Chapter 36: Angry Queen.

Hiccup's POV.
(This chapter will be a little over the place)
(A couple hours later)

A cool breeze flows over and under us as we drift towards the nest, enjoying being off the ugly-heap-of-misery often referred to, as 'Berk'.

We're skimming the ocean with Toothless barely flapping his wings, and I lean down to dip my hand in, savouring the feeling of the cool liquid rushing over and under my fingers with a massive grin showing on my face.
We may be enjoying our freedom, but really we're not truly free, are we! We still 'work' for the queen, dragons are still enslaved, and we're both really nervous at what's to come—to be honest we don't want to die. Not today. Not when we just became free.

"Hey, bud?!" I chime out eventually. We'd been flying in a comfortable, blissful silence. He coos, looking back at me questionably.
"Do you wanna take a detour? It's not like we're supposed to go back to the nest! She doesn't own us, right?" I gesture as I speak.

"Sounds like a good  .., Hiccup." Toothless tells me, but I know there's more. "Except for, one, small detail..." and with that, he chucks something up in front of us, so I can see it, before catching it again. I groan.
We killed it, and wasting it isn't a good idea. It's just not right.
"Oh, right, the yak. That's annoying. Well I guess we could dr—hey! Over there, bud! Is that––is that Wildfire?!" I cut myself off, pointing at a dragon on a sea stack. Toothless roars loudly, and in response we get an answering roar. Within seconds Wildfire is in front of us.

"Hey Wildfire!" I greet with a grin.
"Oh, thank the dragon gods! I'm so glad you're ..!" She exclaims, relieved, as she hovers across from us.

"Yeah, we had to repair my tail." Toothless replies, gesturing to it. ".., are we glad to be off that island!"
".., is there .. I can do for you?" Wildfire asks.
"Actually, there is one thing!" I reply....

++
"YEEAAH!" I cheer as Toothless flies top speed. We perform twists and spins as we skim the ocean, basking in the glory of a free life.
"That's it bud!" I cheer as we race along the waters edge, the two of us really enjoying ourselves, as we test the limits of the delicate tail.
Oh, how great it is to be free...

Wildfire's POV
I tuck my wings into my sides to fit through the hole, making sure not to drop the kill as my instincts and memory navigate me through the dark tunnels. Finally, I reach the inside of the volcano. Scorching heat meets me immediately, and Red dust obstructs the view of the queen, as always. Every day I become more and more convinced that she lays in a lava bath down there. That's my conspiracy theory.

I fly over the dust, and drop the dead yak. "Delivery from one deadly Night Fury and his perky little Viking!" I chirp happily, still glad they're okay, before turning and flying out of the nest as fast as I can, glad to be out of there.
The only reason I stick 'round is cause of my family.

Hiccup's POV (two hours later)
"YEAH! WOO! THAT'S IT! WE GOT THIS!" I cheer loudly as Toothless and I manoeuvre around the sky, performing exhilarating moves and doing whatever the hell we want. Toothless lets out a loud and gleeful roar as we perform a barrel role, twist up to fly upside down, flip over, fire at a sea stack, and so on.

"Haha! We gonna break another speed record, bud?!" I tease him, and he smirks up at me, pressing himself to fly faster and faster. After a while we slow to a glide, seeing an island in the distance. We can't help but get a look at it. You know what they say, curiosity killed the Yak. Fine, so Stoick is actually the one that killed the Yak, but you get my point. Also, we don't wanna over work the new tail. So there's that.

"Okay bud, we can stop here, but it's day so we better be as quick as we can." I mumble as we slow down, its a bit past sunrise now and we've just reached the island. Toothless growls lowly as we hover in place, looking down at the island as we prepare for what we have decided to do.

Suddenly, Wildfire dives down past us and towards the outcast island's village.
Wildfire?!
"Wow, are you guys hard to catch!" She exclaims just as she passes us.  ".. for your tricks, or you falling off them .. times Hiccup, which by the way was pretty .. funny, I would never of caught up!"

"W-What are you doing here Wildfire?!" I explain sharply as we quickly follow her, we zip in front and cut her off, forcing her to flap in place across from us. Toothless snarls at her too, probably scolding her.

"Being a distraction! Wait till its clear!" she replies before spinning around us and firing at a house. We, angrily and reluctantly, stay under the cover of the clouds as she leads half the village on a crazy chase.

So we have no other choice but to wait until the majority of the people are out of view before diving down towards the village.  Suddenly I pull Toothless to a stop mid air.

"Bud, you hear that right?" I ask, he nods and folds his wings, hurrying through a tunnel, towards the sound of metal clinking and loud growling.

We weave through dark tunnels for about half a minute, before we emerge in a cave chamber to see three men with a Gronkle. They have him chained down and are pushing him around. We touch down behind a pillar silently, unnoticed, as we watch with narrowed eyes. Toothless growls lowly in his throat, not liking as they hit the innocent dragon.

"Plasma blast!" I whisper sharply and and Toothless does so, blowing the men far enough before they can even see us. They slam into the walls at tremendous speeds so they're all now knocked unconscious (probably with a few broken bones too).

Toothless blasts the chains attached to the floor and I jump off, pulling a chain off the Gronkle's face. I hold out my hand.

"I'm sorry...you...you had to go through that. But it's...gonna be okay now. I'm a...friend to Dragons." I manage to string a few sentences together slowly in order to comfort him in Dragonese, pleased with how well I'm coming along with the complicated Dragon-tongue.

He looks at me and presses his nose into my hand.
"Thank you. For your .. I will .. with you!" The Gronkle rumbles softly.
"Do you have a name, friend?" Toothless croons, coming closer.

"No. Should I?" the Gronkle asks, tilting his head. I have a closer look at him. He's a reddish brown colour and is just so sweet. He doesn't deserve to be here. "How about..RedViper?" I ask. (Don't ask. Just go with it -A/N)

Toothless rolls his giant eyes and huffs at my name choice. I send him a look that says 'my names are great.'
He sends a look back saying 'you named me Toothless!" And I roll my eyes at him, knowing he likes his name.
"Sure!" the Gronkle answers happily (and obviously).

"Well, I'm Toothless, the .. Deadly Night Fury, Unholy .. of .. and death itself, and this two legged awkward not-so-Viking, is Hiccup." Toothless introduces us and I facepalm at my intro.
"That's all I get, huh?" I ask him and he just smirks proudly. I smile, shaking my head in amusement, and hop back in the saddle.

"Follow us up to the clouds and we'll maybe grab some kill and get outta here!" I whisper, so we won't wake the unconscious people, and open the tail.
The three of us dissapear out and up to the skies.

"We'll be back!" I assure RedViper just before Toothless dives.

We pull towards the village and I nudge Toothless to land in the village. He coos in question.
"Shh..." I shush him as I spot the clothes shop. I sneak over there and see a really cool black yak hide cloak, and after close inspection I realise it has bear fur on the inside, designed to keep one warm. I snatch it and in its place I leave a note saying: Sorry. IOU?

I slip it on, and It goes down to my lower legs since I'm that scrawny, and has a hood as well as inside pockets. It's really warm. I also grab a nearby water flask, before putting it in a pocket in the cloak and I jump back on Toothless, wearing the cloak, and then we fly up to the clouds.

"Ya know what, why can't we just take down the queen now?!" I blurt as Wildlife joins us and we introduce her to RedViper.
"Uh...Queen?" RedViper asks as we glide side by side.
"Well...long story!" I hesitate, and so all four of us head towards the nest.

We tell Red about the Queen and what she does as we fly. He thinks that he's lucky to not be under her raft but says he'll stick around, probably on our island, because he feels like he owes us something (he doesn't).

So, soon enough, we manoeuvre through the fog, and I trust Toothless to see for me, as we swoop around sea stacks that jut out of the eery darkness. In no time at all, we emerge safely on the other side as we approach the large island.

We share a slightly worried but determined look, and move towards the volcano. Red lands on the outside, volunteering to look after the baskets. I leave the spare tail too since we don't need it. I hope the queen doesn't detect Red and take control of him. That's the last thing we need.

Luckily, as we dip through one of the many entrances, we don't get blasted by thousands of manipulated dragons. Or mauled by a giant dragon. All we feel is every single present eye on us. I shiver, unnerved.

Toothless drops down and lands on the lowest ledge, and I get ready to change the tail position if we need to escape quickly, my body tense in anticipation.

"Oh, My Queen, My .. diabolic queen, we have made it back safely!" Toothless announces in a mock tone. All noise inside ceases Immediately, with everyone wanting to listen in on the conversation. "You may celebrate now!" he adds, enjoying himself. I stifle a laugh. Now I know why he insisted I learn the word celebrate.
"I WILL SPEAK WITH YOU—WITHOUT THE HUMAN HEARING!"
The queen booms. Huh. So she knows I understand her. Damn it. Haha, I'm not leaving. Nope.

"You don't .. us. He has to hear what you have to say, or this is over!" Toothless replies, and by 'this' he means the deal—that we help in the raids in exchange for freedom.

"THEN I SHALL SAY IT REALLY ..! THE HUMAN MUST GO! IT IS .. AND OF NO IMPORTANCE. IT IS SMALL, USELESS, AND NOT WORTH BREATHING. IT ... DIE!"
I wince. Ouch, that hurt...

Toothless growls. "NOW YOU LISTEN YOU BIG UGLY ... ... .. BEAST! HE IS NOT EXPANDABLE! HE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! HE IS AMAZING, CREATIVE, SMART, .. , ... , AND AN INSPIRATION! HE BUILT ME A TAIL SO I COULD FLY AGAIN! HE .. ME HEAL! HE .. MY TRUST! SAVED ME FROM YOU! IF ANYONE .. DIE, IT IS YOU!"

At this a big roar comes from the depths. "THEN YOU .. DIE AS WELL!"

Toothless roars and stomps his feet. "ALRIGHT ..., TRY ME!" I set a hand on his head, trying to remind him to lot loose himself to anger. He needs a clear mind.
A deafening roar shakes the volcano, and it stirs up all the dragons that are watching, as they rush to get out. The first thing that appears is the dragons snout, as it's humongous nostrils sniff us out.
Well I guess this is it, then. We fight.

"Come get us!" I roar as the head fully emerges, it's eyes locked on us. Toothless snarls, and I click open the prosthetic tail. We dash out of the nest, dodging terrified dragons as they hurry to be free. The queen has lost her grip on them, and now they're no longer captive.

We dart out of a exit I've never noticed in the cluster of dragons, and fly up to the clouds. We hover high, and turn to watch what happens. Firstly, is the sight of the dragon minions as they aim to be free. A whole swarm of colours, flame, spines, claws, and hopeful eyes as they aim to be free. Free of her enslavement.

Then, it's silent.
"Is that it?!" I hear, and then my gaze snaps down to the ground as I hear cheering. Right down on the rocky beach are Vikings. And not just any Vikings. The Vikings of Berk.
Oh no no no! Can't they ever stay OUT of my life?!
"Oh, perfect." I mumble sarcastically. "Well, At least in all the chaos they haven't seen us. It's either that or they're blinder than I remember."

How did they even get here?!
Suddenly, though, all the cheering stops, as I hear one voice rise above it all.
"THIS ISN'T OVER! FORM YOUR RANKS! HOLD TOGETHER!"
Stoick. Even thinking his name gives me rage.

And then, a deep rumbling starts. At first you'd think it was an earthquake, like my dad's stomach when he's hungry, but then it gets louder and more intense. I snap my head to the volcano, as I witness it crumbling. Out comes a leg, a body, and a head.

She's out.
I've never seen her like this before. Only her head. Man, she's even larger than I imagined! Toothless growls from under me, eyes glaring at the shape of the queen. I set a comforting hand on his head as we hang back in the clouds.
"Not yet, bud. Not yet..." I mumble, pulling my hood over my head.

"Get clear!" Stoick shouts at his people, running from one of the entrances. Everyone does, shocked at what they are seeing.

"Hiccup.." Toothless trails off as the dragon roars ferociously, searching with her beady eyes for us.
"I know bud, I know. We have to save them." I finish with a sigh as I roll my eyes. "Vikings." I scoff. He chortles a laugh at my response.

I look down to see the Vikings firing catapults at the Red Death. They bounce off the dragon like pebbles. When this happens, Vikings yell to get to the ships, and I hope they go, but instead the Red Death hears there plans and just turns and fires at the ships. I pale.
Oh, no!

Okay so listen very carefully. This is rewinding it back, to the morning after the announcement Stoick made. (Basically like twelve hours earlier from now?)

Astrid's POV.

"Right! When we leave I need you all to stay and look after the place, dig a new well, do a bit of fishing, fix some huts, control things." Stoick tells us teens, having come up to us as we all were helping to rebuild a hut.

"What?!" Snotlout shouts, almost dropping his hammer.
"No.way!" Randi yells from the doorway.
"pfft, And miss all the destruction?!" Tuff shouts, hanging upside down from a beam with a suspicious looking fish in his hands.
"Ha! Never!" Ruff adds from her position on the roof.
"Okay...." Fishlegs whispers. Coward.

I drop down from the roof and land with a thud in front of Stoick, glaring with determination.
"Chief, I'm gonna be Berk's best warrior! You can't deny that! We NEED to come, sir! And with all due respect, but you need us!" I protest, gesturing wildly the whole way through and punching a fist to my palm on the first sentence.
I am NOT missing out on this! I am a future killer and I need to do this!

"Nonsense. You're only kids! I'm not risking your lives." He responds but I shake my head.
"You've gotta let us do this! We can't sit back and miss an opportunity like this! The end of the dragons! I have a family name to restore! A reputation to hold! I'm sorry, but I have to come! And if you don't let me come, you know I'll find a way to come myself!"

"...ugh! Fine, you can come! but you have to stay close to the others! And if your disobeying any orders you'll be on the first ship home!" Stoick gives in but is very stern. "Understand?!"

"Understood Chief. Now if you'd excuse me, I have to go get my axe sharpened!" I say, picking up my axe and walking away from everyone and towards the forge.

***+++++***

"We're upping the preparations. We leave in an hour!" A viking came running through the village shouted. I quickly run to the forge and collect my axe from Gobber, before going to the house and meeting up with mum.

"Mum...you stay here with my sister! I'm going with dad!" I tell her as I grab some bread off the counter.

"Hmm. Well, good luck dear. And just please be careful!" She answers as I leave for the docks with my axe. I smile at her reassuringly before I hurry off.

"We leave in half an hour!" Stoick shouts as he comes down the path to the docks, behind him the chained Nadder is being pushed. I hurry towards the docks.

(Small time skip from this point)
We've been at sea for...like, maybe two and a half hours. It's been quite a trip so far.

"Thank Gods we're able to come!" Randi mutters, we're all hanging in a corner, up on deck. The twins are dangling upside down from a beam, Snotlout is leaning against the pole that is connected to that beam, Fishlegs is sitting on a crate reading a book on Useful Herbs For Treatment and I'm sitting on the edge of the ship looking at the calm water. Randi is sitting cross legged on a wooden crate.

"I mean, wow. It's been three hundred years and finally we get the chance! We get to defeat the nest!" I exclaim, nervous for the battle to come.

"This stupid war will be over! We can focus our attention on the more important things!" Fishlegs cheers.

"Yeah, like marriage. Huh, Astrid! Ya feeling me?" Snotlout flirts.
DON'T SAY THE M WORD NEAR ME! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME!
"Shut it or I'll do it for you!" I threaten in fury, showing my clenched fist.
"Oh, I'd like to see that!" Tuff comments from hanging upside down.

"What? I would!" He adds, seeing our questionable looks. I roll my eyes.
I'm happy to give you a close up experience if you like.

"Hey, Astrid?"
I huff and roll my eyes. "WHAT?!" I answer Tuffnut sharply.
"Where do you think Hiccup is?" he asks, ignoring my not so subtle clue that I'm not in the mood. I give him a puzzled look.
"Where's this coming from?" I ask.

"I, er, I don't know. I just thought..like where would he be?"
"He's probably dead by now, Tuff." Snotlout chimes in with a scoff. Tuff and Ruff share a look.
"But..if he's not been murdered by the dragon..do you think he would come back?" Ruff speaks up now.
"What, to Berk?" I ask and they nod.
"I mean, you guys were there, right? You heard him. He banished himself. Called us out, o-on how we treated him. If he IS still alive, which is a longshot, Why would he come back? Why come back to place he hates more than anything?" I add. The twins nod.

"Right. Makes sense." Tuff mumbles.
They actually understand! Wow, that's weird.

A huge wave rocks the boat. "Steady! Tie all loose cargo down!" Stoick shouts from the front of the ship as he watches the horizon.

I grab nearby rope and secure the crate full of fish that I'm sitting near, down to the ship. I chuck everyone some rope and I grab some more for myself, tying a random crate to the side.

I hear some struggling sounds and I turn to see the twins are tied upside down to the pole, but Snotlout is in the far corner struggling to tie a basket down so he couldn't of done it. I raise an eyebrow at the twins. Ruff shrugs while Tuff speaks.

"Eh.....sorry?" he offers. I groan and roll my eyes, lifting my axe up off the floor.
"Now, hold. Still!" I instruct sternly.
"Wait, Astrid! what are you--" He's cut off by my axe swinging, breaking the ropes but leaving the twins untouched.

They drop down.
"So...are ya gonna whip us up some more rope or......" Tuff asks.

"OR, you two can bring them boxes safely bellow deck!" Randi declares and I nod, agreeing.
I sit back down and stare out in the horizon, waiting for the battle to come.
