S3, Chapter 3: Setting Up For Prom
Was writing most of this in gym class at school. Teachers didn't give a shit on what we were doing so I decided, I'll continue this chapter and hopefully get it done and voila. The next chapter may also be posted this week on Saturday or Sunday as usual. Hope you all enjoy this chapter.
---
It was dawn, the school day now over. Shizuka Hiratsuka could be seen in her own area in the faculty room where she held her guidance counselor sessions.
Currently smoking a cigarette, she glanced down at her hand. It was the key to the clubroom of the Service Club, remembering Y/N's voice as he came by to get it once.
Before...
Hiratsuka: Oh. Well, Yukinoshita already came and got the key earlier...why don't you try giving her a call?
Y/N: While we may be childhood friends, contact information is something we don't have.
Hiratsuka: Talk about disappointment. And Yuigahama doesn't have it either?
Y/N: (scratches cheek) Uh, well...never really thought about it. (turns to room) Everyone seems to be busy.
Hiratsuka: I'm busy, too, you know. I really am!
Y/N: (raised eyebrows) And what's that? Thinking of ways to seduce my brother?
Hiratsuka: H-Huh!? Wh-What are you talking about!?
Y/N: Sensei, Nii-san may not see it, but I do. If you want to go after him, go ahead. If it gets him a wife.
Hiratsuka: W-Well, I'm on my break right now, okay? A short one. Got it?
Y/N: Right...well, I'm going to head back.
Hiratsuka: Yes, please do that. Oh, and L/N?
Y/N: Hmm?
Hiratsuka: (chuckles) ...Nothing. Here, catch.
The young teacher tosses a MAXX coffee can, Y/N surprised by it. Looking back to the teacher, she simply winked.
Hiratsuka: Don't tell anyone I was in here slacking off.
Y/N: (sighs and grins) Sure.
Present
As she begins to walk out of the faculty room, something caught her eye. In a box was some sort of book, a part of the label saying "Second Stars."
Hiratsuka: A bird doesn't mess up it's own nest before it leaves. Or so they say...but maybe I'm just trying too hard.
Next Day
It was the next day and everyone was standing, looking at a board. The title said "Successful Candidates."
Inside class 2-F, Y/N was sitting near Saki as usual, the only person he talked to. Hachiman was over by his own desk, yawning as he could hear the conversations of the class.
Tobe: Dudes, we're gonna be third years in high school! So like, we're totally gonna be swamped with stuff!
As Hachiman yawned, he heard footsteps and a voice coming towards him.
???: Hachiman, you look sleepy.
He looked over to see it was the Tennis captain, Saika Totsuka. The boy tilted his head in a cutely manner, inciting a small blush to his face.
Saika: You seem tired a lot lately, are you okay?
Hachiman: (smirks) I'm fine, I'm fine. I just stayed up a few nights in a row to play games.
Saika: I see. But that's not good for your health! Stick to one hour of gaming per day! Besides... (whispers) Yuigahama is going to get mad at you.
Hachiman: W-Well, our club isn't meeting so I've got the time now.
Saika: Oh, your club's on a break now.
Hachiman: Just for the time being. I have nothing else to do.
Saika: Oh.
Hachiman: (sigh of relief) ...Totsuka.
Saika: Hmm?
Hachiman: ...Are you free any time soon?
Saika: Eh? Sorry! I have club activities on the weekdays...oh, but in the evening, I have tennis school and stuff...um, but on our next break...there's a practice game.
Hachiman: Oh, we can just hang out some other time then. Seriously.
The grey-haired boy shyly nods, Hachiman having a dumb look on his face as a slight blush began to surface. He soon stops as he receives a message from his sister. As he was about to check, he heard a disturbance, looking up to see Saki dragging Y/N around.
Although his face was of irritation, it softened up as he let go of Saki's hand, running along side her.
Tobe: What, what!? Somethin' happen!? Wanna follow her? Are we goin', too!?
Soon, Hachiman dashes out of the room as well, Totsuka giving chase as he was confused. Outside, Hachiman met up with his sister, who had given him the brightest smile.
Komachi: Onii-chan, I passed.
Hachiman was exhausted from running, panting heavily. Saika gained a happy smile as he was happy of hearing the news.
Hachiman: Oh, you did? Good, that's great...I'm really glad.
Komachi: (tearing up) Yeah, this is great. It truly is...it's really, really great. I'm so glad. Onii-chan...Onii-chan, this is so great...
The younger Hikigaya envelops Hachiman into a hug. The older sibling simply smiled and stroked his sister's hair, proud of what she'd done. The three's attention were then drawn to the Kawasaki siblings and the youngest L/N.
Saki: Taishi!
Taishi: Nee-san! Nii-san! I did it!
The younger sibling of Saki presented the packet to her, Saki taking it slowly as she held it up in the air. Y/N only grinned and pat Taishi's back, putting him in a headlock as he ruffles his hair. Saki began to tear up as she watched the interaction between Y/N and her younger brother, Taishi begging for Y/N to stop, Y/N's grin only growing.
Y/N then lets Taishi go, Taishi running over to Komachi and Hachiman. Y/N stood next to a teary-eyed Saki, who continued to watch Taishi.
Y/N: He really made it.
Saki: Yeah...he did.
Y/N: Now then, what's on the agenda for today? Once Nee-san finds out, she'll want to throw a huge party.
Saki: (sigh) Yeah.
Y/N: Might as well call her up and have her get ingredients. She doesn't go to school today or tomorrow. She's on break.
Soon, Yui could be seen running up to the Hikigaya siblings.
Yui: Komachi-chan!
Komachi: Y-Yu-Yu-Yui-san!
The younger Hikigaya bursted into tears as she ran towards the orange haired girl, crying in her arms as Yui smiled.
Hachiman: (thoughts) What? Is she crying harder than when she told me? Am I imagining this?
Yui: (strokes Komachi's hair) Congratulations...good for you. You worked really hard for this. I'm so happy for you, too! You've gotta tell Yukinon!
Komachi: Yeah.
Y/N: (pats Hachiman's back) That's rough buddy.
Hachiman grunted before he grinned, pulling out his phone. He had a prepped message towards his mother, it saying, "No time for pleasantries, Mom. The sakura has bloomed." He then pressed the send button, the message instantly sent towards his mother.
Timeskip
Y/N: So? Why did you drag me out here, too?
Both Hachiman and Y/N were sitting with Iroha, sitting by the steps that were near the soccer field.
Iroha: Senpais... (tugs on Hachiman's sleeve)
The black haired boy was getting uncomfortable, shifting awkwardly as Iroha had tugged on his sleeve.
Iroha: Will you two help me out?
Hachiman: (gulps) Nope, I'm not even a fan of the prom idea in the first place.
Y/N: Sure, just one question...why did you ask in that tone of voice?
Iroha: It makes me look cute. (to Hachiman) You say that, but I can tell you're overjoyed by the fact that I'm relying on you right now.
Y/N: You rely on both of us. Well, you rely on him more than me, anyway.
Hachiman: Is that how this face looks?
Iroha: Do you want me to answer that truthfully?
Hachiman: Huh, what? That's kinda scary, stop looking so serious. (grunts) I mean, isn't Yukinoshita helping you out? Is there something wrong?
Iroha: Well, to be honest, everything has been going really smoothly. So smoothly that it makes me question why Yukino-senpai isn't the student council president.
Y/N: Well, that one was more of Hikigaya's idea.
Hachiman: Well, things can go wrong even if they seem smooth.
Iroha: Huh? What?
Hachiman: Urk...! Here's some unsolicited advice, but be careful not to rely on Yukinoshita too much.
Iroha: That's what I've been doing...
Y/N: She has little to no stamina, so it's ridiculous. But, she sure a hell is stubborn and hates giving up. She pushes herself too far sometimes.
Iroha: I see. I've been thinking for a long time that you're...
Y/N: That I'm what?
Iroha: (smug grin) Overprotective.
Y/N: ...Huh?
Hachiman: I've seen your finger twitch when someone mentions Yukinoshita.
Y/N: ...I have no idea what you two are talking about.
Iroha: Okay then, what would you call it? The big brother-type?
Y/N: Hmm...I don't...think so.
Iroha: (points to Hachiman) Are you attracted to younger women like senpai here?
Y/N: What!? No!
Iroha: I wonder...what about older women?
Y/N: Out of the...there is nothing to wonder about, and having an older sister doesn't make me act like that. You're saying as if I have an older sister fetish.
Hachiman: You could call it a habit.
Y/N: Like you have a habit for younger girls? Yeah, no.
Iroha: I think you should break that habit.
Y/N: Never had one to begin with.
Hachiman: (unsure) Huh? Okay...
Iroha: There isn't a girl alive that's happy to be treated like a younger sister.
Y/N: (thoughts) I treat Keika like she's my younger sister. That kawaii factor she has...it's something to be feared.
Hachiman: O-Okay.
Iroha: Senpais, wouldn't you hate being told that you're like an older brother?
Y/N: I wouldn't know what an older brother feels like...wait...yeah, I do. And nope. Haven't told me they hate it so far.
Hachiman: Since I'm actually an older brother, I don't exactly hate the thought...
Iroha: Oh...guys do feel that way, don't they...? Well, then...
Hachiman and Y/N: Hmm?
Iroha: (clears throat and giggles awkwardly) You two are kind of like dads, huh? Uh, I mean, it's like...I'm always grateful for your help...and stuff...ya know?
Hachiman: (thoughts) Hachiman suffered a blow from hearing those words.
Y/N: I'm...a dad...?
Hachiman: That inflicted some serious damage. I feel like I've been blatantly mislabeled.
Y/N: I'm just confused.
Iroha: That's how it feels! For the most part, the guys say "You're like a little sister" have a high probability of using the expression "I can't think of you as a little sister anymore" to hit on her. All of that is part of a set, you know?
Hachiman: Wow, that hurts. You can't be serious...a little sister is a sacred and inviolable sanctuary.
Y/N: I think we can add "creep" to the list of titles you hold under "siscon."
Hachiman: Again, not a siscon.
Y/N: Your way of adoring Komachi-san begs to differ.
Hachiman: Well, the men of the world need to reconsider the meaning of "little sister" and repent. This is unforgivable.
Y/N: Oh, is that so?
Iroha: Well, that wasn't the reaction I expected...but anyways! From here on out, put more thought into it when you say things like "you're like a little sister" to girls... (gasps and looks to Hachiman) Were you going to hit on me by saying "I can't think of you as a sister anymore" some time in the future? At this point in time, it's possible for me to feel excited about this so please try again when you get another chance. I'm sorry.
Hachiman: Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. I won't say it.
Iroha: What is up with that attitude!? You weren't listening to me at all, were you!? Whatever, I'm done. In any case, please help me out with this.
Y/N: Sure, whatever. Just call me up whenever. Nee-san has been so gungho about this ordeal that she's even calling Sakisaki to make me a new suit.
Hachiman: Huh? What? No, I told you...
The foxy student council president only got close to Hachiman's face, her signature grin on as Hachiman reels his face back.
Iroha: After all, I'm not your little sister.
She winked, causing Hachiman to gasp a little and lean back. She then begins to walk off, acting all giddy.
Iroha: I'll be waiting for you in the student council room after school!
She gave a wave, Y/N only sighing in response before he gets a message from Saki, stating she'll need his measurements. He let out an annoyed sigh as laid down on the concrete floor, Hachiman staring at him before he resumed staring at the empty soccer field in front of him.
Hours had then passed, the school bell ringing and signaling students that it was time to head home. Y/N and Hachiman were making their way to the student council room. The two open the door, startling some of the people inside, it being Yui and Yukino.
Yui: Ah, Hikky? L/N-san?
Yukino: Hikigaya-kun...Y/N...
Y/N: (monotone) Osu.
Hachiman: Hey. Isshiki called us here...I guess we came to help.
Y/N: Well, I didn't object to helping. I'm just worried about when the day actually comes. Nee-san is terrifying me.
The two girls look to Iroha, who was busy making refreshments. Yukino gained an apologetic look.
Yukino: I see...I'm sorry.
Hachiman: (thoughts) Hey now, Irohas...you gotta report, contact, and, consult!
Looking to the board, it was already filled with planned ideas. Thinking of holding the prom at the front of the gym, they planned to have a live rock band, rental services, and more.
Yukino: We need some manpower today, so you two would honestly be a big help. Thank you.
Y/N: Again, didn't object to helping. This guy on the other hand...
Hachiman: Well, I wasn't particularly busy, so it's fine.
Y/N: (raised eyebrows) Weren't you trying to wiggle yourself out of the situation earlier?
Hachiman: Shut up.
Small Timeskip
Hachiman: Announce the event?
Y/N: You guys already announced that you're holding a prom? How big was the reaction?
Hachiman: I didn't know.
Iroha: Huh? Why not?
Y/N: It's not like you guys posted it around the school anywhere. Then again, I rarely check the announcement board up near the front office.
Hachiman: Yeah. I mean, there's nothing saying that anywhere. (looks to Yui) Right?
Yui: Huh? (sheepish smile) I knew.
Hachiman: Huh? Why? Are you bullying me?
Yui: I'm not bullying you! I mean, I'm wondering why you don't know...oh, I get it!
She then took her phone, Yui going to show him before Iroha got his attention.
Iroha: Here, this is why.
The student council president showed her phone to Hachiman. He read the title of the site, it saying "Sobu High School Prom Planning Committee."
Hachiman: "The prom planning committee"?
Yukino: We made an official account, and we're posting the information there.
Y/N: Well, that explains why I didn't here shit about it.
Yukino: (puts on computer glasses) Among the forms of media, our generation has, this one tends to garner the most impressions.
Hachiman: Hoh. I see. Huh? You use it, too?
Yukino: I started one. It's fairly convenient. I can easily acquire coupons and information from stores I like.
Y/N: Me and my siblings all share an account. I'm surprised dear old "dad" hasn't shut ours down.
Yukino: When I send messages, I get sent pictures back and such.
Y/N: Wait a second...does this relate to that one cat cafe?
Yukino: ...
Y/N: (sigh) Not even surprised.
Hachiman: Is that enough, though? There are people her like me that don't use it at all.
Yukino: People who avoid using those sort of platforms typically aren't trying to make connections, so they'd never attend a prom in the first place, right?
Y/N: Extremely convincing.
Yukino: If you have any more questions, please feel free.
Y/N: Can you ban my sister from attending?
Yukino: And letting you get away from being embarrassed? Of course not.
Y/N: Was worth a shot.
Hachiman: I have no questions, but there's something I don't understand. (turns around) It's pretty late in the game for this, but...I don't quite get exactly what a prom is.
Yukino: (stands up from seat) Well then, shall we create an answer to that?
Leaving the student council room, they went to the auditorium. Inside, everything was decorated. There was a disco ball, streamers and other party items hung from the upper levels. The stage was decorated with balloons.
Yui: This is amazing.
Yukino: I'll give you a more detailed explanation later, but for now, can you please go change?
Y/N: Change for what?
Yukino: There are costumes for you to change into waiting in the stage wings, so I'd like your support on that end, too, Yuigahama.
Yui: Okay!
The cheery orange haired girl ran off to the backstage area, Hachiman and Y/N glancing up slightly.
Yukino: Isshiki-san didn't tell you two?
Y/N: Well, she certainly didn't.
The three glance to Iroha, who noticed they were talking about her. The girl attempts to shrug it off and resumed back to what she was doing.
Y/N: So? What exactly are we doing?
Yukino: We're making a video to introduce prom. We'll also be making a special page on the school's official website, so we're doing a shoot for that as well. I wanted people to be in the video, so I asked Isshiki-san to choose them.
Y/N: Then are we going to be in this video?
The two boys turn to Iroha, who was next to them and bowing at them repeatedly.
Iroha: I'm sorry, for real. I swear I'll be more careful in the future. It wasn't intentional, it slipped my mind when we got off on that tangent...also, I got all confused because I had to talk with Tobe and his friends, too.
Y/N and Hachiman: Tobe?
Iroha: Yeah, they can pump everyone up, or act as extras or something...I basically invited Tobe and the first years in the soccer club to act as background characters.
Yukino: And for the girls, I asked the people in our class and Isshiki-san's friends.
Hachiman: There are quite a few others, too, huh...?
Y/N: At least I'll be able to disappear into the crowd with this many people. Not unless you have something for me to do. I guess we'll do it.
Iroha: (bows) Thank you!
Hachiman: I mean, it's true that we didn't check the details of the job...
Yukino: (bows head slightly) Thank you. You two are a huge help.
Leading the two boys to the closet, Iroha had wanted to talk to them before hand.
Iroha: Um...what you two said before really hit me just now.
Y/N: (confused) And what was that?
Iroha: Since everything is going too smoothly, I ended up asking people to do a lot more than I realized...I was kinda being careless...
Hachiman: It's fine if you're aware of it now. That small mistake is a cheap price to pay if it ultimately makes you more cautious in the future.
Iroha: Right...I'll be careful.
Y/N: Well, even if you did tell us in advance, Hikigaya over here would've complained, but we'd still probably helped in the end.
Hachiman: He's not wrong.
Y/N: So, uh...you don't have to get so down about things.
Iroha: That's so true! ...Just kidding. I'm gonna be more mindful from now on.
Small Timeskip
In front of a mirror, Y/N was currently adjusting his tie of the suit he was asked to wear. It was a simple black tuxedo with a green tie, which so happened to match the color of his eyes.
He stared at himself in the mirror after adjusting. He scowled slightly as it made him look a little bit like his father, grunting to himself.
Y/N: (thoughts) I'll never be like him...never.
A knocking sound was heard at the door, Y/N turning his head to it.
Yukino: Are you ready?
Y/N: Y-Yeah.
Yukino: Great, looks like it fits well.
Yukino had stepped out from the curtain, a slight blush making it to his face as he sees Yukino was dressed in a tuxedo as well.
As he gazed at the girl, the heat in his cheeks flared, the blush increasing even more. Y/N had only seen her wearing dresses when they visited each other and she once wore a kimono when it was New Years when their family had gotten together.
Yukino had noticed his gaze, which wasn't leaving her. What she didn't realize, Y/N was taking in her beauty. Soon after, a blush started to appear on her face, causing her to rub her arm in nervousness.
Yukino: What?
Y/N: N-No...it's just...what are you wearing? What's going on?
Yukino: (blush increases) It's weird, isn't it?
Y/N: (rubs back of head) N-No, it isn't weird at all...it looks nice on you, actually.
Yukino: Th-Thank you. (whispers) It's been a long time that I've heard a sensible compliment from you.
Y/N: Huh?
Yukino: Nothing.
The girl walked into the room, pacing around Y/N as he awkwardly shuffled on where he stood. She noticed that his necktie was still crooked. Even if it was just slightly. Marching forward, Y/N backed up.
Y/N: Wh-What?
Yukino: Be still.
Listening to what she said, she placed her hands on his upper chest. Her cheeks flared even more when she got close to him. She then began to fix his tie, the only way of fixing it was to do it all over again.
As he hands shuffled, Y/N directed his eyes else where, but his eyes kept wandering down to her. She was only an inch shorter than him, maybe him being taller by at least two or three inches. He then felt her hand pull the necktie down, the fabric being tightened around his neck. She then released her hands, backing up as she extended her hand out to the L/N boy, him looking at it confused.
Yukino: Hand me your cufflinks and your handkerchief.
With a sigh, he handed them over. Yukino fixed the handkerchief into the right breast pocket of his tux and fixed the cufflinks near his wrist on the cloth.
Y/N: (sigh) Isn't this stuff you see at a wedding ceremony? And why are you in a tailcoat?
Yukino: I wanted to take shots of the prom king and queen dancing. I couldn't think of anyone that seemed like they'd dance, so...
Y/N: Yet we've danced before.
Yukino: That's because those were parties. Besides, I can only dance at a casual level. Now then, let's go meet the princess now.
Y/N: I swear if you made it Hikigaya, I will run out of here.
Going outside, Y/N could see the people that had arrived. Surely enough, this was more of Iroha's friends and not people that were of his grade. Sure, Tobe was there, who was mingling with the others, but that's all of the people he knew of his grade aside Hachiman, Yui, and Yukino.
As they waited, Y/N was leaning up against one of the pillars of the auditorium. He always knew he wasn't much of talker, so he simply waited until he was asked to get into his position. The sound of the door being slammed was heard, Y/N looking in the direction. Two people were walking up to them, one of them being Yukino. The other person was none other than Iroha Isshiki. Y/N only let out a sigh before he grinned.
Y/N: (thoughts) Well, she wanted to be prom queen.
The crowd were making awed sounds, gushing and ogling at the pair. As soon as Y/N's and Yukino's eyes met, they both quickly looked away. Y/N felt an odd feeling rising within him.
Iroha: (looks to Yukino) This may sound rude, but the feeling of making a beautiful guy serve is awesome! I feel so awesome!
Yukino: Would you mind moving a little further away from me?
The shorter girl only gained a devilish grin, interlocking their arms together. Iroha only gave Yukino a sly grin.
Iroha: It's a gentleman's duty to escort, you know! Wow, I didn't mean to, but I just swooned a little.
Yukino: (sigh) I'm also reflecting on my actions... (looks to everyone) Let's start the photoshoot now. Hikigaya-kun, go call Yuigahama-san.
Hachiman: Got it.
A few seconds had passed and Yui and Hachiman hadn't arrived, so Yukino asked to go get them. He begrudgingly moved from his spot, him already being comfortable.
He made his way to the backstage, him hearing voices.
Yui: This dress is excessive! I feel kinda exposed!
Saki: Don't move.
Yui: Okay. Um...I want the dress to be tighter around my waist.
Saki: What? But you'll be dancing soon, right? Won't it be too tight?
Yui: I can handle it!
Y/N arrived near the backstage, knocking on the wall next to him.
Y/N: Yukino says to hurry up. What's taking so long?
Instead of answering his question, Saki only let out an irritated sigh. She tightened the dress around Yui's waist, just as Yui wanted. Yui reeled her face in pain as she could feel the tightness.
Saki: (lets go) There, you're good now. Do your own makeup.
Yui: Oh, right! Saki, thanks!
Saki: Bye, I'm going home! Hey, Y/N!
Y/N: Hmm?
Saki: Setsuna-nee says to hand over your measurements as soon as you get over to our house tonight.
Y/N: Sure. Thanks for your hard work.
Hachiman: Sorry, seems like we asked for your help so suddenly.
Saki: It really was sudden. The hemline is long and those heels are high, so be careful until she's used to it.
Hachiman: Huh? O-Okay.
The blueish-haired girl leaves, patting Y/N on the back as she leaves through the door. Telling them to hurry up once more, Y/N leaves the room, heading back to his place.
Soon after, Yui and Hachiman could be seen walking out of the backstage area. Getting up from his spot, he was going to where he needed to be directed.
Timeskip
Iroha: It's break time!
Iroha, Yukino, and Y/N were by the laptop that was off to the side. Everyone else was mingling about, enjoying the drinks and snacks.
Yukino: This is what it looks like, then?
Iroha: Yes...it's stylish and pretty, and you can hear the cheering from the crowd, but...
Y/N: You guys are making it look like you're in a hardcore dance competition or something.
Yukino: Y-You're right. It didn't really turn out how I envisioned it would.
Iroha: (closes laptop) Well, we can still use it! This will work for our couples' dance footage, right? I want to get more of people partying, though.
Yukino: Should we take a shot of everyone dancing? (looks to Hachiman and Yui) I'd like to follow you two with the camera as the main dancers.
Hachiman/Yui: Huh?
Yui: Er...do you think we're good enough?
Yukino: It's a role that requires you to stand out, so I feel a little hesitant to ask anyone else. If this will be too difficult, we'll consider another method.
Yui: Uh, no, that's not a problem...if you're okay with it, I don't mind.
Getting into their places, Y/N stood with Yukino atop the stage. Yui and Hachiman stood in the middle of everyone else, each with their respective dance partners. Y/N signals for one of them to cut the lights, the lights turning off as the star in the middle of the room that hanged from the ceiling lit up.
The light being scattered from the disco ball shimmered the room, the music playing as everyone began to dance. Yukino held the camera up so she could record everything. As Y/N kept staring at the scene, it reminded him of the dances his mother and Yukino's mother would set them up with. They were around seven at the time. Despite being young, they learned the slow dance moves very quickly, the two of them moving in sync. He couldn't help but imagine the memory. The music then changed, the blue light it was showing before was now red. Everyone was now doing a more up-tempo kind of dance, the one they could note the best dancing at the moment was Tobe.
As the dance went on, Y/N's eyes widen once more as he remembered a new memory. It was late at night, on the large balcony of Yukino's home, both him and her were slow dancing in the moon light. For some odd reason, it brought a smile to his face.
