of Jeremy. He was the most vulnerable which brought forward their protective instincts.
"Ray! Oh, my God. What's going on? Who are you?" A woman gasps, her heart rate escalating.
"The important question is, who am I? Please forgive the intrusion. My name is Klaus,"
"You're the hybrid," The woman realizes quietly. Despite being in front of him, Klaus's three mates can see the smirk growing on his face.
"You've heard of me. Fantastic."
"Oh, here we go," Alvina whispers, rolling her eyes. Klaus shoots her a grin with a wink.
"Should we get comfortable?" Enzo wonders, glancing to the two mates to his right.
"I'm sitting in the sun," Alvina declares pulling Jeremy along with her. "I'm far too pale. I'm starting to look like a vampire," She perches herself upon a log. Jeremy and Enzo sit on either side of her.
"And what's wrong with vampires?" Enzo asks, arching an eyebrow with a cool grin.
"Nothing," Alvina smiles toward him. "But there are already two vampires in this bond. The last thing I want is to blend in when I was born to stand out,"
"Baby, you'll always stand out. You're too beautiful to blend in," Jeremy flirts. Alvina sends him a wink and presses a kiss on his cheek. "Seriously? That's all I get?" Alvina giggles and presses her lips onto his with enough force to make him lean into Enzo. The vampire growls lowly, his hands crushing the bark of the log as his nose brushes against the side of Jeremy's head.
Stefan clears his throat hoping to break them up before they throw all fucks out the window. Klaus, who had been telling his story to his unwilling crowd, watches them intently. He could feel his resolve breaking and if his need to make hybrids wasn't so important to him he'd have killed them all and sent Stefan away for the remainder of the week while he ravages his mates.
"It's fascinating, actually..." Klaus tells the pack. His voice sounds distant as his attention continues to focus on his mates, who take their time pulling away from each other. His eyes soak up every tender kiss and lingering touch. "A werewolf who isn't beholden to the moon, a vampire who doesn't burn in the sun..." His voice grows stronger as he refocuses on the situation at hand compared to the little show his mates displayed. "A true hybrid,"
As if he had been waiting for a cue, Ray shoots up with a dramatic gasp.
"Excellent timing, Ray. Very dramatic," Klaus smirks.
"What's happening to me?" Ray asks panics.
"Stefan?" Klaus motions toward the blond vampire. Stefan steps forward while Klaus steps toward his mates. Alvina grins up at Klaus while soaking up the sun.
"Are any of you human? Your friend here needs human blood to complete his transition to vampire. If he doesn't get it, he'll die," Stefan explains.
"What about him?" One of the men motions to Jeremy. The teenager tenses. Alvina growls pressing a possessive hand on his thigh. A second later the man falls to the ground without his heart.
"Anyone else wants to make a suggestion like that?" Enzo questions looking through the crowd with edgy calmness. "No? Good," Enzo allows the heart to roll off his fingers. He licks the blood off his hand as he retakes his seat beside his mates.
Enzo tucks Jeremy under his arm. The teen leans into his side while his fingers nervously fiddle with Alvina's hand. Enzo's nose nestles into Jeremy's hair as a small purr-like sound comes from his chest in a successful attempt to calm his human down.
"You!" Klaus nominates loudly. The attention turns away from Jeremy as the hybrid strides towards a human. A woman tries to protest but Klaus strangles her while Stefan pushes the now bleeding human in front of Ray.
"If you don't drink it, Ray, I will," Stefan warns him. "Problem is I don't know how to stop,"
"It's the new order, sweetheart. You join us, or you die," Klaus whispers.
"I'd rather die than be a vampire," She spits.
"Wrong choice," Klaus growls forcing her to drink his blood as Ray drinks from the human. "She'll thank me for that later," Klaus states snapping the girls next. "Okay... Who's next?" Klaus smirks, his yellow eyes and fangs coming forward.
Some try to escape, some try to fight back but eventually, all the werewolves are in the transition process. All they had to do was wait.
"They're dead. They're all dead," Ray whimpers. Klaus turns to him.
"Ah, he's through his transition. He should be feeling better soon,"
"So, this is your master plan? Build an army of hybrid slaves?" Stefan interrogates.
"No, not slaves. Soldiers, comrades,"
"For what war, might I ask?"
"Oh, you don't arm yourself after the war has been declared, Stefan," Klaus tsks. "You build your army so big that no one dares pick a fight,"
"What makes you so sure that they'll be loyal?" Stefan arches his eyebrows.
"Well, it's not difficult to be loyal when you're on the winning team. That's something you'll learn once you shake that horribly depressive chip off your shoulder," Klaus explains.
"That's why you're uh... You're keeping me around? To witness my attitude adjustment?" Stefan wonders. Klaus ignores him for a moment as he kneels in front of Ray.
"You'll know why I'm keeping you around when I've decided that I want you to know," Klaus says, examining his first hybrid creation. "Something's wrong," He murmurs. Alvina shares a look with Enzo and Jeremy before standing up. Enzo tightens his grip around Jeremy.
"That shouldn't be happening, should it?" Stefan asks, noticing Ray's eyes bleeding.
"Well, obviously," Klaus snaps.
"You said it was gonna feel better," Ray whimpers, shaking in pain. "Why doesn't it feel better?"
"Some master race," Stefan snarks.
"Lose the attitude," Klaus snaps. A second later one of the women gasps awake. "Derek, come feed your girlfriend," Klaus orders. The human stands and sways on his feet.
Alvina nibbles at her bottom lip as she stares at Ray. Something was going wrong and she couldn't help but wonder if this would happen to the rest of them.
In a heartbeat, Ray is dashing away from the spot he had been sitting in. He raced in Alvina's direction but the fairy flies out of his path. The sick hybrid doesn't bother to try and catch her. He continues running away from the camp as Alvina lands by Enzo and Jeremy. Klaus glances at her before turning his gaze to Stefan.
"Go get him," Klaus orders. Stefan sighs but does as told.
'Stay by Enzo,' Alvina tells Jeremy through their mental party line. 'Something tells me this isn't going to end well,'
'A dozen or so possibly sick hybrids, what could go wrong?' Enzo presses his lips together in a thin line.
'We'll be alright,' Alvina says hoping to soothe Jeremy's growing anxiety. 'Klaus's blood is the cure to their bite. They're newly transitioned, they're no match for us' She reminds him. 'Enzo's too well trained, I'm too fast, and Klaus is too strong for them to win against us,'
'While that's true, I still don't like this,' Jeremy comments.
'Neither do we,' Enzo agrees.
'Stay with Jeremy... If anything happens let Klaus and me handle it,' Alvina says, already making her way toward one of the already awake transitioned hybrids. Enzo growls his disapproval of her plan but knew Jeremy needed more protection now than she did.
Alvina kneels in front of a girl. She's showing the same symptoms as Ray. Her eyes flicker to Klaus. Her heart sinks knowing that his proud and happy grin was going to be washed away with this failure.
Then came the thoughts on why this is failing for him. Is Elena being alive causing this outcome? Is she being alive preventing Klaus from reaching a goal he's had set for centuries? She felt a pang of guilt as she's once again divided between helping one mate reach a goal to achieve happiness and helping the other mate keep his sister alive and safe.
The night began to take over. Alvina could sense Jeremy's fatigue but noticed him fighting it. She knew he was worried. He worried for not only his own safety but for her own, Enzo, Klaus, and Stefan as well. Just when things were looking as if they were going to settle down, it seemed they were about to become tense once again.
"Klaus," Alvina whispers, watching all the transitioned vampires standing up. They stagger through the camp as if they were zombies instead of vampires.
"Bloody hell," Klaus grumbles. Alvina's eyes begin to glow. Fangs of her own protrude from her gums. The forest around her comes to life allowing her to see everything in more detail and more vibrancy than the others.
Alvina sends a glance at Jeremy. He's standing at the edge of the camp with Enzo protectively in front of him. Knowing Jeremy is protected, she begins to help Klaus get rid of the problems.
She flies around the camp using her magic to put an invisible type barrier around Enzo and Jeremy. The hybrids could break through it they really wanted too but the magic was making their instincts go haywire, practically forcing them to keep their distance.
Because of this, the hybrids kept their attention mainly on Klaus. They couldn't keep up with Alvina. She had shrunken in size and was flying too fast for them to register her form.
She used her strength to rip them apart and even set them on fire. The last thing she wanted was for a bunch of hiking humans to stumble upon their bodies and ask questions. Questions that would bring whatever's left of Augustine back into the equation.
When all the failed hybrids were dead, Alvina grew to her normal size. While Klaus was clean, blood is spattered over her dress and wings with a few specs on her face.
Enzo approaches Alvina. His eyes look her over. She glances at Jeremy only to notice him walking up to Klaus slowly. Enzo regains her attention when he leans in and kisses her face where the blood specs are.
"I'm alright," Alvina whispers. Enzo smiles, caressing her face. She leans into his touch before snuggling into her chest.
"You did good, baby girl," Enzo whispers. Alvina's wings flutter causing Enzo to smirk and hold her tighter.
"Are-Are you alright?" Jeremy asks. Klaus takes a few seconds to look at him. The original hybrid doesn't have to answer, Jeremy can see it in his eyes. "I'm sorry things didn't work out," Klaus clenches his jaw before snapping.
"I did everything I was told!" He shouts. Jeremy tries not to flinch. He understands Klaus's anger, his frustration. "I should be able to turn them. I broke the curse. I killed the werewolf. I killed the vampire. I killed the..." Klaus stops himself. He may be angry, furious even, but he didn't want Jeremy to be in pain as well.
"Maybe there's a way to figure this out?" Jeremy suggests, ignoring the almost mention of his 'dead' sister. "There has to be someone who has the answer," Klaus growls lowly. He didn't want to think of his next move at the moment, he just needed a moment.
Without thinking, Jeremy wraps his arms around the hybrid. Klaus tenses and Jeremy almost pulls away. However, the teen holds on until Klaus relaxes and reciprocates the embrace.
"We'll figure it out," Jeremy whispers. "We spent almost all summer looking for these wolves, we can't just give up now,"
Klaus closes his eyes and holds Jeremy tighter.
