25// Here Comes the Calvary

It's day three of being queen, and it's nothing like the fairy tales.

First off, you don't even seem to have a kingdom. Will claims he's "ruling over the town," but little has changed besides the cancellation of psychic shows at the Tent of Telepathy. The only people whose lives are affected by Will are you, the Gleeful twins, and the poor cashiers at the store when Will steals snack food from their stocks. Some kingdom.

At least most everyone is safe.

The Gleeful twins, though, are the opposite of safe. Will alternates between torturing them, using them for petty errands (like stealing more Chipackers for him), and grilling them for information. Turns out he isn't satisfied with getting revenge on his captors, like you thought — he wants to get more powerful.

"Why?" you demand when he tells you this. "What are you going to do with more powers?"

He shrugs. "Rule the world. Pretty standard on demon to-do lists."

Mabel and Dipper aren't much help on this; the only form of power they're familiar with is the amulets — which Will can't use, though no one is sure why. You try to steal the amulets for yourself, but a copy of Will is always guarding them, and with his super senses, there's no sneaking up on him. Same with the dimension hopper.

The Gleeful twins have something more than the amulet, though — three books, pale blue with six-fingered hands on the cover. Will spends hours poring over them, discovering whatever he can about the strangeness of the town. Sometimes, as one copy of him reads, another will go out in the forest, searching for artifacts. Whenever he invites you along, you take it, desperate to get out of the Tent of Telepathy.

You're out on one of these adventures when they come for you.

You and Will are walking through a field — of wildflowers, you note with a pang — when he stops. "Oh. He built another one."

You frown. "What?"

Will looks at you with an amused expression on his face. "Dipper Pines built another dimension hopper. He's here to rescue you."

Hopes flutter in your chest, but they're muted — you're all the way out here, and you have no idea where Dipper is. Who knows where Will has clones of himself?

"Then let him rescue me," you say. "We — we can leave you alone. Just let me go."

"And you'll go back on that promise you made to Pacifica?"

You frown at him, not remembering at first. Then your it comes back to you: your promise to stop Will. You can't go back on it, you realize. Will's too dangerous.

Instead of answering, you turn around, heading back the way you came. A copy of Will appears in front of you. "Where are you going?"

"Back to the Tent," you say, skirting around him. You know he can stop you if he wants, but you're hoping he doesn't.

He falls into step next to you. "What are you going to do there?"

"Talk to Dipper. Try to negotiate with you."

He snickers. "Good luck."

But he doesn't stop you.

Halfway there, Will speaks up. "Huh," he says. "That's going to be a problem."

"What?" you ask. He doesn't stop, so you don't either. You're desperate to get to Dipper.

"He has a new device," Will replies. "One that can get rid of my copies. It's making it pretty hard to take away his dimension hopper."

Your fluttering hopes start to soar. Will catches the small, involuntary smile on your face; he purses his lips. But he still doesn't stop you.

"I might let you go," he says. "You're no fun anymore, anyway. I'll rule my kingdom in peace, and you can stay put in your nice little dimension with no demons to deal with."

You're quiet for a minute. Finally, you ask the question that's been simmering under your tongue for the past three days. "Will, are you happy now?"

He glances sideways at you. "What do you mean?"

"You don't seem satisfied. You torture the twins, you keep me under your thumb, you're constantly seeking for more power even though you already have plenty. Where does it end?"

"Well, as you've probably noticed, the world doesn't recognize me as their king yet."

"So once they do, you'll be happy?" you ask.

"I'll have done what Bill never could."

"And that'll make you happy?" you persist. You don't dare stop walking, but you turn to him as best you can. "You hated Bill, I know you did. You told me yourself. You told me he wasn't a representation of demonkind — why are you trying to emulate him?"

Will looks away.

"You'll never be content acting like Bill," you say. "I. . . still believe there's a part of you that cares. That wants to come back out." Even as you say it, you're not sure if you're telling the truth. But you desperately want it to be true, so you say it nonetheless.

The look Will gives you is unamused, and your tenuous belief in his good side withers further.

"Yasmin!"

You've reached the end of the forest, near the Tent of Telepathy. And there's Dipper! He runs to you, looking relieved. "You're okay?"

"I'm okay," you say. "Let's go."

Dipper gestures you over, and you step away from Will. Will doesn't stop you, and you take that as a good sign. Hopefully he'll let you go.

What then, though? Do you just forget about your promise to Pacifica Southeast?

Dipper doesn't use the dimension hopper right away. You notice a second one sticking out of his pocket; you realize he took the first one back from Will. Phew — Will with access to other dimensions like that is a bad idea.

"I have a proposition, Will," Dipper says. "Are you in a place to hear it?"

Will folds his arms. "If I'm not, will you shoot me?" He glances at a gun that Dipper's holding in the other hand.

"This only works on your copies," Dipper says. "If you're the only version of yourself, then it won't hurt you."

Will looks unimpressed, but he gives a little nod. "What's your proposition?"

"Come back with us," Dipper says. You look at him in alarm, but he keeps talking. "I have a way to. . . contain your powers." Will's eyes flare in hostility, but Dipper holds out his hand, keeping the gun pointed down. "With your permission, we can contain your powers and, with them, your demonic tendencies. You can live a fulfilling life."

Will raises a skeptical eyebrow. "A fulfilling human life?"

Dipper shrugs. "That's the only kind that really fits in dimensions like these."

"And what if I take back my dimension hopper and go out in search of another dimension?"

"Then you'll be lonely," you say quietly.

Both Dipper and Will look at you with mild surprise, as if they forgot you were there. "I-I mean," you continue, "you can go find other demons, I guess, but if any of them are like Bill, then I don't think that's the best idea." You step away from Dipper and cautiously touch Will's arm. "The happiest I've ever seen you, Will, was when you first got a physical form. When you were so excited to experience the world. Can you. . . can you find that again? Our dimension has plenty of great places, great things to do." You smile a bit. "Great food to eat. You can come back with us and. . . and have those experiences."

Will stares at you. You're not sure what he's thinking.

"You can care about people again," you finish.

He's quiet for some moments more. "So," he finally says, glancing at Dipper. "You'll take away my powers — who I am as a demon — and then you'll trust me?"

"Do you like living as a demon?" you try. "You seemed a lot happier when you didn't have these powers, Will. Even when you were a captive, you had more. . . more life than this."

Will thinks for a long time, long enough that you get impatient. But you don't dare say anything or make any sound. He looks deep in thought; you don't want to interrupt that.

"Will I be a prisoner?" he asks Dipper. "If I want my powers back, if I want to go out in search of others like me, will you let me go?"

Dipper hesitates, and Will's eyes cloud over. You bite your lip, looking at Dipper with pleading eyes. Once Will goes through with this, you don't think he'll want to go back. You hope he won't.

"You won't be a prisoner," Dipper says. "You'll have to ask me to use my dimension hoppers, but I won't. . . I won't reject you like I did before. I'm sorry for that." He looks at Will hopefully. "You're welcome to stay at the Mystery Shack, too. There's an extra room in the attic."

Will still looks suspicious, but you plead to him with your expression. Please, Will, let's just be friends again.

"Fine," he finally says. "I have one more thing to do, though. What did you do with the amulets after destroying their guard?"

Dipper looks embarrassed. He hands you the dimension hopper, then pulls the amulets out of a pocket.

"Let me destroy them," Will says. "They don't belong in your dimension, anyway."

Dipper hesitates again, but finally nods.

Will closes his eyes. You're confused for a minute, and then you realize he's concentrating. Like that first day in the forest. It was only a few days ago, but it feels like forever. Sweat soon appears on Will's forehead, and his breathing deepens.

Finally, a bright pink bubble appears.

You jump, staring at its incandescent coloring. Dread and panic war within you. What. . . what does Will want with another weirdness bubble?

"Throw them in," Will instructs Dipper.

Understanding dawns in Dipper's eyes, and he chucks the amulets towards the bubble. A split second after they disappear into its florescent folds, the bubble disappears.

"There," Will says. "No more terror twins."

Dipper frowns. "Yes. . . I found those kids downstairs. What have you been doing to them?"

"I'm not apologizing," Will says immediately. "Although. . . now that I think about it, we should probably destroy those journals, too."

The embarrassed look returns to Dipper's face. He opens his trenchcoat to reveal three pale blue books.

Will rolls his eyes. "Well, I'm not pulling up another weirdness bubble. I guess you can keep them."

In that moment, you see a little bit of the old Will. Your heart beats in earnest as you smile at him.

He gives a little smile back and takes your hand. You flinch a little — his touching you hasn't been friendly for the past few days — but then you realize it's to get pulled along by the dimension hopper. "Let's go," he says. "Your method of containing my powers had better not hurt, Dipper."

"I wouldn't know," Dipper says cheerfully. He types in the name of your home dimension and presses the button.

You're headed home.
