Cousins

"Sorry, I am late for dinner." Jen hurriedly took a seat at the dinner table. Her cousins prepared a celebratory dinner for her.

"What kept you?" Denise hugged her. "Where is your camera?"

"The police have it. Let's talk about it later."

"Hey, girls!" Luther greeted, sitting at the table.

"Tell us about your new job," Denise filled her plate with food.

"I'm taking pictures for the online magazine, Trails for Us."

"Oh, good for you," Luther replied, his mouth full of food.

Chatter, mixed with laughter, filled the room as they ate. After dinner, Denise helped Jen clear the table.

"You've been acting weird all night," Denise remarked.

"Earlier, I took pictures on the trail behind my house for the magazine, " Jen's voice cracked as she explained.

"You're shaking. Let me get you some water."

"Denise!" Jen sobbed.

Dropping the cup of water on the floor, she rushed to Jen. Wondering what upset her, Denise stroked her cousin's back.

"I captured something on my video," Jen quivered.  "A murder!"

"You sure?"

"I took the video to the police station. Searching the video, they were able to locate the body on the trail."

"What are they going to do?"

"The video is a little grainy. The are questioning my neighbors, hoping someone saw something. The police sent me home to rest."

A dark figure appeared suddenly in the kitchen doorway, interrupting their intense conversation.

"I had to use the bathroom," Luther explained, seeing Jen jump.

"Get some sleep. We are going to go; I'll return in the morning to help clean up." Denise instructed before leaving.

Following her cousin's instructions, Jen left the dinner mess. She fell asleep on her pillow covered couch. Only to be awakened by a sound at her front door. Walking through the dark house, Jen looked out the peephole. Her heart raced, seeing a masked man dressed in black standing at her door.

She quickly dialed nine one one giving her information about the man walking back forth between her front door and kitchen window trying to get in.

Hearing footsteps on her stairs, Jen darted out her front door, a second masked figure stood on her doorstep. Screaming, she dropped her phone and ran back inside. Trying to avoid the second intruder, she entered the kitchen, slipping on the spilled water.

"All this because you can't do anything right. Pick her up!"

The masked figures stood over her, staring.

"Now what are we going to do?"

"Luther?"

"Dispose of her on the trail. Use the back door."

Jen froze. "Why?"

"You were supposed to be at an appointment, not on the trail. Luther killed our buyer after our deal went bad."

Sirens wailed, announcing the approaching police.

"Go, cousin; I will pretend to be Jen and get rid of the police." Removing her mask, Denise headed to meet the arriving police cars.

Luther tightened his grip on their wiggling picture-taking cousin. Covering Jen's mouth, he carried her to the trail behind her house.
