She's the One [31: Always - Part 2]
"Hi everyone, I'm Adrien Agreste, and for those who don't know me I'm the groom." A barrage of laughs echoed through the room as Adrien started to deliver his groom's speech. For someone so used to public speaking, he couldn't deny the pressure he was suddenly feeling; the undeniable nervousness for what he had to do.
Taking a deep breath, he looked down at his notes before looking at his wife. Oh God, Marinette was his wife that alone was enough to give him a panic attack. This was real, wasn't it? No longer was it just Ladybug as his wife, it was Marinette too. They were finally officially a family — in their eyes at least.
Her smile was dazzling, as was she. The more he looked at her the more he understood the phrase 'blushing brides' because she most certainly was. The pink hue on her cheeks from the joy of the day, plus the champagne she was sipping made her look picture perfect, and damn he felt lucky. She was his wife. His.
The moment he saw her walking down the aisle he lost it. His emotions betrayed the manly image he'd been perceived to have, instead crying equally to when Emma was born. Marinette looked exquisite. She was wearing a dress not too dissimilar to Kate Middleton, though he was quite sure his Princess had outdown the real one.
The white tulle of her dress fell perfectly down her legs as the white lace wrapped around her arms flawlessly, the sweetheart neckline framing her to perfection, everything about her was perfection. She was a dream, and she'd managed to make him do the impossible thing of falling even more in love with her. It's true what they saw 'love is endless', and the feeling was pure ecstasy, he would never get enough.
"That could change depending on this speech, Buttercup!" The matron of honour shouted out from next to Marinette, causing a second round of laughs to circulate through the room. He was quite sure Alya had taken great advantage of the open bar, taking her duties seriously and, apparently, testing every alcoholic beverage they had available was one of them. Adrien made a mental note to do the same thing at hers and Nino's wedding; although he'd dread to think what would happen if he got that drunk again. Maybe buy a Ferrari or a vacation home in the Bahamas, although both of those did actually sound quite appealing.
Everyone now knew the Agreste family drunk = a mistake. He knew a sweepstakes was going around about tonight's shenanigans and he dreaded to think what some people were guessing.
"Thanks for that." He replied. The laughing continued as Marinette discreetly reached up to stroke her husband's forearm before trailing down his leg (with a quick grope on his butt) before placing it back to the table. He bent slightly and kissed the top of her head, she looked divine, as did his daughter who was currently chasing bubbles with Marinette's Nona, Gina.
"Before we begin," Adrien said, "I've been asked to announce that my best man and groomsman have two bets going on tonight; first how long it'll take me to cry in my own speech, the second how long it'll take me to cry at Nino's. If you want to quickly place one, Nino is situated here at the top table, and Luka is over at the bar. Marinette's bridesmaid, Kagami, will be organising payouts at the end of the speeches. Mainly because she is the only one still sober." Another round of laughs and he was ready. The stress had gone and it was time. Oh God, he hoped he didn't cry.
"Gosh, what an emotional day it's been. Even the cake is in tiers!" A groan was heard beside him as Marinette slammed a hand over her face, Tom breaking out into wild laughter at the pun declaring it was a 'good one'.
"I always thought when I got married I would easily be able to write my speech, anyone who knows me will tell you the amount of times I've attempted to woo my now wife with words of adoration and love. Those same people will also tell you how they failed to work, for at least three years. She blames me; I blame her."
"Hey," Marinette shouted, slapping the back of his thigh, tears already clouding her glorious blue eyes. "It was your fault." She laughed. His hand reached out and grabbed hers, placing it to his lips as he felt her smooth skin meet his.
"So I searched on Google and it told me to start with the easy sections. My thank yous. So, firstly I would like to thank the beautiful bridesmaids, Alya and Kagami, not only for coping with our stress and looking good for our wedding pictures, but for making sure Marinette was only fashionably late to the aisle. I must admit if it'd been another ten minutes I would have thought she'd abandoned me." He reached down and turned his page onto the next one. Each sheet bullet pointed notes to remember as he moved through the service.
"My next thank you is to my groomsmen. Nino and Luka, you have been a rock through this. As you all know I can't function without Marinette, but having these two around definitely helped with the things I couldn't share with her. For example this speech. So thank you both. Also as most of you know, Marinette 'lost' her wedding ring and I would like to thank my two main men for not dobbing me in with my wife for my petty theft and helping me set up the most convoluted engagement I could think of." He turned the page again.
"Next I would like to send out a special thanks to my father for not being here this evening, after getting himself locked up again and threatening my pregnant wife I decided he probably wouldn't want to come." The room laughed once more, Adrien taking a quick drink of his water before continuing.
"Here, here!" Alya shouted, lifting her glass to the crowd. Nino sprung into action, moving from his seat next to Adrien over to Alya and placing a hand over her mouth.
"I'll hold her back!" Nino said, lifting Alya off the chair so he could sit down and then pulling her into his lap. Her muffled cries of protest were heard under Nino's hand as Adrien continued with his speech. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, once again feeling Marinette's touch on his leg, a touch of encouragement.
"Next I'd like to raise a toast to those absent today, mostly to my mother who would have adored Marinette and cherished Emma so greatly. It's been hard without her around, especially with those first few months of having Emma and knowing she looked so, so similar. She would have been a diamond in the sky for my mother, but seeing me so happy and in love with Marinette would have meant so much more. When I was young she would tell me fairy tales about Princesses being rescued by knights and princes, how they'd fall in love and live happily ever after; now I know she'd told me a whole bunch of lies."
Marinette's hand squeezed his leg once more in support; she was there, she was always there.
"Happily ever after doesn't come from true love's kiss or a being saved by a hero. They come from hard work, commitment and communication. You don't always get out what you put in, and sometimes you aren't the saviour but the one who needs saving. Though my mother filled my head with stories of love and romance, not at all accurate to life, she did teach me the morals, compassion and love it takes to make a relationship work. So please join me in raising a toast to Emilié Agreste."
Hands raised around the room, each with their glass of Champagne as Adrien's mothers name rang out to different volumes and pitches. He looked down towards Nathalie and noticed the tears bunching in the corner of her eyes, his lips turning in a small smile towards her.
"I suppose if we're roasting absent friends we should also raise a toast to Mr Ramier for keeping myself and M'Lady in business."
A second name sounded around the room as 'Mr Ramier' had his well deserved toast. He may not have been absent as in dead, but he was a huge part in Marinette and his history and deserved some recognition.
"To Tom and Sabine. Thank you for bringing such a wonderful woman into the world. Her love, devotion and compassion is beyond what any of us deserve. There are so many people here today that have been touched by your daughter, and we're all lucky to have crossed paths with her, to have her sunshine demeanour shone over us. But most of all, thank you for accepting me into the family, firstly without knowing who I was, then again once we finally met without the masks. You believed in me, had faith in me and trusted me with your most precious treasure, and for that I am eternally grateful."
A chorus of awwww sounded and some lone person started a clap. Adrien thought it might have been Rose but he couldn't quite pinpoint it exactly. As the clap died down, Adrien picked up his wine glass and had a quick drink ... this was it. Time for the main event.
"I suppose I should thank google too for starting me off on my speech."
A cheer came from the heroes table and Adrien knew for a fact that this time was Kim. He just hoped the athlete didn't heckle him all the way through his speech. He watched Nino, who's hand was firmly on Alya's mouth, nod towards Luka. The taller guy walked over to the table standing behind Kim. Obviously they had this covered.
"Google wasn't actually too good at this next bit. Every site told me to write from my heart, but there are no words to describe how my heart feels, how the warmth and wholeness can be put into words just isn't possible. However, my luck changed one night when I had my fiancée in my arms swaying along to Ed Sheeran as we waited for our dinner to cook.
People seem to think it was love at first sight, but it wasn't. The moment I met Marinette, I knew she was amazing but it wasn't until I met her a day later that I knew I was in love, or what I thought love was at 14.
We've been through a lot, a lot more than what people know or could consider. We've loved, we've lost, we've made mistakes, my own having some of the most catastrophic results; Emma not included."
The child's comedic timing came out to play as she decided now would be the best time to start clapping and squealing, Nona Gina grabbing Emma and giving her a biscuit. The squealing soon stopped as the young child feasted on the snack.
"But one thing I have learned is that the greatest rewards come from the scariest things; whether it being becoming a superhero, unveiling your own father as the villian, getting married on a whim, falling even more deeply in love with your partner and best friend, having a child. Each of these moments have driven me here, to something more than I ever could have imagined because you never know where your life will take you, even if the road is long you need to remember the end is exactly just that; the end. It's the journey which is the destination.
I fell in love at a young age, some people called me crazy; people called me even crazier when I married the same woman eight years later. But the only thing that's crazy is how others haven't fallen head over heels in love with you, Marinette. How they haven't fallen in love with the most brilliant woman to grace this Earth. My light, my sun, my heart."
Adrien turned to face her. His hand stretched out to hold her own.
"Thank you, my beautiful wife; thank you for choosing me over the other 7 billion souls in this world, and not only choosing me to be your husband but also the father of your child; the little bundle of joy I love so dearly with all my heart. When I first met you I wished for love, to immerse myself in you and for the holes that had been digging deeper and deeper to finally be filled by your love and compassion. 10 years later and my wish has finally come true, and even though the journey has been long and sometimes painful, I wouldn't give up all my tragedies for the world, because it led me to you."
Marinette stood from her seat, wrapping an arm around her husband's neck and pulling him down to meet her. The kiss was slow and meaningful, and finished with a couple of quick pecks before she seated herself back down, reaching for a tissue her mother was offering out to her.
"To my wonderful wife, Marinette, my hero and the love of my life. Always."
"Us against the world," she said through a husky voice.
"As always, M'Lady."
The rest of the room held up there glasses in appreciation, Adrien settling beside his wife and kissing her briefly on the lips again, the action broken by the overwhelming need to smile.
"I love you," she said, placing her forehead against his.
"I love you too," he replied, tilting his head to kiss her again.
"Awwww," a voice sounded over the sound system, "it's a shame really to break this up. However, it is the time you've all been waiting for."
As the chants of Nino began to circulate the room, Marinette noticed Alya taking different envelopes to different tables, a slight weave in her walk as she went. The man in question standing beside Adrien and using his arm to pump up the audience.
Adrien looked to Marinette in fear.
What the hell had his best friend got planned?
