04 | THE LIES OF SURVIVAL
NAYARA WAS NEVER a liar. She was an honest person, and now she was fearing how quickly she lied to the people around her. It was plain survival really. She had to think her words carefully, and sometimes blend truth. Specially now that she was stuck in an Avenger's tower, and it was Spiderman's fault.
Peter Parker just wanted to help her. He saw how disoriented she was, so he took the time to try and find his missing mysterious girl who might have seen a little loony at first. Nayara would have agreed with him if she ever knew what he thought.
Now she sat in the middle of the living room. "Why did you took me here?" Nayara asked him, looking at him with an exasperated look.
Peter looked down at her. "I thought it will help."
"How? I'm stuck here in the Avenger's tower because of you. I'm not running away because you will shoot another web and trap me again." Nayara said, standing up. "This is kinapping. I didn't want to come here in the first place."
"You were lost and I'm just trying to help." Peter told her.
"Who is?" A voice said from behind the two teens. Nayara looked over her shoulder, her breath taken the way by the sight of the two person coming.
"A friend." Peter answered the question.
Nayara rolled her eyes, looking at Peter. "We aren't friends, web-slinger." She corrected him. She turned around to look at the woman who entered with the a man. Nayara tried to calm her breathing when she saw the two of them. It was her role model and the hero she loved to the moon and back: Carol Danvers and Steve Rogers.
"She is completely lost. I don't think she is from here." Peter blurted out to Carol Danvers who had taken off her helmet. Her spiked hair, made Nayara more excited.
Nayara gulped when the two blonde heroes stood in front of them. "I-I..." She started, but was unable to form any words.
"What? Cat got your tongue?" Peter joked. Nayara held back her urge to punch him.
"I should say the same thing to you. You loose your mind when Black Cat arrives." Nayara whispered to him. Peter turned to look at her and pointed at her. "I read the news." Nayara told him. Nayara turned to face the two heroes. "There has been a misunderstanding. You see, Spider-Man kinapped me without a reason too. I was waiting for my mom outside the store, and then he just showed up."
Steve looked at Peter disapprovingly, while Carol was half amused by the situation. "Peter, I-" Steve started.
"I...I-It's okay, sir. I bet he just confused me with someone else." Nayara cut him, dressing Captain America himself, while she tried to calm her own nerves.
"That's a lie because she isn't from here. She knows my name. I didn't know what to do." Peter exclaimed. The eyes moved from Peter to Nayara, who had to take a seat. Nayara sighed. "She said that everyone knew I was under a mask, I didn't know what to do so I bought her here." Peter told them.
Nayara looked at Steve Rogers and then at Carol Danvers. "That part is true." Nayara mumbled, looking down at the floor.
"What do you mean by everyone?" Steve asked her.
Nayara looked up to him and quickly looked down, trying to figure out a way of solving this problem she was stuck in. She knew if she lied to Steve, she will feel bad and possibly get herself into a more trouble.
She decided not to lie and just tell a part of the truth.
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you two." Nayara told the two heroes. "And I will prefer if bug-boy wasn't here." Nayara told the two. "I swear I don't come here to harm anybody. As Peter said, I'm lost and I'm trying to find a way back home." Nayara informed them.
Steve pulled Carol away from the two teens. "What has the boy gotten himself with?" Carol asked him.
"The girls seems normal to me, but why does she only one to talk to the two of us?" Steve asked her.
"Think about it, Captain." Carol joked.
"You got an answer, Captain." Steve joked back at his friend. Steve looked back at the kid, who seemed uneasy on the Avenger's tower. "I mean, what harm can a kid do, Carol?" Steve asked her.
"You will be surprised." Carol cut in. "Peter wanted answers, and he isn't going to get it from her now that she is annoyed at him. Maybe we should get it ourselves." Carol told him. The blonde walked the the arachnid boy, motioning him to leave.
"But-" He started, and was cut off by Steve's voice.
"Listen to the lady." Steve told him. Peter sighed, running towards the balcony and jumping off it. Steve noticed how the girl didn't look up to meet neither of them. She played with her hands while thinking of her words carefully. She could either doomed herself even more, or even change the course of the comics.
"Who are you?" Carol asked her.
Nayara looked up to her. She is prettier in person, she thought admiring the beauty of her hero. "Nayara Lilly." Nayara told her. "I know who you two are. You the two best Avenger's in the entire Avenger's history." Nayara commented her, her voice jumping slightly at some parts due to her nerves.
Steve gave her a comforting smile. "Where you from?" He asked her.
"With all honesty? Not from here. At all." Nayara told him. The man shared a brief look with Carol.
"You are alien?" Steve asked her slowly.
The young girl shook her head. "Not entirely. I....I can't remember what happened to my parents or where I landed in. I am from here but not exactly."
"Asgard?" Steve asked her.
The girl shook her head again, smiling at him. "No. I'm not. I'm..." She hesitated, trying to find out the words. Then she had an idea, which thought would work. "I don't know. I can't remember." She told the two of them, looking at the floor.
It pained her to lie to them.
It burned her inside out.
"You don't remember where you are from?" Carol asked her. Nayara shook her head. "Parents? Anything?" She asked her again, kneeling down in front of the girl.
"Nothing. Where I come from." Nayara started, looking at the two heroes with pure admiration. "You are legends, mere whispers. When I talked to...Spiderman I remember the legend and I thought I was at home. I was disoriented. I didn't know where I was at first. Then...I saw him and I thought that...it was just a man trying to act like him and I told him I was going to call the cops because I didn't want the man to get hurt. When he jumped into the building to talk to me, I saw the webs. I knew it would have been impossible for a normal person to do that. I thought I was crazy. All the legends were slightly coming back, but my parents or from where I am are completely gone." Nayara told them. The two heroes could see the pain that the girl held, but it wasn't because of fear it was because it pained her to lie to them. To blend the truth.
Nayara looked at Carol. "Captain Marvel, the intergalactic hero. There were legends about you, but not as popular as Captain America's or other Avengers." Nayara then turned to Steve Rogers. "I didn't meant to cause any harm whatsoever. Spiderman just caught me without thinking. I was panicking. I didn't know where I was." Nayara confessed to the two of them. "That was until I saw the Avenger's tower, the symbol. Everything clicked and I...I panicked. I ran away and been trying to survive on my own." Nayara told the two of them.
Steve shared a look with Carol, which Nayara could not comprehend. Carol turned to look at her with a small smile. "If only you knew how much this is normal compared to what we have fought." Steve told the girl.
I know, Nayara thought in response. Nayara returned the smile to Steve. "The friend I left behind. I am staying with her." Nayara told Carol. "She will get worried if I don't go back. I promise to be a good citizen, if you two need any help ask spiderman. Apparently he knows how to find me." Nayara told them.
"Can I go now?" Nayara asked them.
"Of course." Steve answered her. Carol sended him a look. "We can't keep a kid here. She clearly doesn't know where she is. The least we can do is help her." Steve whispered to Carol, who quickly stood up.
Carol took out her phone, dialing the other teen's phone number. "Pete, will you be kind enough to drop the girl off where you left her." Carol told him through the phone.
"I'm busy fighting a man with a rhino costume." Peter told the woman, avoiding a punch from the villain.
"What did he say?" Steve asked Carol.
"He is fighting a Rhino." Carol told him.
"What?" Steve asked confused.
"He is a villain." Nayara said from her seat. "It is just a man who dressed up in a costume of a rhino to fight Spiderman. There are worst villain out there. He is just annoying." Nayara told the two of them.
Steve looked at her. "You know who he is?" He asked her.
"I have seen the news that is all." She lied. She knew who he was, but she could not tell them that. "I read an article from the Daily Bludge about it. They adore Spiderman." She explained. "I can walk to the train station and make my own way. He seems busy. You should tell him to use his web to make him flip. He is too heavy to be lifted so if has Rhino running, he should and jump over it. Then shoot the webs to get a hold of his head and pull. Spider-Man is strong enough to do it, even if he doesn't seem like it. He is pretty much playing with momentum. It's just physics." Nayara explained to the two of them, leaving them shock with the explanation. It was something Nayara already knew, due watching and reading too many Spiderman comics.
"And I thought you were the strategist." Carol told Steve before walking to the girl. The brunette looked up. "Explain it to him." She handing the phone to her.
Nayara shook her head. "You are the hero." She told her.
"But you got the idea." Steve corrected her.
Nayara took the phone, and put it on her ear. "Bug-boy?" She asked through the phone.
"Who is this?" Peter asked, jumping out of Rhino's way.
"Use your momentum agaisnt Rhino. That's how you beat him." Nayara informed him.
Peter did a grin, shooting his spiderwebs at the man. "What?" Peter asked her.
"When he is charging towards you, wait till he is close enough. Jump over him, do a flip if you want to and then shoot your webs at him and pull him towards you. Crash him into something if you need to. Stay out of his way, you will get hurt if not." She told him clearly though the phone.
"How do you know all this?" He asked her, getting in position to deal with the villain just like the girl had told him.
"Don't ask question and do it. Don't you understand physics." She told him, frowning at the questions.
"I do." Peter said. "Got to go." He said before hanging up the phone. "Let's see if it works." Peter said to himself, and it did.
