Sitting on the bench, a brown trench coat unbuttoned showing off the black V-neck beneath it and a chain with a large key hugging his chest, Chance slumped in his seat and three his head back in exhaustion. He hasn't visited the hospital yesterday or the day before. The urge to go there grew every second but somehow he managed to stay put. He thought he absconded Blue, left him alone once again, but there wasn't a second that went by without him thinking that the one that he loved would soon pass away, and he wasn't ready to witness it with his own eyes after he nearly bled to death in his arms.
Lifting his leg, his fresh out of the closet, ebony jeans stretched, squeezing at his lower half a little as he positions his right leg over his left, his cold, long fingers gripping the bench beneath him. He had been waiting for almost an hour for the idiot he adapted as his friend.
Chance reminisced on the day he first met him. He looked to be around the same age as Chance, maybe a little older. His curly, brown hair fell over his forehead, his rosy red lips rounded around his pen that he placed in his mouth. His features and mocha complexion gave off that he was Mexican. He was thinking deeply about something until a doctor interrupted him by assigning him to the room Blue was in. At first, Chance didn't like him. He would often touch Blue's hair, staring at him weirdly. Chance assumed that he was a pervert, but after confronting him, he was consumed with guilt. The reason he was touching Blue's hair was that he had a sister who looked exactly like Blue and had dyed her hair the same color. He knew it was weird but he couldn't help himself. Blue reminded him so much of his beloved sister.
Where was she now?
The place Chance assumed Blue would end up soon.
Chance felt bad for even thinking of such a thing, but with the way things were going, he had to prepare himself before it actually came.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, man." A voice rang from behind Chance before a bod appeared in front of him. Looking up, Chance shook his head and shrugged signaling that it was nothing.
Matthew sat down next to him and handed him a cup with what looked like coffee, specifically, a latte. "Griffin held me back for a while. Patient three managed to remove the needle from her hand and ended up passing out in the bathroom." Matthew explained with a sigh as he lowered his cup. The chilly air engulfed his body causing him to shiver due to the lack of clothes. He had forgotten his jacket in the hospital because he was in a rush to find Chance before he left.
"Dammit, I forgot my jacket, " he mumbled underneath his breath then proceeded to take a sip from his cup. Chance eyed him before removing his coat, handing it to Matthew. "Just give it back when we meet again." Chance told him, looking away. His face held no sort of emotions and his eyes weren't as wide and bright as before. Everyone who knew him knew the reason behind it.
"Are you sure?" Matthew asked, biting the inside of his cheek. He glanced at Chance then at the coat, hesitant to put it on. "Just put it on, dammit." Chance said lowly. He didn't mean to come off harsh, but it was too late since he couldn't take his words back and Matthew frowned at him.
There was an awkward silence between them whilst Matthew put on Chance's coat, his latte next to his foot. Soaring through the park, Matthew hunted someone to get his attention away from the tense mate beside him. The day wasn't supposed to go like this, they were supposed to have a nice conversation with laughs and storytelling. Matthew began to wonder if it was because of his late coming Chance was upset. He probably left him alone for too long allowing his mind to wander to things he knew would devastate the lad.
"How is she?" Chance asked suddenly, sitting up a little. He placed the cup between his plumped lips and gulped down the almost bitter liquid. He loved the bitter taste of the coffee. It reminded him of the bitterness in his life, the bitterness he consumed as a little child.
"How is who?" Matthew asked, finally turning back to Chance. Irritation lingered in Chance's eyes before he replied, "Meredith, patient three."
Realization flashed in Matthew's eyes before he replied to Chance's previous question, "She's fine now. I had to make sure she fell back asleep before I left."
Meredith was a twelve-year-old girl with asthma and pneumonia who entered the hospital the same night as Chance. Matthew was assigned to her as well so often when he would go to her, Chance would visit her and make sure she had company. Her parents were always at work and her older brother was away for college. Though her parents worked every day, the little time they had, they would visit her. The first night they found Chance there, they were stunned to see that a complete stranger took interest in their little daughter and helped her with everything whilst they were gone. They thought he was her doctor but given that he was in his home clothes, they second-guessed it.
Chance was getting ready to say something, but a phone going off cut him short. Matthew lifted a finger and answered the call. "Yello." He greeted and placed his cup to his lips.
There was a pause before he asked, "Who?" The voice on the other end sounded familiar, but Chance couldn't put his finger on who it was. Suddenly, Matthew's face fell and he stood up, dropping his coffee causing it to splatter everywhere, especially on his shoes. Groaning, Matthew backed away from the mess as Chance stared at him with little amusement in his eyes.
"Oh, thank God! Thank you, Lucy!" Matthew ended the call and shoved his phone back in his pocket. Chance raised an eyebrow and swallowed another gulp of the liquid in his cup. "You're not getting from mine, dude." He exclaimed and chuckled, shutting his eyes.
"Shut up!" Matthew grabbed Chance's cup and dropped it in the bin next to them. "Hey!" Chance stood up, pissed at what Matthew had done.
Matthew rolled his eyes before saying, "He's awake." Chance, not realizing what Matthew had just said, walked towards the bin and stared at his cup with a frown. "Who is?" He asked subconsciously. Matthew groaned loudly before grabbing hold of Chance's shoulders finally catching his attention.
"Lucky."
