Chapter 25: Learning the Language.

Four days later.

Hiccup's POV.

So, everyday we've been flying to the nest to check up on the dragons, and see if there's any way we can learn knowledge from the queen. So far, no good. Well, we HAVE noticed that everyday, the Queen let's small groups of dragons only at a time go and feed themselves and only one group a day, for some odd reason. I think because the Queen has gotten stricter after losing Toothless as a minion. So the majority of the dragons starve, being forced to feed the Queen and not themselves. Oh, and Toothless has been teaching me more of his language, so I can almost string together an entire sentence! It's amazing!

But, the thing is that it doesn't just include grows, snarls, purrs and things like that. No, Dragonese also involves body gestures and some of them are pretty hard to master. Why would I need to move my heard to the left and not the right? Does it seriously mean that much?

Currently we're on our little island, sitting in a small cave we discovered, with a small campfire burning in front of us, and a Terrible Terror curled up on my lap.

"Alright. How do you say Dragon?" I ask.

Toothless says it, it's a sort of purr and a grumble in one. I try to repeat. He shakes his head, saying I didn't get it.

I try again. "Dragon." I say. Toothless nods and I smile.

"Great. " I say. "So, I...can ride a...peaceful dragon! " I say, stringing together a sentence slowly.

"Yes.....you can.... I...... fish?" Toothless says, I understand some of it but the rest is just him cooing or crooning to me, there was even a screech in there!

I mange to reach into the basket without disturbing the orange terror in my lap and give him three salmon, and they were left over because we went fishing this morning. "You know you don't have to ask, bud!" I exclaim.

Suddenly Toothless sticks his head up and I see his ear lobes vibrate, moving up and down.
Oh no.
I look to Toothless, concerned, after it dies down.

".. .. ... call ... .. for raid." Toothless says.
"Let's go tag along, then!" I exclaim and Toothless nods. I gently set the terror down without disturbing his rest and stand up. "I wonder if we will be raiding Berk. " I mumble to Toothless as I put the basket in the far corner of our cave.

Toothless comes to my side and I climb into the saddle, gripping the bars.
First raid, here we come!

We launch up into the air, just in time to see a flock of dragons flying from the nests direction. We pick up the pace and catch up to them in a matter of seconds.

We fly in formation, with us at the front, a blue Zipppleback to our right, and a sunset orange and teal Nadder is to our left.

It's becoming night, so by the time we get to wherever we're heading, the moon should be apexing.

"Hey bud, how do you say Attack? Ya know, I just think it might be useful." I say after a minute of silence.

He looks back at me and demonstrates. Apparently, I get it on the second try. I'm getting good at this! It's like the more I learn, the easier it gets!

"Alright. How about Eel!" I say and the Nadder next to us squawks in terror.
"Oops, sorry. He's teaching me your language. " I explain sheepishly. The Nadder tilts her head.

"You .... a .... .....but you hear me?" The Nadder questions.
Huh. She appears to not be in a trance. WAIT, that means she's here by WILL?!
"little. " I say, making a sort of pinching potion with my hand.

Toothless pronounces the word and I repeat it.
"Eel." I say, he nods.

"See, this isn't so bad, it's good to pass time!" I say, "How about friend?"
Toothless demonstrates.

Toothless POV.
"friend." I say.
"Fried." Hiccup guesses, me and the Nadder shake our heads. The Nadder has taken in interest, it seems. Well I would too if I was in her position.
"Friend." Hiccup says and the Nadder nods.

"Hey, so why aren't you under control?" Hiccup asks the Nadder. "If you don't mind me asking."

"she has my kin. " She explains to me. "Otherwise I'd be so far away from here with my mate."

"Her... Family." I explain simpler to Hiccup, we learnt that word early this morning. Thank god or I'd just be roaring at him!

"Oh, I'm sorry!" Hiccup apologizes.

"That's fine..." the Nadder nods.

"So, you understand him, huh?" I say.
"Yeah, It's not a hard language to understand. " she replies.

"Wish I could tell him the same about Dragonese." I say and we both laugh. Hiccup looks at us in confusion and I smirk.

"Hey bud, how do I say land?" Hiccup asks about a minute later.

"Land." I say and Hiccup repeats it correctly. I give him a gummy smile.

"Great! How about Ahead?" He suggests
"Ahead." Me and The Nadder say.

"Ahead." Hiccup says.
"Hey, he's pretty good!" The Nadder exclaims as I smile at Hiccup.
"Yeah, won't be long and he will be speaking exactly like one of us. He can be..like, our translation Viking." I chuckle.
"Exactly!"

"Hey, you guys talking about me?" Hiccup teases.
"Noooo." I lie.
"Okay, I believe you. " Hiccup says sarcastically.
