~Chapter 3~
Duke woke up an hour later, somehow not awoken by the yelling and chaos of the previous hour. However, the officer noticed something. He felt heavier than normal.
"That's weird. I swore I didn't eat that much last night. I don't think I even ate yesterday. Weird..." he thought feeling his skin. "Man my skin's so dry! It's almost like scales! I really need to moisturize more often."
He had no idea that he in fact was a dragon. That was until he decided to get dressed and noticed that he actually had scales. "What the..." he started, squinting his eyes a little to see if maybe his eyes weren't adjusted right.
Unfortunately for him, his eyes were adjusted and he was looking at himself in the mirror. He was a large fat dragon. But not really a menacing one, he was more cute than scary.
But the unfamiliarity of the situation made Duke panic. "W-What?! How is this possible?!" He asked himself bewildered.
His scales were navy blue, just like his old uniform. He had claws the size of daggers on his fingers and toes, a pair of large wings at his shoulder blades and a thick tail covered in spikes. "Ack!! I can't go out looking like this! What's going to happen if the police mistake me for a monster attacking the city?"
He waddled all around his apartment, knocking over various things with his swishing tail. He was in such a panic that he didn't even realize it until he finally calmed down, holding his favourite Cubby plush. "Okay.. Just take a deep breath. Maybe this will go away after a while." Duke thought to himself. "A little TV should help ease my mind."
Unfortunately it didn't do much, but it did show that he wasn't the only one who suddenly changed overnight. "Well so much for no one becoming anything too dangerous, a huge red dragon just knocked over the old dynamite factory!" Gabby screamed. Yesterday she bought a dryad pendant and was now regretting it. "Hey! Don't look at me like that, Craig! I saw you eying those gemstones too!"
"Another dragon?" Getting up on his clawed feet, Duke spread his wings and squeezed hard out the window. "I never arrested a mythical creature before, but this is for the city!" He declared, flapping his wings as hard as he could to where the other giant reptile was causing havoc. "Freeze you!!"
The red dragon immediately shot their head up, only to grunt at the sight of him. "Oh come on! Can't I have a little fun like this?"
"Wait.. Daisy?"
"Yeah, it's me. Anyway, don't worry, I'm the same arsonist as before but, y'know, obviously different." Daisy pointed out. "Please don't cause too much damage, we aren't even sure how powerful we are- Wait but how are we even dragons? I mean, it's a complete mystery." The officer stated confused. "It's not that much of a mystery." A voice called from above him.
That voice was familiar to Duke, in a good way. Looking up, he saw a long dragon, slender and sleek with navy blue, cyan, and pink scales. "Sup, bruh." it spoke lowering itself down to the blue dragon's eye level.
"Chief Wheeler? You're also a dragon?" Duke asked, in shock. "Dukesy chill it's not that shocking. Anyway, I think this sich is caused by the pendants we got yesterday. Though I'm not sure why your sis is a dragon too unless she got one." Wheeler stated as floated there.
"You mean those pendants from that magic shop? Nah, I don't really wear like necklace necklaces." Daisy stated. "I prefer chockers."
"Right. Maybe it's a link connected to the bloodline perhaps. Chief has your dad turned into a dragon?" Duke asked, causing Wheeler to pause. "...Hell if I know. But he probably is if what you said is true." The chief responded.
The three dragons were starting to block traffic just standing around in the streets, not helped by all the damage Daisy caused earlier. "Just how many buildings did you knock down? You know it's going to take a long while for everything to be rebuilt." The blue dragon said, waddling his way back to the police station.
"Oh come on, I finally get to be an absolute destruction machine and I don't get to even set the Fendrich Tower ablaze?"
Duke kept a close grip on his sister's arm, even as a human she could be unpredictable. "At least Bennett is only a house elf, I think Alan got a Rok, a giant bird from middle eastern myths. And since Poppy got the werewolf pendant it might also affect Grizzled. Not that he would notice either way."
The Long decided to make a dramatic entrance in his new form, crashing through the ceiling and posing in front of his desk. The landing caused such a shake that the small elf was knocked over onto his rear. "Ack! You could have stepped on me!" He snapped.
"Whoops, didn't mean to scare ya, Cap. How's being short holding up? I mean you're tiny compared to two giant dragons, an ancient bird dude, and a werewolf." Wheeler joked. "Oh yeah, you don't mind us having another Draco guest here right?"
It was a lot for the police captain to take in, he just responded by smacking his head on the desk. "Is there anyone in this city who hasn't changed into anything?" He groaned. "Just one? You'd think Cassian would know if his goods could cause this, right?"
"I mean yeah, but he wouldn't have sold them if they would cause this right? I mean there's a law that requires that information." Duke stated. "Hmm... wait I just remembered something!"
"Really? What is it Detain?" Bennett asked. "Well, I overheard when Cassian was talking to Tread that the items in the shop cost more than he'd think what if... What if they're cursed?" Duke asked.
"Bro what if they are? It's very likely! I mean think about it right, he sold us pendants and his shop vanished-"
"Wait his shop just disappeared?" Duke questioned, wondering how a whole store disappeared so quietly. "Yeah, bro. It's gone. Not like the building but like the insides are gone! I flew there before going to find you this morning." The chief stated floating around the office. Floating around the room was the closest thing to skateboarding he could do since his body was too long for the board.
"Gave out pendants to practically the entire city and then just left? This is definitely suspicious behavior, even for someone who believes in magic like himself. It's almost like he's interacted with all those different creatures before. And the way he talked about my dragon pendant, I wonder if he's even from earth." The blue dragon thought out loud. "Surely he left some trace, at least a clue of sorts as to where he might have gone next."
Bennett climbed his desk, getting the attention of the three dragons. "There may have been suspects who saw him leave overnight, we'll need to-" but before he could finish his sentence, the phone rang. "Eh? I wasn't expecting any calls today."
Picking up the receiver, he was met with the voice of a very angry scientist. "Get to the research center right away! Don't ask at qvestions, I just vant to run some tests on your little necklaces." Dr. Wexler grunted. "I vill show that Cassian that science is the key to everything! Oh ja, and try to make you human again."
"You're certain? I suppose we don't have any other option. But how am I supposed to drive myself there?" The police captain asked, only to immediately get his answer when Wheeler threw him onto his back. "Ack!"
"Just hang on tight dude! I'll try not to do any midair flips on the way over." The long grinned. "Time to get some answers!"
The siblings followed after the much larger dragon, flapping their wings as fast as they could. "I just hope nothing seriously bad occurred while we were talking." Duke thought as he flew. "Phew, I didn't think I'd be so heavy."
"Well you are a dragon. And dragons are pretty heavy. Anyway, how do we become more human-like?" Daisy asked. "Uh... I'm not really sure. I mean Bennett is chill for this he's small." Wheeler stated, giving himself an idea. "Yo, cap, can I place you down for you to speak on our behalf since we're like mega huge?"
"I suppose there's no other option. I'll go." The captain said as he was dropped off at the front door. After entering he sees the scientist and a few others. Those others were Poppy and Harl, and I guess tread, though he was strapped to a table getting tested.
"I see you made it captain. I assume zhat the others are too big to vit?"
"They are. I'm not sure how to get them to 'be human again' like that you said over the phone." Bennett stated. "Oh, well that's easy, you just have to think about being human and it'll make you human enough to make them able to get in." Harl said as he joined the conversation.
"Wait really? It's that simple?" The chief asked before getting a nod. "I see. Well better relay this information to the chief and the lieutenant." He continued as he started to go back outside to do so.
"Just think about being human? I didn't think it would be that easy." Daisy grumbled. The siblings and Wheeler became more human-sized, their faces also now became human aside from the police chief's horns and the spikes going down the western dragons' backs. "Well, that's something at least."
Duke found that he was still somewhat pear-shaped even in his anthro dragon form, he needed to be squeezed inside the research center. "Eep! I think I fell over, can someone help me up?" He squeaked, Wheeler was quick to hoist him up by the tail. "Thanks, Chief."
Bennett himself managed to grow to waist height as well, although he was hoping to become his normal height again if he focused hard enough. "I suppose this should do for now. What do you know about the pendants so far? Is it anything you can decipher?"
"Pfft, of course! Vhat do you take me for? Some sort of doof who vould buy from somevone claiming to be magic?" The German scientist retorted. "Vhat I could figure out from each pendant is zhat they all use the same type of mineral that surrounds the gemstone zhat causes this transformation, Black Tourmaline. Pretty to look at, but impractical."
Dr Ravenhurst entered with Tread still strapped to a stretcher. With all the complaining her colleague was doing about the existence of magic, she just took off her pendant and kept it hidden in her desk until he finally went to sleep. "It's not just surface level either, their DNA is being altered still."
"Can I get off this bed thingy?" Tread said, straining against the straps of the stretcher. "Ah, I didn't think you'd get up, you were under a lot of ani-"
"I don't care! Get me out, I gotta run around!" The racer started thrashing around to the best of his ability before being released and starting running around the lab. "Anyvay, I believe that there's a way to vix this." Dr. Wexler stated. "Ah sweet! How long will it take to find a solution to this prob?" Wheeler asked. "Vell, considering that the research in minerals, nor genetic engineering, is rather shlim, so I'm not entirely sure when we'll find a solution."
"Take all the time you need to fix this. What's important for the time being is that we need to calm everyone in the city down to not cause any mishaps." Bennett stated. "I guess, but I'm not sure if everyone would listen due to the overwhelming shock of transformation." Wheeler stated. "We'll have to host a town hall meeting then, or something. God, I should have prepared for this!" Bennett stated. "Hey man, it's not like you could have planned this as a possibility." Tread stated as he stopped running around.
"I'll try and round up everyone, I'm sure they'd recognize me even as a Pegasus centaur." Harl offered. "Hopefully the mayor is alright, I haven't seen him at all since this whole fiasco started. I hope he's alright."
"I'm just glad Fendrich's out of town, we won't have to deal with him until his yacht comes around!"
