fifty six
Asra's sudden appearance during dinner was unexpected. He loomed over me, my forkful of pasta halfway to my mouth as I peered up at him. Chewing slowly, I held his gaze as he remained quiet. Only when I swallowed did his eyes drop to my throat, his pupils expanding.
"Can I help you?" I quipped, sipping my coke.
Oh, I was glad I chose a straw today.
"You have finished your shift." He stated, blinking oddly.
I frowned, wondering what kind of robot replacement this was. It needed a few more prototypes before being released because it sure was melancholy as hell.
"Good observation skills." I smirked.
"Come to my office."
"If you haven't already noticed, Mister Robot Alpha, I am eating."
His eyes dropped to my plate before flickering back to my face. His fists clenched at his sides, throat bobbing as he swallowed. Asra was acting strange, and I wasn't sure if I liked it.
"What's going on?" I scowled.
"Nothing." He was quick to answer. "I need to speak with you."
"What about?" I cocked my head.
"We found something."
My heart palpitated. "What?"
A small glimmer of a smirk lifted his cheek before it fell back into his weird, intense stare. "Meet me in my office."
Sir, yes, sir.
Asra turned and left without a word and for a second I just sat and stared at the place he disappeared. He had never been so robotic, and it made me wonder if this was how his pack members felt. It was unnerving to say the least, but I at least saw a glimmer of attraction every time I swallowed.
Oh, he wanted me.
Sucker.
Blinking back into the present, I ate my pasta as quickly as I could. Scurrying from the table like a rat, I placed my plate into one dishwasher and took my drink with me. Reaching Asra's office in no time, I let myself in, huffing as the door's weight made me nearly spill my drink.
"That was quick." Asra mused.
"Well, when a robot man tells you there's a discovery, you listen."
Asra's lips quirked before he typed something on his computer. I took that as my queue to move. Everett was sitting in a chair opposing him, and I greeted him softly as I took the seat beside him.
"Well? Spit it out then. This isn't a drama series."
The two of them shared looks, and I glanced between both nervously. It had only been a few days, and already they had me on edge with what it could be.
"Beta Flynn." Asra muttered.
"Yes?" I pressed when he didn't continue.
"Beta Flynn Thorne."
I blinked, freezing like a statue as they read my very own surname back to me. As I stared, dumbfounded, he spun the computer screen round for me to read. Alongside his name was his date of birth and his lack of relationship status. I blinked again, taking his surname into my mind.
"What does this mean?" I mumbled.
"It means you are related." Asra began. "But we are unsure how."
"How can you find out? Is there not a record?"
"Everything is missing. Those years surrounding your birth and childhood are not recorded." Everett explained.
My gaze drifted over to him, noticing how awkward he sat as he gave me my answer. "So now what?"
"We found something else," Asra continued. "They sent Flynn on a resource mission just before his records cut out."
"After some digging around, I found they sent him to a human civilisation."
Dread pooled in my stomach, my palms becoming sweaty in my lap. Goosebumps even rose on my arms as my heart raced, readying itself for me to run the fuck away.
"What?" I whispered.
"His assignment was to infiltrate a human town outside of the districts. There is no name, but we have a feeling it may be Evermore because of the link of your surname."
Swallowing, I picked at the hem of my chef shirt. "What does this mean?"
"It means he could either be your father, uncle... even brother."
"He's over sixty years old." I whispered.
"Do you remember your father's birthday?"
"Well, of course. It was... Uh..." I frowned, realising I couldn't remember.
Asra's lips quirked with a sad smile. "We're definitely going to need a witch."
"Witches are evil." I stated.
"Not all of them." He shook his head. "You were probably bewitched to think so, so you never went in search of any."
"What about... what about my sister? What does this mean?" I breathed.
"We can conduct a blood test." Everett interrupted. "It would be easier if we could extract some DNA from Flynn himself, but we would need a suitable reason to visit their home."
"Already planned." Asra mused.
"It is?" I wondered, my head snapping between the two of them.
"You may have left something in their bathroom, Ailia."
"I did?" I whispered, confused.
"Yes, your dress, of course. You were so tipsy and hungover you forgot to take it out of the bathroom." Asra chuckled. "I have contacted Alpha Augustus and explained the situation. He tried to have it shipped, but I emphasised on the importance of you knowing that it was safe. So, Everett here will retrieve it for you."
Everett's lips curled into a frown, and he begrudgingly nodded. "When do I go?"
"Tomorrow." Asra stated before noticing the male's expression. "You may have the plane."
This had the male's lips quirk slightly, and he nodded with more enthusiasm.
I cleared my throat, catching my mate's attention. "So, we do a DNA test? How long will that take?"
"A week or so," Asra shrugged. "It needs to be done perfectly."
"How are you going to get his blood?"
"A hair will do if I can't make him bleed." Everett muttered. "It may just take longer."
"And then what happens? We get the results and he's..."
"Related to you," Asra affirmed. "Then we have evidence to suggest you are part of something greater than we thought. There is a reason they sent Flynn to a human civilisation, and perhaps if he is deemed trustworthy, we can speak to him."
"How would we do that?" I asked.
"We study his behaviour, have people watching him. It is easy to pay wolves from other packs to get information." Asra shrugged.
That did not make the situation feel any easier. In fact, what if someone was doing the same right now? What if there was someone in this pack watching me?
A shudder rolled over my shoulders and Asra quirked an eyebrow at me.
"You okay?"
I exhaled slowly. "Yeah, just a lot to take in."
"I know." He smiled softly. "But if we find any links to you, it's one step closer to seeing why you are so wolf-like."
"Because being normal is overrated, right?" I rolled my eyes. "I've always been just me, it seems... daunting to suddenly have my entire life on the line."
"Nothing will change." Asra reassured me. "Not straight away, at least. It just means we can figure out who you are."
"But why don't I remember any of this? Not even my dad's birthday?" I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "There is so much going on, and right when I become a luna."
His eyes lightened. "Perhaps the bond is just fuelling your potential."
I grunted a curse, and he smiled, watching me through soft eyes. He then turned to Everett, dismissing him from his duties. Everett had been silent beside me, and I turned my gaze to him.
"Are you sure you can do this?" I wondered.
He turned, his steely gaze holding mine. "Yes, Luna."
Frowning, I nodded. "Okay, well, I wish you luck."
"Thank you, Luna." His lips quirked slightly before he turned and left the room.
Once the door shut behind him, I looked back ahead, only to startle when I found Asra standing before me. I cursed softly, my hand falling onto my chest as my heart raced. Asra chuckled, his hand slipping into my hair as he turned my head to face him.
"It will all work out." He tried.
My nose crinkled and his hand moved to flick it with his fingers. I let out a small protest to which he chuckled at before leaning against the front of his desk before me. I ignored the way his arms tensed up as he pressed leaned into the wood, or the way his shoulders bunched and made his entire torso look taut. This man was trying to distract me, and I wouldn't let it happen!
I mean...
I would try not to let it happen...
"Tulip..."
"Huh?" I wondered, blinking.
He grinned, flashing his teeth with glee. "I asked you a question."
"You did?" I frowned. "What was it?"
"How did the questionnaire go?"
"Oh, that." I nodded. "Good, nearly done with the results."
"How is it looking?"
"They're heavily favourable for shift work." I shrugged. "Most are happy to work six days a week if the days are shorter. And of course, night-time is the most preferred shift."
"Why, 'of course'?" Asra cocked his head.
"Lie in, duh!" I chuckled. "Humans need more sleep than you animals."
He chuckled, shaking his head. "Okay, Tulip. Let me know the moment you get all the results and we can go from there."
"I will get all the results, come up with an outcome, and then I will let you know what you have to do." I smirked.
"Oh, that confident are we?" He chuckled.
Lifting my chin, I nodded. "It's my job. I am the luna."
His eyes flashed in that all familiar way that made me stand from the chair and shake my finger at him. Pupils dilated, Asra stared at me with hunger in his eyes. Taking a step away from him, I slowly made my way toward the door as he watched me like a predator.
"Now, now, Wolfie. No hanky-panky today." I taunted.
His lips curled, canines flashing playfully.
I squealed as I ran from the room, waiting for the door to slam behind me, but of course, it never came. My feet padded heavily, and I laughed with glee when I heard him chasing me. I wondered for a moment if he would let me win, but a glance over my shoulder showed me how close he truly was.
Squealing, I prayed the elevator was open or someone was waiting but, alas, fate hated me. Slamming my hand into the button, my head fell against the wall as my pursuer caught up to me. My breaths were as heavy as his footsteps. His kindness to make himself louder around me was not unnoticed.
"Did nobody ever tell you that you cannot run from a wolf?" He teased.
I laughed nasally. "It's a rather thrilling chase, I must say."
"Well, I won." He puffed his chest. "Now I want my prize."
The elevator doors dinged open, and I eyed them before eyeing the ten-foot gap between us. If I slipped into doors at the last moment...
"Tulip..." Asra taunted.
I fluttered my eyelashes at him, pushing away from the wall. Standing with my back arched, I looked up at him through innocent eyes. His jaw flexed, body tight as he watched me.
"I'm not doing anything..." I pouted.
The doors closed and at the last possible second; I darted inside them.
I heard the clatter of his footfalls just as the doors shut and my hand smacked against the top floor. I held my breath, waiting for him to win and the doors to open. But when the elevator lurched and took me through a quick death-trip, I grinned in victory.
I suppose I truly was part-wolf, 'cause I am super-speedy.
The elevator dinged its arrival, and I poked my head through the open doors to check the hallways. Grinning when they were all clear, I held my head with pride as I walked toward the bedroom. Unlocking the door, I kicked off my shoes and placed my paperwork on the sideboard, glory blossoming in my chest.
I had outrun the wolf.
Stripping off my clothes, I headed toward the bathroom. With my naked ass out in the open, I strutted my way through the door. The moment the wood shut behind me, his damn voice creeped into my ears.
"How did I know you were going to shower?"
The question was rhetorical, but I cursed. Turning around slowly, I crossed my arms and cocked my him with defiance as I glared at my mate.
"How did you beat the elevator?" I frowned.
"I am an alpha." He shrugged, relaxing against the vanity.
I huffed, clicking my tongue at him. "Cheater."
"You tricked me." He deadpanned.
"You're an alpha." I taunted. "A human out-smarted you."
"You may not be a human." His eyebrows twitched, teasing.
I hesitated, not liking the fact he could be right. I didn't feel like anyone else, and didn't like the thought that I could be anyone other than me. My shoulders sagged, and I sighed as I turned on the water. Asra noticed my mood changed, his body becoming tense.
I stepped into the shower, letting the cool water shock my body. I heard a shuffling before Asra's naked warmth enveloped my back.
"What's wrong?" He whispered.
"What if I don't want to be anyone else?" I muttered.
His hands rested on my shoulder, pulling me into him. "Blood won't change who you are."
"But I remember nothing!" I exclaimed. "I can't even picture his face properly anymore. Even thinking of photographs is blurry."
"I can get in touch with a witch..." He suggested. "It will be painless."
"Witches sound freaky." I muttered.
He chuckled, kissing my temple. "I will find the least freaky witch."
"You better." I muttered. "And what about Eris?"
The vampire.
"What about her?"
"She is suspicious."
"I know, we know."
"And?"
"So?" He frowned.
"Are you looking into her?" I wondered, craning my neck so his lips would fall onto the skin.
He fell into my ploy like a sucker, nibbling my exposed throat. "Of course."
"Good."
"Good." He agreed. "Now, let's get you cleaned up..."
