Keeping up A-fear-ances

During the night, I had this vision. I thought I'd never have to deal with Eda's flashbacks again, but this one wasn't about Lilith cursing her. It was of Eda around my age. The flashback sounded like she was talking to someone. "It always starts the same way. I wake up someplace dark. And then it appears." Young Eda said. "And eventually, I wake up and I know I turned into that thing." "I see. Here, take this." The healer said, handing Eda the gem she's worn since forever. "It will tell you when the beast's energy is bubbling to the surface. Also, I hear gems are quite fashionable for young witches. "Oh, what a beautiful little stone." The woman next to him commented, who I could only assume that was her mom. My grandmother. "May I speak with you outside? Just a minute, hon." After my grandmother went to talk with the healer, I walked over to Eda, until I tripped over something. "Oh, shit!" I cursed. Then, I noticed Eda walking to the door and trying to listen to her mother argue with the Healing Coven witch. "That's right. This is another Eda flashback, so no one can see or hear me." I recalled. I walked up to her and spoke. "Don't worry, Mom. I know you can't hear me, but I promise. I will find a way to heal your curse." Eda walked to her bedroom door and listened to her mom arguing. Eda quickly escaped her room through her window.

I followed Young Eda into the woods, but she looked around, confused with her surroundings. "I never knew this was back here." She said to herself, accidentally tripping on something buried in the ground. She took it out of the ground. I immediately recognized what she found. The portal door to the human realm. I watched her escape from her mom as I woke up.

"Beans!" I hear Eda say, waking up me and Luz. "We ran out of apple blood. Still no luck?" "None. And we stayed up all night." I yawned. "We read every tome, book, notepad, and tea leaf." Luz added. "But nothing explains how to make a portal to the human realm." "I wish I could help you, kiddos. My door was already pretty old when I found it." Eda explains. "How long did you have it?" Luz asked. "Well..." Eda started, until Lilith screamed at the top of her lungs. "Lilith!" I gasped as we all ran to the living room to see her struggling with the curse. "Help me!" Lilith cried. "Calm down, just calm down." Eda said, giving an elixir to her older sister as her feathers faded away. "The curse acts stronger when you're stressed." "That was horrible." Lilith sighed. "How have you managed all these years?" "Well, it's been hard, but ever since we split the curse, at least the elixirs are working again." Eda replied. "Oh, that's a relief." Lilith sighed, but freaked out about her missing hand. "Oh, yeah, sorry. Side effect of the curse." Eda added, attaching the hand to Lilith. "It's actually fun once in a while. Now don't worry, I've stashed elixirs all over the house. Whenever you start feeling feathery, just help yourself to one of these bad boys." "I had no idea this is what I did to you." Lilith said. "I am so, so sorry." "Eh, at least I got company now." Eda replied. "And you got me if you need anything."

Eda took Luz and I outside to let Lilith get some rest. "As I was saying, I've had the portal door for years. But I originally just found it in the dirt." Eda explains. "Never figured out who made it or where it came from. I just kept it to myself." "Why wouldn't you tell anyone?" Luz asked. "Why? Suddenly curious about my past?" Eda chuckled. "Always. Always curious." Luz replied. "Well, I may have been using it to hide from someone." Eda confessed. "Hide from who?" I asked. "Probably me." An older woman replied, making a dramatic entrance. "Magic bird tornado?" Luz wondered. As the tornado settled down, it was revealed to be Eda's mother. "Hello, little witchlet. Come here." She greeted. "Gwendolyn." Eda grumbled. "Oof. Are we still on that?" Gwendolyn asked. "I'm your mother. Call me "Mom."" "Mom?!" Luz and Lilith gasped. "It is so good to see you again." Gwendolyn said. "How are you feeling? Are you eating well? I heard all about the Petrification Ceremony. Trust me, I have a lot of strong words for that Belos." "Mother! Mother, you know, I was there too." Lilith added. "Oh, hello to you too, sweet flea." Gwendolyn greeted. "Still dyeing your hair, I see. Well, it's very sleek. Now give me a moment with Edalyn, dear. It's important. That's right. Today, I'm about to complete a 30 year old mission." "Oh, no." Eda groaned. "Your mother has finally succeeded." Gwendolyn said. "Here it comes." Eda sighed. "Today, I shall be curing your curse." Gwendolyn announced. "No thanks." Eda declined. "What?!" The rest of us gasped. "I've got my elixir system. I'm good." Eda said. "But who knows what they put in those nasty concoctions?" Gwendolyn asked. "Actually, I do. And, would you look at the time? I got a lot to do today. So sad to see you go. Okay, byeeee!" Eda lied, sending her mother off. "Moms? Am I right?" "I haven't seen Mother in forever!" Lilith snapped. "And she was handing you a cure on a silver platter." "I was told that you and Dad were dead for the past few years!" I exclaimed. "And until recently, I fucking believed it!" "I'd kill to see my mom right now, and you just launch yours into the sky?" Luz asked. "Oh, listen, she comes around every year, toting a new cure for my curse, but they never work." Eda replied. "So I am done getting my hopes up." "Mother visits Edalyn regularly?" Lilith wondered, following her sister inside. Luz noticed Gwendolyn landing in the woods not long after. "Mrs Clawthorne, wait!" Luz shouted. "I'm Luz, one of Eda's apprentices." "I'm Peter, the second apprentice." I added. "We think what you're doing is so sweet. Eda can just be so... Eda sometimes." "Call me Gwen, children. But please don't blame Edalyn." Gwendolyn said. "It was the curse that created the rift between us." "I understand. Right now, there's an actual rift between me and my mom in the Human Realm." Luz explains. "My dear, I may know how to fix both our rifts." Gwendolyn said. "I've heard some information that may assist you on your quest. Help me cure Eda's curse and that information is yours." "Yes! Where do we start?" Luz asked. "We'll be consulting someone very special." Gwendolyn replied.

Luz and I walked with Gwendolyn in the woods to meet this person. "So, we're gonna meet a curse expert?" I asked. "This is so rad!" "Yes, after years of dealing with the Healing Coven, I finally found someone who promised me a cure." Gwendolyn replied. "Ah, here we are." She pulled out a medallion that was able to open the cave. On the inside, we witnessed a creature being cured of itchy eyes. "That's Master Wortlop. He's a traveling curse expert who's perfected next-level healing magic." "Gwendolyn, my pupil. Your aura is shining bright." Wortlop said. "It took many months, but I was able to gather the sacred items you requested." Gwendolyn explains. "The copper egg from the Snowy Rib Cage, the silver dagger from the Swampy Toes, and the golden chalice from the desert of Palm Stings." "You're a dedicated mother, aren't you?" Wortlop asked, summoning a tome. "Inside this tome is the healing ability you seek. But keep it away from the eyes of nonbelievers, for many will be blinded by the power it holds." "I understand. I'm in your debt, Master Wortlop." Gwendolyn said.

Back at the Owl House, we came up with a plan to get Eda healed. If we're successful, we can even cure my Cool Aunt Lilith. That actually has a nice ring to it. Now it was time to be the live bait. "Eda! Madre! Mamà!" I greeted. "What do you want, kid?" Eda asked. "Oh, I was taking a walk with Luz earlier and we found these signs. I think they're promoting apple blood." I lied. "How about I take you there?" "The mother in me is saying, "What are you up to?" But the bad girl in me is saying, "Take me to the Apple Blood!"" Eda exclaimed. "Oh, baby, time to stock up on Mama's night juice." All of a sudden, some crystals were falling from the trees where Luz was hiding with Gwendolyn. "Holy shit!" I cursed. "Knife season came early this year." Eda said as she was almost crushed by a giant crystal. Stressed out by the crystal, some of her feathers came back.

After a while, Eda was getting pretty stressed about all the obstacles. "Peter. This better be the oldest, strongest, stinkiest apple blood ever!" Eda grunted. "Hopefully we're almost there." I panted. "Ugh, I just stole these." Eda groaned as her new boots were ruined. Next thing I know, she was being launched in the air. "How the hell is this curing her curse?" I asked myself. "That Wortlop bastard is a scammer! I gotta do something."

I ran into the woods to find Eda again. When I reached her, she was covered in fur, feathers, and flying snakes were stuck in her hair. "Ugh, well, this ain't good." Eda said. "Mom! Are you alright?" I asked. "I've been through worse." Eda replied, pulling the snake from her hair. Shortly after, Luz and Gwendolyn fell from the tree with a sack of elixirs. "Hey! What is going on here?" "Witchlet, it's okay." Gwendolyn said. "Luz, Peter, and I are working to heal you." "What? This was all you?!" Eda asked. "You weren't healing me. You nearly killed me!" "Eda, please try to stay calm." Luz warned. "Why? Why should I be calm? I have a right to be upset!" Eda shouted as she was becoming the Owl Beast. "Don't worry." Gwendolyn said. "According to this, we just have to..." "Have to what?" Luz asked. "Buy the next volume." Gwendolyn replied. Suddenly, King jumped out from the bushes. "King?" I asked. "So Lilith was feeling stressed and, uh, the light glyph didn't really work. So, uh." King explains. That's when it happened. Lilith flew above us in her beast form. "She turned into that thing!" "Sweet flea?" Gwendolyn asked. Lilith takes off with Eda. "Mom! Aunt Lilith!" I cried. "That was my little sweet flea. That means she's also... Wait? Edalyn is your mother?!" Gwendolyn gasped. "Elias? My grandson?!" "Yes. And Lilith is cursed!" I groaned. "Were you really not paying attention to her?" King asked, getting on Owlbert to help the sisters. "We have to help them. Will you come with us?" Luz asked. "This must be part of the process, right?" Gwendolyn hesitated. "We can see you still need a little time." I said. "Alright, Owlbert. Let's fly!" The palisman takes to the skies to save Eda and Lilith.

The town was being destroyed as the sisters brawled. "Gotta think fast." Luz panicked. "Look, down there." I pointed to Morton's stand as we landed in front. "Morton, we need every last elixir you have." "Also, do you accept payment in hyperrealistic pencil portraits?" Luz asked, showing Morton a caricature of himself. Morton closed the doors of his shop. "Shoot! I thought I was improving." "Don't worry." Gwendolyn said. "Mama's here."

Luz and I followed Gwendolyn up to the roof of a building while Eda was still fighting Lilith. "Holy shit." I said. "You sure this is gonna work?" Luz asked. "Yeah, are you like secretly sending us to our deaths?" King added. "No, I'm making things right." Gwendolyn replied, destroying her medallion. Luz, King, and I took off on Owlbert as Gwendolyn tried to confront her daughters. "My beautiful daughters, I failed you. Edalyn? You're in there, aren't you? I should've listened to you. I know now why you pushed me away. I made you think your curse was something to be ashamed of. Whether we want it or not, it's a part of you. And I love every part of you. I'm so sorry." "Mom?" Eda asked. "Witchlet." Gwendolyn smiled as Lilith growled. Eda was able to keep her down. "And Lilith, you were always so self-sufficient. But I didn't give you the attention you deserved. Now!" King jumps down to Gwendolyn and I helped Luz with the elixirs. "Man, that is good elixir." Luz said as the sisters were changed back to normal. "About time, Mom." Eda smiled as Lilith was still crying. "Mom, I heard you, but I couldn't stop myself." Lilith sobbed. "I couldn't do anything." "It's okay. Everything is okay now." Gwendolyn said. "I'm here for you both." "She was trying to do her best, huh?" King asked. "Yeah, buddy." I replied.

As we got back, Gwendolyn was about to depart for home. "I'm sorry for all the trouble I caused, but I just wanted to help." Gwendolyn apologized. "I should've trusted you more." "Yeah, you should've." Eda said. "But, hey, don't be a stranger. Okay, Mom?" "Mom! I'm ready." Lilith announced, carrying some of her belongings. "Huh?" Eda wondered. "Well, we were talking, and I've decided to go home with Mother and make up for lost time." "What?" Luz asked. "The fuck?" I wondered. "Lily?" Eda questioned. "You lived here?" King added. "What?!" Hooty cried. "Edalyn, Lilith told me how she gave you the curse. I am so, so, sorry to you both to have this secret weighing you down." Gwendolyn replied. "I wish I knew sooner." "There's still a lot to be learned about this curse." Lilith added. "But, it'll be nice to spend some time home and reconnect with Dad." "We'll be away for a while, but we have plenty of elixir stocked up." Gwendolyn explains. "No, Lulu! You can't!" Hooty whined. "Hootsifer, I have to." Lilith said. "But don't worry, we can be pen pals." "But I can't hold a pen!" Hooty sobbed. "Luz, if it weren't for you, I might still be wrapped up in Wortlop's lies. So here's what I should've told you from the start." Gwendolyn explains. "You and Peter aren't the only humans to have lived in Bonesborough. There's a rare substance called Titan's blood. It is extremely powerful and sometimes causes leaks between our realms. Plants, animals, and you guys have a lot of garbage by the way. But humans are rare. My great grandmother told me about a human who once lived here, but one day, he just vanished. Rumor has it he left something in the library, and if you could find out more about him..." "Maybe we can find out how he got here." I interrupted as Lilith and Gwendolyn flew their way home. "Well, I'll be on the couch for the next 24 hours." Eda yawned. "Goodnight." "No, wait! I call couch." "I'll be home soon, Mom." Luz whispered. "Camp's probably ended by now. She must be so worried."
