Chapter 12: Checking In
"Is he your crush? I heard you talking about him earlier this morning when we were eating breakfast." Thank goodness my complexion hid my blush, because I cannot with this child. She's only been here for a day.
"You are blushing." The child giddily claps her hands.
"Get out my office." I point to the door and she laughs getting up, moving to leave. Though I found her slightly irritating, I couldn't help the way my lips tugged up slightly.
"Oh." She turns back around.
"What does it mean when you said you wanted to be ravished desperately?" My jaw drops, Gene foolishly doubled over, with tears falling from her eyes.
"Oh goodness child. You're very forward with your questions aren't you." Gene tells her, making her blush.
"When I found Mom's treasure chest, the book To Please or To be Pleased, said at one point that you wanted to be ravished desperat-." I wave my hand cutting her off.
I think I might die of embarrassment.
"You don't have to worry about that now. Play with dolls or whatever you kids fancy. Leave that to the adults. Now leave." She nods, and obediently leaves.
I look to Gene, giving her a stank face.
"You're having the time of your life eh?"
"Only been a day, and she has already added light to an area I honestly didn't know was dark." She replies, and I smile looking at the child as she she was about to walk out the door.
I guess Gene speaks truth. It's true you never know what you may be missing until said thing shows up. Accustom to it just being us, we lived comfortably, had a stable flow of things, but the short time she has been here I can say the place has felt a bit more livelier. A youthfulness added to the atmosphere.
But with a mouth and bluntness like hers, I swear the child will give me a heart attack.
She stops suddenly, turning around once more.
"Annabella." I warn but she asks anyway.
"Do you know how babies are made?" My entire countenance drops in utmost disbelief. Gene throws her head back laughing.
"Gene!"
"I'm sorry I can't help it. She's so genuine with her questions."
Indeed she was. Her face said it all, she's just really curious, of everything. Sighing, I say,
"I will tell you this, and only this; it happens when two adults join together." Her face screws up in confusion.
"But-"
"That's all your young mind needs to know for now. When you're much, much, much, much older, I'll explain it more to you." A bright smile takes over her face, and she nods, before turning to leave again.
"Where are you going?"
"To play with dolls or whatever us kids fancy." She repeats my words, running out the room, forgetting to close the door.
"I think she's here to torture me." I say, holding my face in my hands. Gene chuckles.
"Or maybe I'm here to love you big sis." I look towards the door, surprised to find her still there. Her words tugged straight at the strings of my heart, and that smile always seemed to make one of my own to arise. She grabs the handle of the door, before shutting it close.
Or maybe I'm here to love you big sis. Her words replayed in my head.
I've seen many times what love between families were like here in the capital. The closeness they had, the smiles I would see on their faces. I envied them. I've never had the genuine love of a family, and now a child who I knew was not related to me by blood, speaks of loving someone her own mother called a sinner, and who I knew told her to shun me.
Looking to Gene, she smiles as well.
"It's only been a day." I note and she chuckles.
"A lot can happen in twenty four hours."Someone knocks again, the same time the phone rings.
"I got the phone." Gene says, getting up going to it.
"Come in!" I say and Adionis enters, his eyes instantly going to Gene. He clearly adores the woman, and her poem makes so much more sense.
Maybe I could ask him to write one as well.
"Phillia Residence." I hear Gene say. Looking to her, her eyes as well locked to the hunk of man.
She raises the phone to me.
"It's the priest." I narrow my eyes in confusion.
"Why is Kevin calling?" I mutter, walking over and taking the phone.
"Go talk to your man." I tell her and she rolls her eyes, walking over to him anyway.
"Hello." I answer.
"Good day Agatha."
"What seems to be the reason for your call?"I say going straight to the point.
"I'm calling to ask how was the first night was. Just making sure that everything is going well."
"Well it's only been a day. My mother is herself and the child has a lot of questions." He chuckles.
"She always asked a lot at church. She has a lot that she is curious about."
"I doubt I'm the right person for that." I honestly tell him, watching as Gene and Adionis whispered amongst themselves. His eyes looking down at her with so much adoration.
"You're not a bad person Agatha."
"None of us are." I say and he hums in agreement.
"She's a kind soul. A rare sight to behold coming from our village of darkness."
"And you bring her here to me? I'm sure my mother fears I may contaminate the poor child. Lead her to hell with my sinful ways." I chuckle humorously, but he didn't laugh, making me want to laugh more.
"Again, you're not a bad person Agatha. I'll call in from time to time, to make sure they are okay."
"I'm not going to kill her Kevin."
"I never said you were going to. Have a great day, Lady Agatha."
"Priest." I reply, resting the phone down, hanging it up.
"What did he want?" Gene asks, turning to me.
"He simply wanted to check in. Make sure nothing too drastic has happened." They both chuckle.
"So when shall the wedding be?" I raise a brow at them; Gene's mouth dropping in shock, while Adionis smirks, wrapping his right arm around her waist, pulling her body flush against his.
The way her cheeks became red was just adorable honestly. I go to say something but she narrows her eyes at me, her right eye beginning to twitch.
"Lasagna anybody." I say causing Adionis to chuckle.
