~Chapter two~
It was 9:30 PM when the spell was cast. Most of the city was asleep. That is, except for Tread and one of his close friends, Harl Hubbs, the handyman of the city. Currently, he was helping build a racetrack for Tread to test the powers of the pendant he bought earlier that day. "Heh, this will be great! I'll be even faster and better than I already am!" He exclaimed as he got into his car. "Okay, if you say so."
However, before he could start the car, he noticed something as he looked at his hands. They were turning into hooves! "What the!?" The racer exclaimed as he fell out of his car. "Tread are you okay?" Harl asked as he rushed over.
"M-My hands! They're not normal-" Tread stated before letting out a scream of pain. His bones were shifting and forming. "Oh no, uh, what do I d-" Harl was about to try and help, but he also started to have his bones shift. The pain was excruciating for both of them, though harl didn't scream since he didn't want to wake anybody else up.
Their faces became longer and more horselike. But that's not all. Both men had extra features along with the horse-like ones.
"Ack! How many legs can a horse get?!" The himbo screamed, he was struggling to stand with four extra legs growing out of him. "Uuuugh... What did I do to turn into a horse? I don't even support hose racing! They're way slower than cars, and they can get hurt too."
Harl meanwhile was having trouble of his own, two large dove wings burst from his back, flapping aimlessly as he panicked. His fur and mane were a milky white while Tread's was jet black, matching the pendants they both wore. "I think I'm a Pegasus. But how did this happen? The elementary school's principal might dress like a wizard, but he never could do real magic."
Tread would have responded, but he was too busy mourning for his torn up racing jacket. He had it since the start of his racing career, even though he had plenty of spares in his closet. "I value every jacket I have okay?!" He yelled at no one in particular. "Now I'm some kind of spider horse, I can't even make webs!"
"Spider horse? Wait, Tread. I think you turned into Sleipnir, Odin's eight legged horse. You know the mythology?"
"Uuuh, no? I only bought this pendant because the owner said it makes me fast! And even if it doesn't work it would make a cool good luck charm." Tread admitted. Then he had a thought, could he still be the fastest as a mythical horse? "Gimme some space, time for a test run!"
With that, started running, causing clouds of dust to come from under his hooves. He only stumbled a bit at first, since he was getting used to his horse body and extra limbs, but once he got the hang of it, he ran fast around the built track. He only stopped when he crossed the finish line.
"Whoo! I'm super fast! How was my time?" He asked the handyman beside him. "Well I can't really hold a stop watch with my hooves, but you were at the finish line after I blinked twice." Harl responded. "Radical! I'm so fast! I bet I'm even faster than a car now!" Tread exclaimed, happy about the newfound speed he has as a horse.
As Tread was bragging about how fast he was now, Harl tried to use his new wings. "I'm not sure if I'd be able to fly though. Why if my horse body is too heavy for my wings?" Harl asked.
"Nah, Harl, you have to have the confidence to fly! If you believe you can achieve!" Tread stated. "Well yeah but-"
"Just believe." Tread repeated. Harl paused and took a deep breath. "You're right, I have to at least try!" Harl stated, flapping his wings repeatedly.
The handyman turned Pegasus looked on in awe as his hooves lifted up off the ground, he really was flying. "Wow! This is so amazing! Now I can help people get from place to place with ease! Of course there is still the issue of trying to become human again."
"Well since we changed under a full moon it's probably like a werewolf thing. Like as soon as morning comes we'll be our old selves again, right?" Tread hypothesized. "I mean it's not like anyone will notice the sudden hoof marks appearing every night or the fact that I'm now so much faster than before. Right?"
Harl thought long and hard about what might be the cause of this sudden change, watching as his pendant rocked on his neck. "Maybe Cassian might know what happened, he's an expert on magic and myths after all. We'll just pop by his shop tomorrow and he can help us out! That is, hopefully if we can change back before anyone notices..."
"Aw what are you worried about? We're just horses. I mean like legendary horse things but still. The worst that happens is we get sent all the way to Mr Produce's farm."
Harl didn't know how to explain it, but he was hoping a certain someone wouldn't be freaked out by seeing him like this. A certain doorman that is. "I guess you're right, no use worrying over something that hasn't happened yet. Boy, I'm tired. Let's try to get some sleep."
"Yeah, I mean it's not like anyone else ended up changing too in the middle of the night."
"Yeah if so we would have heard the screams of agonizing pain." Harl said, just finding a spot in the junkyard and trying to lie down. And, to not their surprise, neither of them knew how to lay down as a horse. "I mean if I am right and we turn back to normal then maybe..." Tread started before knocking himself over on purpose. "There! I'm on the ground, g'night." He said before falling asleep.
Harl, not wanting anything to happen if they do turn back to normal, decided to gently sleep standing up.
However, after a long sleepless night of not actually sleeping, the two horsemen were awoken by screams. However, not of agony or pain, but of shock. "What the- What's all the commotion?" Tread asked tiredly, struggling to get up on the floor. "I'm not sure, but I think it has something to do with the pendants."
"Ah, right you said that yesterday. But, I mean, it can't be that bad." Tread stated as he finally got up. But it in fact was that bad. Elves, fairies, and all sorts of mythical creatures flooded the streets, screeching and groaning about there new forms. "Oh... So it is that bad."
A loud howl was heard deep in the junkyard, followed by soft whimpers. The Sleipnir dashed off immediately in search of who was making the sound, he might have been a himbo but he could tell if anyone or anything needed help. "Be careful Tread, it sounded like a wolf." Harl called, spreading his wings and following after.
Just under a pile of broken down cars was yet another creature, a bushy tail wagged out in the open. Upon hearing Tread galloping closer to the wreck, the creature struggled to hide the tail. "Looks like someone got caught in a landslide. Don't worry dog guy, I'll get you out of there in half a second!" The racer declared.
A loud squeak came from the wreck as Tread kicked away all the cars away. "Huh? I've never seen a wolf with blue fur before."
"Blue fur? Wait that might be Poppy!" Harl stated, looking at the wolf girl. She was whimpering and whining, confused and concerned. "Poppy, Poppy, if that is you, I don't think there is anybody else in this city with blue hair. Anyway, everything is going to be okay." He said calmly, which helped calmed the pop sensation turned wolf to the point she could speak english. "H...Harl? What is happening? Did god smite me for calling furries out online? I didn't mean it-"
"No, Poppy, you did nothing wrong. I think it has something to do with the pendants we got from that new store. We just need to stay calm and go talk to him and get an explaination." Harl stated. "Wait why are you even in the Junk Yard?" Tread asked.
"I-I was going to, like, talk about this to my grandpa, but he was asleep still, and like, you and Harl are the only guys in this city who I trust besides him." Poppy explained, her tail between her legs.
The two horses kept close to the werewolf, keeping her from hyperventilating more. "There has to be some way to at least look humanish. If you guys can speak English, maybe you'll look more like yourself?" She thought. Her snout slowly sank back into a mouth and nose. "But I'm still so fuzzy, and look at these claws. My fans aren't going to like this."
Harl nudged her up onto his back. "We'll figure it out on the way." Unfortunately it wouldn't be as easy as it looks. "It's closed? But I thought Cassian would be here for sure! Weird, the store looks so empty too." He asked. "He must have been robbed!"
Just the word robbed had Tread galloping at the door and kicking it down. "It's open now! Um, how many pendants did he sell again? I could have sworn he had a lot more here!" The Sleipnir looked around the now empty shop. "Looks like the work of that Fendrich guy! He must have kidnapped him and took all his stuff!"
"Um, Tread? Let's not jump to conclusions here. He was out on his mega yatch the day we bought our stuff. He wouldn't have known about this place." The Pegasus remarked. "Unless his henchmen raided without his order, which isn't like them to do."
"I mean I guess. Though the only other option is that he left town after selling them. But why would he do that? I mean I'm no businessman but that seems like a lot of money to rent a brick-and-mortar store just to leave it a day after starting a business." Tread started looking for if there were any clues.
There weren't many clues though, just an empty building and a few sparkles in the carpet from the particles of crystals on the carpet and the faint scent of lilac engraved into the walls. "Well, that is odd that someone would just pack up shop after one day, especially since it was a popular shop, but... Maybe he had cynical plans?"
"Imma kick his balls if he did. Even if he did, what sick pleasure does he get from this?" Tread asked. "Maybe the Pendants were cursed! He may have cursed them!" He continued
"Tread he may know magic but that doesn't mean he cursed them." Harl stated. "IDK Harl, I mean with everything that happened and knowing he up and left, that makes me more likely to believe that he did curse them, and he ruined my music career. Now I'm going to be a stinky hairy dog woman thing..." Poppy sighed getting upset again.
Harl wasn't going to take that. "No, there has to be a way to fix this."
The looked through whatever was left behind, all that they found was a cracked crystal ball and a vial of potion. "Eurgh, roses smell much better." She grumbled. "We need to find him and now! Oooh he's going to be in so much trouble once I get my hands on him!"
"Let's just take a deep breath now, we won't get things done if we keep getting mad. What we need is a plan, something that can help everyone in the city." The Pegasus declared. "Hmm, I wonder. This usually works in stories I've read." Harl closed his eyes, visioning himself as a human again.
He thought long and hard, hoping it would have some effect. He could feel his head reshape itself once again, it wasn't quite as painful as before. He could feel a pair of arms grow out of his torso, but still had all four hooves on the ground. "Um, do I look any different?" He asked.
"Whoa! Now you're like a pega-man thing! Umm, what are they called again? The guy with the horse legs?" Tread then went to have a go, fidgeting around as he struggled to concentrate. He wasn't used to focusing on anything that wasn't his unbeatable track record.
"You mean a centaur? Hey, at least I'm sorta human. Looks like you're changing too."
"Really? Great! Anyway, I guess I should get some clothes on, or just a shirt. I don't think I could get pants on with this many legs. Not that I don't mind my chest being out, it is cold out." Tread stated using hand gestures to his exposed chest. From hearing this, Harl realized he was practically naked, or at least naked from the waist up. "Ah! Oh your right, maybe we should put something on."
Conveniently for him, he had a spare shirt in his workshop. However, Tread had a different idea. He ran through town, leaping and bounding over and under different creatures until he made it to his place. And once he was shirted he went to Harl's place, breaking through a window before grabbing a shirt and bolting back. "Here, Harl. I-"
"Oh, it's okay Tread, I already have a shirt." Harl stated, dressed in his shirt. "Oh, uh, I broke your window to get this so uh... Whoopsies I guess." Tread stated before turning his attention to Poppy. "Hmmm... Listen, maybe you could just shave the extra hair off since basically a half-human werewolf is a hairy guy." He explained.
"I'm going to need, like a wax job to get rid of all this extra fuzz. Like double time!" She squeaked. "I'm probably the most dangerous looking creature in the city!"
"Aw I'm sure there's way more dangerous looking guys around here.... Wait, that's probably not a good thing. Umm, well I mean if none of us are humans so you won't be so out of place?" The himbo attempted to assure his friend. "Heh, remember how grouchy Dr. Wexler looked seeing everyone buy from here?"
"He even threw his Hydra pendant right in the dumpster. Wait, that means he's still human! Hopefully he can help us out. That is if he doesn't immediately judge us for believing in magic." Harl suggested. "The research center shouldn't be too far, especially with how fast Tread can be. You think he's in?"
There was only one way to find out. What they didn't know was Cassian was watching their every move. "It's worked like a charm, the smaller creatures are all panicking." He purred, stroking his crystal ball. "Of course that scientist is going to be a problem. Oh well, I could always send one of my own on him."
