Chapter 33: A Heart Divided
Jimin wiped away a tear, his heart aching as he faced Jungkook. "You know, Jungkook, why I left you. I can't give you what you want. What your family wants."
"Stop, Jimin. Just stop with the same answer!" Jungkook's voice was raw, filled with hurt and frustration. He stood up, pacing in front of the bench, trying to contain the whirlwind of emotions within him. "Why can't you see? I love you! Even if I can't have children, that doesn't change how I feel about you."
Jimin felt his breath hitch in his throat, the weight of Jungkook's words crashing over him like a tidal wave. "But your family-"
"My family loves you, Jimin," Jungkook said, his voice steady but filled with a deep longing.
Jimin felt a numbness wash over him, his heart heavy with the weight of Jungkook's words. He turned his gaze to the ground, unwilling to meet Jungkook’s eyes. The silence hung between them, heavy with unspoken truths and lingering pain. Jungkook took a breath, steeling himself to continue.
"They accepted you when I decided to marry you," Jungkook pressed on, his tone pleading for understanding.
"But I can't get pregnant Jungkook. They will not happy with me," Jimin replied softly, his voice barely above a whisper. He felt the familiar ache in his chest, the hurt of inadequacy that had haunted him since the beginning.
"Jimin..." Jungkook's voice trembled, the hurt evident in his eyes. "You can’t keep judging my parents like this. They love you for who you are, not just for what you can give them."
Jimin looked up, confusion and pain written all over his face. "But they want a grandchild, Jungkook. They have expectations."
"They still accept you in their lives, Jimin. They love you even if you can't give them a grandchild. Their love is not conditional," Jungkook insisted, his voice rising slightly with urgency. “You mean so much to them. You were part of their family long before any of this.”
Jimin felt a warmth spread through him, but the doubt lingered. "How can you be so sure? What if they resent me? What if they blame you for choosing me over... someone who could have given them what they want?"
Jungkook shook his head, determination flickering in his gaze. "They would never blame me for loving you. They see the person I see, Jimin. You’re kind, compassionate, and you bring joy into my life in ways I never imagined. You’ve made me a better person. Please, don’t discount yourself. You are more than enough for me and for my family. You’ve already brought them happiness just by being you. Their love for you runs deep; it’s not something that can be measured by the number of grandchildren they have."
Jimin’s heart swelled at Jungkook's words, but the fear still clung tightly. "But what if it’s not enough? What if I fail to be the partner you need?"
"You could never fail me, Jimin. You don’t understand how much you mean to me. It's not about giving me an heir; it’s about being with the person I love. We can build a life together, full of love and laughter, regardless of whether we have kids or not. My heart is with you, and that’s all that matters. I just want you back in my life."
Jimin's breath hitched, the weight of Jungkook's sincerity breaking down the walls he had built around his heart. "I want that too, Jungkook. I just… I just don’t know if I can believe it."
"Then let me show you," Jungkook said softly, reaching for Jimin's hand, holding it gently. "Let me remind you every day how loved you are, how cherished you will always be, no matter what."
Jimin looked down at their intertwined fingers, the warmth spreading through him a stark contrast to the chill of doubt that had settled in his heart for so long. "I’m scared," he admitted, his voice cracking.
"I know," Jungkook said, squeezing his hand reassuringly. "But we can face that fear together. Just take a chance on us again. I promise to stand by you."
The sincerity in Jungkook’s voice was like a balm to Jimin’s wounds, and slowly, hesitantly, he began to believe.
Jungkook reaching out and pulling Jimin into his embrace. For the first time since the divorce, Jimin felt the warmth of Jungkook's body against his, the familiar scent of him wrapping around him like a protective cocoon. It felt so right yet so painfully bittersweet.
"I've missed this," Jungkook murmured into Jimin's hair, holding him tightly as if fearing he might disappear again. "I've missed you."
Jimin cried harder, the floodgates opening as all the emotions he had bottled up poured out. "I'm sorry," he choked out, the words tumbling from his lips. "I thought letting you go was the right thing. I didn't want to ruin your life."
"You didn't ruin anything," Jungkook said, pulling back slightly to look into Jimin's tear-streaked face. "You are my life. I would choose you over anything, any day."
As they stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, Jimin felt a glimmer of hope flicker to life within him. Perhaps love could be enough. Perhaps they could find a way through the pain and build a future together, despite the challenges.
In that moment, Jimin felt the weight of his doubts lift, replaced by a determination to fight for their love-together.
