Chapter 14: Gender Reveal!
Jack's POV:
Today is the day we find out the gender of our baby, more like our kids because we're having the baby reveal Saturday with family and a few friends that are coming.
We wanted the kids to hold onto the envelope because Raegan wanted to surprise us with cupcakes and if we would let her, throw a party but the mess would be unbearable for us to pick up.
Anyway, we're both getting ready for our doctor's appointment as Jane contemplated on what to wear because some of her outfits no longer fit her and she had just went maternity shopping.
"Honey?"
"Yes babe?"
"I have nothing to wear." Jane huffed in annoyance as I tried to help her find something.
"We'll find something honey."
"Yeah, says the one who can wear whatever he wants."
"C'mon honey, that's not nice."
"It is too. Men don't have to go through carrying a baby the size of a cantaloupe around."
"Janie, I understand your frustration on not finding an outfit but don't be cruel to us men."
"I'm not, but our baby is being is being stubborn and I'm ready to take a nap."
"Well, we get to go see our baby today and our kids are ready to see if their gonna have a little brother or sister."
"Honey, I feel like we're havin' a boy. No doubt with how I feel at this moment." Jane said as the kids came scurrying into our room.
"C'mon y'all, we wanna see our baby brother or sister." Raegan said.
"Alright, let's go." Jane said as we walked out of room, down the stairs and out to the car.
...
Jane's POV:
We arrived at the doctor's office as we walked in as I signed in, waiting to be called as we were called back.
"Jane Montgomery?" The nurse called as we got up and walked back.
"Mama, do we have to step out of the room for any reason?" Connor said.
"No baby. He's just gonna run the ultrasound wand over my stomach to let us hear the baby's heartbeat and he'll hand you or Connor the picture with the gender on it."
"Okay."
Her doctor started the ultrasound as he made sure they could not see the gender.
"How's the baby's heartbeat?"
"Really strong and would y'all like to find out the gender?"
"No, we are planning on doing something Saturday. We wanna surprise our friends and family."
"Alright, I'll just hand these to one of you." Their doctor said as he handed them to Connor.
"Well, he or she is perfectly healthy and you're good to go."
"Thank you." Jack said as he helped Jane wipe off the gel and get down.
"You're welcome."
...
They arrived home to see that there was a car in the driveway, noticing that they belonged to Jack's mother.
"Great, we get to spend four glorious days with your mother dear."
"I know baby, but it's a good thing."
"I know." Jack said sarcastically as they walked up their driveway and into the house.
...
"Hello mama." Jack said as he hugged and kissed his mother's cheek.
"Hello sweetheart. How are my grandbabies?" She asked.
"Kids, say hello to your grandmother."
"Hey memaw." They said at the same time.
"I can't wait to catch up with the both of you. Connor, you and I can watch football together and Raegan, maybe we can talk about boys."
"Sorry memaw, but I take all my dating advice from mama."
"I know more about dating than you mama does dear." She said as Raegan was already upstairs.
"Seriously mama?"
"What? I do."
"You make Jane sound like she never dated before me.''
"And she had to take my son away from me to prove a point."
"Mama, please be nice to my wife and now I know why she hides from you everytime you come to visit."
"I don't always hide from her, but when I do, it's for a really good reason." Jane said as his mother rolled his eyes.
...
Later on that day, Jane was preparing supper when Raegan walked into the kitchen as she started pacing back and forth.
"Is something wrong sweetheart?" Jane asked her daughter.
"Yes, can you hide me from memaw?" Raegan asked as she continued on. "She keeps giving me advice on dating on what to and not to do."
"Go hide in my office baby and I'll tell her you needed to use it for homework."
"Raegan!" They heard her call out.
"More like quiet time." Raegan said as she made a dash to Jane's office.
She made her way downstairs into the kitchen where Jane was preparing chicken parmesan and fresh green beans.
"Jane, where's Raegan?"
"She's doing homework and needs some quiet time."
"Well, I thought we could go shopping for her date tomorrow."
"You knew about that?"
"I knew she was being secretive until I overheard her phone conversation with her best friend, Rachel."
"You were eavesdropping on my daughter's phone conversation?"
"Don't think I never did when you and Jack were dating."
"That's an invasion of privacy."
"Oh grow up Jane, she's fifteen."
"For your information, I know how old she is. I was there the night she was born."
"Is she on birth control?"
"Woah! I walked in at the wrong time!" Connor said as he turned around and went to walk out.
"No honey, I need to talk to you. Come here and sit with memaw."
"Lori, don't you dare.''
"Jane, he's my grandson."
"Well, he's my son and go wash up for supper baby and tell your sister and too as well." Jane said as Connor practically ran out of the kitchen.
"You know something? You just hate when I come here, don't you?"
"Well, it's not like I enjoy your company but for the sake of my husband and babies, I'd do anything to make them happy." Jane said as she tossed the green beans into a pot to steam them along with some carrots and cauliflower.
"What on earth are you making?"
"Chicken Parmesan, steamed green beans with broccoli and carrots and rolls."
"And the kids eat it?"
"Yes they do because I have a rule in my house that if you don't like what I cook for supper, then you can starve." Jane said.
"Mama, is the food ready yet?" Connor asked from the living room.
"Not yet baby."
"No daddy it's not." Connor yelled up the stairs.
"It'll be done soon, right?"
"Yes."
"Good, unless you burn it."
"I don't burn anything, unless you keep testing my patience and then, yours will be the only one burnt to a crisp."
"Let's try to get along this weekend."
"I'd like that." Jane smiled as she started setting the kitchen table.
...
They all sat down for dinner as they passed the food around and began the conversation of the evening.
"So darling, did you find out the gender of my new grandbaby yet?"
"Not yet mama. We'll find out Saturday."
"The doctor's office is closed on Saturday."
"Memaw, mama and daddy are gonna bite into a cupcake to reveal the gender of the baby."
"Do y'all know?"
"I gotta take the ultrasound to the bakery tomorrow for my job interview and after, I have to grab the desserts for the party."
"Gender reveals are so silly." Lori said as Jane rolled her eyes.
"Well, I think it's sweet." Connor said.
"Yeah, I mean, mama and daddy are excited and so are we."
"It'd just be easier to open the envelope to reveal it than give my grandbaby a sugar rush."
"Well, we wanted to have a party to celebrate the gender of our child mama and the kids and all of us are excited for Saturday." Jack said as Jane leaned against the back of her chair with her hands on her stomach.
"I'm team girl." Raegan said.
"I'm team boy." Connor said.
"I'm fine with either. A boy or girl is fine with me."
"We'll find out Saturday if we're having a boy or girl and I'm so excited." Jack said.
...
Fast-forward to Saturday
It was now Saturday as both Jack and Jane were excited about finding out the gender of their baby.
Jane was applying her makeup and Jack was shaving when Jane felt their baby start moving around.
"I believe someone is excited and ready for us to put a name to you so we won't keep calling you a little baby or "the baby"." Jane said as she applied her foundation and powder.
"I love you Janie." Jack said as he held her close and gave her a deep kiss.
"I love you too Jack."
"Mama, nana is here." Connor said, knocking on his parents bedroom door.
"Okay baby. Has anyone else arrived yet?"
"Yes."
"Who?''
"Nana, all of our aunts, your old co-workers, your old and new assistant and some other people."
"Okay baby, we'll be out soon."
"Alright."
"Now, time for bronzer, blush and highlighter." Jane said as she got to work.
She applied the rest of her makeup and took her hair down out of hot curlers and put her dress on and walked with Jack downstairs to greet their guests and mingle with them until it was time to reveal the gender of their baby.
As they step outside they see their family around the table, wondering if it they were gonna have a little boy or girl.
"I say she's having a girl."
"No, it's a boy."
"C'mon Jane, just make the announcement already!" Her sister yelled.
"Y'all just got here."
"So? I wanna know if I'm gonna have another niece or nephew!" She said excitedly.
"I wanna talk to everyone before we reveal the gender of our son or daughter." Jane said.
"You're no fun!"
"Neither are you, so quit complaining and mingle."
"I am."
...
Towards the end of the party, Connor and Raegan stood between their parents as they decided to make a speech.
"Can we have everyone's attention please?" Raegan asked as everyone stood around them.
"We would like to thank everyone for coming out today to celebrate the reveal of our baby brother or sister and now, to do that honor is our mom and dad." Connor said.
"Thank you baby and I know some of you don't like these kind of events, but today is a very special day. Today is the day we get to reveal the gender of our baby and place a name to him or her so that our family and friends can add a new name to their list of names."
"So, without further or do, let's see if we're gonna have a boy or girl. Are you ready baby?" Jack asked her.
"I'm ready honey!" Jane bounced on her heels excitedly.
"Raegan, do you have the cupcake?"
"Here you go." Raegan handed it to her parents as they smiled and everyone had their phones and cameras already rolling and recording.
"Is everyone ready?"
"Bite into that cupcake already!" Someone said as they all laughed.
"Alright, let's do it." Jack said as they were laughing.
"I'm about to do it myself if y'all don't." Jane's sister said.
"Oh hush." Jane said.
"Ready! 1... 2... 3..." Jack counted down as they bit into the cupcake and they seen the color of the icing and they hugged each other.
"Is it a boy or a girl?" Someone asked from the back.
"It's a..."
"What is it?"
"IT'S A BOY!" All four of them cheered and chanted as they hugged and everyone cheered and hugged each other.
Author's Note: Yay! It's a boy! So, do y'all like the name Sawyer or Grayson? I'm going back and forth on the names. What y'all think? Anyway, I hope y'all enjoy! ❤💙❤💙❤💙❤💙
