I've Been Tagged!

All right, so since somebody *cough autumn_sunfire cough* tagged me, y'all get to hear my answers to a bunch of random questions!  Yay! (maybe?)

How would you describe this past year in one sentence?

2016?  Personally: Filled with change.  Generally: Eh, could have been worse. (let's stay positive, people!)

Has your writing improved a lot in the past year?

I would say so.  I went from random, sporadic bits and pieces of writing to seriously starting my first full-length novel.  Since then, I've been (attempting) to put the writing knowledge that I'd only known intellectually into practice.  It's been fun!

How many books have you started in the past year and what are they?

Well, technically speaking, I wrote the first part of Magic's Minister in 2015.  But I seriously started writing it in 2016.  It's more than enough for me at the moment.  I don't think I could handle another one at the same time.

How many books have you completed in the last year?

None! But hopefully one by the end of 2017. :)

How many books are in your library right now?

Uh, 136, I think?  If it's wrong, I'm not recounting!  You can't make me!

Any major reading benchmark you reached this year and what are they?

I typically avoid non-fiction like the plague but I actual read way more than usual.  Mostly books about writing. ;)

What is your favorite fiction book that you have read this year, or favorites?

Guards, Guards by Terry Pratchett, hands down.

What is a film this year that has inspired you writing-wise?

A film?  This is going to sound weird, but The Lego Batman Movie.  Not so much with ideas or plot lines but just storytelling in general.  I was really impressed with Batman's character arch.  It was straightforward but still touching.  We've seen the "loner comes to accept help/friends" storyline before but the way they pulled it off was SO enjoyable and really made me root for Batman to change and become a better person.  I'm a big fan of character-driven stories (in case you couldn't tell from my writing, hehe) and the writers pulled it off amazingly well.  I actually saw several similarities with Sedgewick's character arch.  Plus, over half the soundtrack is now part of my mental list of inspirational writing songs.  (Anyone want to take a guess which one is pretty much Young Healer Feyla in a nutshell?)

Who are some authors that have influenced your writing this year on Wattpad or in real life?

Technically, these answers are for 2016/2017.  Hmm, probably Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.  Even before I read Guards, Guards, the snippets of Pratchett's writing I'd seen helped inspire the humor I've tried to insert in my writing (although I'm nowhere near as clever as he was).  Neil Gaiman really pushed me to try to be more creative with my descriptions, since I found his so interesting (when I usually skim over those).

What is your favorite chapter, paragraph or excerpt that you have written this year?

Nononononononono!  Don't make me pick!

...

*sigh*  Fine.  If I'm being forced, I'll probably go with this segment from Chapter 29.  I don't know if it's my favorite but I liked the undercurrent of the relationship between Fenroy and Eleyna.  The feeling that they know each other really well and that Eleyna puts a lot of trust and respect in her husband even though she's technically higher ranked than him.

*Warning: Possible spoilers.*

"I do not want you to 'try'," the queen cut in, a dangerous iciness to her voice.

The King Consort reached across his chair to her own and placed a hand on her arm. She slowly turned toward him, and Zedeya loosened with relief. Tyrinn stared at them expectantly, his nostrils flaring as if he was a wolf smelling for a meal he'd long craved. The king met his queen's eyes and silent words seemed to pass between them. Finally, the queen nodded once, curtly. She turned away and moved her hand as if gesturing for him to proceed with something they had decided.

King Fenroy stood from his chair, his towering form now even more obvious. With the queen looking away, Zedeya found it easy to forget the eerie aura of the woman in the presence of the more physical intimidation of her husband. She swallowed as he took one long step closer to Tyrinn.

Any new plot ideas or projects we should look forward to in the near future?

Yes!  Once I finish Magic's Minister, I'm hoping to post a book of one-shots and short stories about Sedgewick, Feyla, and some other secondary characters.  This will help bridge the gap to my next full-length project which will be...

Actually, I'm still kinda deciding on that.  Wanna help?

1. A direct sequel to Magic's Minister which is tentatively titled Magic's Memories.  You know how Feyla's an ex-Battle Healer?  Well, get ready to meet a whole guild of them!  And an evil wizard! (or is he?...)

2. A prequel to Magic's Minister.  The tentative title is Magic's Maker.  Goes into how Feyla and Sedgewick met but mostly focuses on Eleyna and Fenroy.  Remember all those vague references to Eleyna being able to harness Pure Magic?  Well, here's the explanation!

3. A (mostly?) unconnected project which currently just goes by the name Nymph.  It's a magical road trip romance set in the same world.  And that's all I'm going to say about it.

What are you hoping to improve on next year for writing?

Writing.  Faster.  That would be fantastic.  Other than that, worldbuilding and making my dialogue "pop".

Who is your favorite character you created last year?

Most of my characters existed way before last year but for those who didn't, it's probably a toss-up between Mydel and Hobrin.  Mydel because he's just so squeaky-new and eager to please (and is adorable with his too-big hat).  He tries so hard but is just a bit too new to the whole adult thing.  The last time he asked Feyla out, anyone?  *snickers*

And Hobrin just came out of nowhere waving his backstory in my face which has NEVER happened before.  Usually, I have to slowly woo/torture the backstory out of my characters.  A process that has taken years.  *glares at Sedgewick*

Whew.  That was fun!  Thanks to Verity for the tag!
