S3, Chapter 1: Another Day Out

Apologies for the long wait. I have been overall busy and with this week even being more hectic, me having to go in person on Wednesday for school because of my CTE class and also my wisdom teeth removal on Thursday.

Anyway, here is the first chapter of season three. Enjoy.

---

It was the next day in the L/N apartment complex. Y/N didn't remember how many hours it's been since the "date" with the other Service Club members, but there has been a long silence. It seemed like a long story. Nevertheless, his life has been long, at least to him. The one question that remained on his mind.

"Who was his light"?

That's what he'd always wonder. His mother is what his light was before, but she had met a tragic end, leaving Y/N's personality to shatter. But he still pressed on. Unknown to him, something, or rather, someone was waiting for him. He just didn't know it yet.

Before, Night

On the so called "date," it was nighttime. Yui, Y/N, and Yukino were under a covered area, the two girls sitting on the bench with Y/N leaning up against the wooden post.

The two were startled when Hachiman had walked up to them, handing them a drink. Y/N had turned around slightly, extending his hand as he caught a MAXX can coffee from Hachiman. Yui and Yukino go into their pockets to owe him, but Hachiman just shakes his head left and right, denying it.

With a smile, the two take their drinks, Hachiman taking his own MAXX coffee can and opens it, silently drinking it. Y/N was halfway finished with his, him staring out at the nearby trees as the snow fell.

Yukino: That's very pretty.

Yui: Yeah! I searched for lots of different kinds of bags and colorful masking tape!

Hachiman: Colorful "Namaste?" Isn't that some sort of greeting in India?

Y/N: (sigh) She said masking tape, dumbass.

Yukino: That's some particular useless knowledge for someone who doesn't even give a proper greeting.

Hachiman: Don't be dumb. A simple greeting can create an atmosphere for conversation, right?

Y/N: (shrugs) I guess.

Hachiman: The standards of greeting are essential knowledge.

Yukino: A greeting counts as a conversation to you, doesn't it?

Hachiman: Yes. That's why I try to do it as little as possible.

Yui: Hikky, that's really bad.

The other black haired teen was leaning against the opposite post Y/N was at. Yui could see that Hachiman was holding onto the cookie bag she had given to him earlier.

Yui: I have no confidence in how it tastes, but since I did do my best...

Hachiman: Yeah, I can understand that.

Yui: Right? That's what you told me. I'm showing that I tried!

Flashback, Yui's Memories

On their first day of Y/N and Hachiman being Service Club members, Yui had come to the three members of her request, making cookies. Cooking utensils and baking ingredients were on the table, along with two plates.

On one of the plates was a normal batch of cookies while the other had a burnt batch. Yukino was laying her head on the table, burying her face into her arms in disappointment. Yui on the other hand stared at her own, tilting her head in confusion.

Yui: It's totally different from Yukinoshita-san's.

Yukino: How am I supposed to make you understand?

Hachiman: You know, I've been wondering...

Y/N: Wondering what?

Hachiman: Why are these two trying to make cookies taste good?

Small Timeskip in flashback

Yui was then seen throwing various things, Y/N and Yukino standing off to the side as Hachiman dodges the items.

Hachiman: Well, basically, you know, guys are simple creatures. They get the wrong idea from just getting talked to. They'd be happy just getting handmade cookies. They don't need to taste good.

Yui: Would you feel moved, Hikky?

Flashback End

Hachiman: ...You remember that?

Y/N: Obviously. You could've died if you tried tasting those.

Yui: Y-You don't have to specifically say that part, L/N-san! (clears throat) W-Well, maybe. Not sure if I remembered, or I just couldn't forget.

Y/N: (thoughts) I remember it clear as day, though.

Yui: I was kinda surprised at first.

Both Hachiman and Yui laugh awkwardly.

Yui: B-But, you've always been like that, Hikky, so I'm used to it.

Yukino: Right, you're constantly falling short of expectations.

Yui: That's true!

Y/N: Eh. Sounds about right.

Hachiman: Uh, I don't think that only applies to me, though. Same goes for you, right, Miss I'll-Do-Without?

Y/N: Huh?

Yukino: What do you mean by that questionable nickname?

Y/N: Well, you did have that sort of clueless side of you sometimes, Yukinoshita.

Yui: (nods vigorously) He's right!

Yukino: (looks to Yui) Aren't you the clueless one?

Yui: That isn't true!

Y/N: Obviously. You're the dumb girl.

Yui: That isn't true either, L/N-san! I am not!

Yukino: Yes, you are.

Yui: I am not!

Y/N: Yeah, you are.

Small Timeskip

The four of them were now walking back home, Yui and Yukino walking side by side, Y/N and Hachiman in the back as they had their hands in their pockets.

Yui: It stopped snowing.

Yukino: I heard it was snowing on the day I was born.

Y/N: Ah, I remember now. Kaa-san told us that story.

Yukino: That's why my name is Yukino. Simple, right?

Yui: But it's a wonderful, beautiful name.

Hachiman: Yeah...it's a nice name.

Y/N: (scratches cheek awkwardly) Yeah...it's a...beautiful name.

Yukino: (blushes slightly) A-Arigato. ...My mother chose it. Though, that's just what I heard from Nee-san.

Hachiman: ...Yukinoshita, will you tell us about yourself?

Yukino: (deep breath) ...I don't mind if you ask.

She pauses as she felt a hand grasp hers. She looked to see it was Yui, the orange haired girl giving a smile.

Yui: I always though it'd be better to just wait. Up to now, you've told us stuff, little by little.

Yukino: (smiles) Yuigahama-san. You asked me what I wanted to do, didn't you? But I don't really know. A long time ago, there were things I want to do, and things I wanted to do.

Yui: Huh? Things you wanted to do?

Yukino: My father's job.

Yui: (gasps) But that's...

Yukino: Right. Since I have an older sister, I don't get to decide that. My mother has always made the decisions. For a long time now, my mother has decided everything...she tied my sister down, and only told me to do what I wanted. That's why I didn't know how to conduct myself. I still don't know, even now.

"Yukino-chan, do you even have your own identity?"

Yukino: It's truly just like my sister said.

The green-eyed boy only looked down. Comparing his and Yukino's life, they were drastically different. While they weren't living with their parents, Yukino was somewhat on talking terms with her parents. But Y/N and his siblings want nothing to do with their father. They were abandoned, their mother was the only one watching them at the time.

It wasn't until Sarashiki had passed, Hirmada attempted to control his children, but they left at the time. They left to fend for themselves, living on their own and relying on each other. It was until two years after their mother's death that they started to rely on the Kawasaki's, Itsuki and Setsuna at the time looking for jobs to gain money in order to get back on their feet and find their place to stay. While Saki and her family didn't mind that Y/N and his siblings stayed at their house, the L/N siblings felt they were a burden towards the Kawasaki family, always apologizing everyday about their situation. But Saki and her family always denied their apologies, saying it was okay.

As Y/N looked up, he could see tears beginning to well up in Yukino's eyes.

Yukino: This is the first time anyone's listened to me talk about this.

That was a lie though. Yukino would come to Y/N with these problems when they were much younger, but the years of them being separated had weakened that relationship.

Yui: I see.

Yukino: My mother and father have hinted at it before, I think. I don't remember them addressing it directly, though. It may have been because my sister was going to succeed my parents.

Yui: Haruno-san?

Yukino: I don't think they ever said it. You know what her personality is like.

Yui: Oh, I get it.

Yukino: But they should have just told her that. Even if that's not what she wants...maybe there were afraid to hear a proper answer since they didn't check with her. That's why I have to start by verifying things with her...then the next time, I'll decide on my own accord.

Yukino turns around, letting go of Yui's hand as she starts to walk away. The three look to each other momentarily before they follow behind.

Yukino: I won't do it because someone told me to, but because I thought about it carefully, accepted it, and decided to give up. I have only one request. I want the three of you to see this through until the very end. That's all I want.

Hearing her words, there was something else that was implied. Something towards Y/N as well. He couldn't put his finger on it, but he felt hints of affection. He was confused as to what to do.

Timeskip-Kasairinkaikoen Station

Arriving outside of the train station, the four of them head inside so they could end the day, heading home.

Yui: I guess that was your answer then, Yukinon...

Yukino: I may be wrong about that...

Yui: Then in that case...

Yukino: (small smile) But, I...I want to prove that I can do well on my own. If I can do that, then I can truly start.

Yui: You can...truly start...

Yukino: (nods) Yes. I'm going to go back home for a little while and start talking about this from scratch.

Y/N: I guess we can consider that your answer, right?

Yukino: I don't thing you're about that, but...

Hachiman: It doesn't hurt to give it a try, right?

Yui: (nods with a smile) Yeah, I get it. That would count as an answer, too.

Y/N: Yeah...it would.

Yukino: ...Thank you. (smiles) Let's get going.

Timeskip-Yukino's Apartment Building

In the lobby of the youngest Yukinoshita's apartment building, the blue-eyed girl goes into her bag, looking for her key card.

Hachiman: Is You-know-who still there?

Yukino: She might be.

As Yukino prepares her key card for the scanner, they were startled by the familiar, foxy voice of Haruno.

Haruno: Oh look, it's Yukino-chan.

From the doorway near the elevator was the older sibling, her dressed in a winter coat, a pink shirt and white shorts.

Yukino: Nee-san...

Haruno: Welcome home!

She places a hand on Yukino's shoulder, Haruno's cheeks visibly red.

Yukino: (sweat drops) Were you drinking?

Y/N: Wait...if you were drinking, then...

???: Haru-chan! Get back over here! We weren't done yet!

The youngest L/N facepalms, recognizing the drunk voice of his sister. Seeing a drunk Itsuki was bad, but seeing a drunk Setsuna was a typhoon for him.

Y/N: (sigh) I'll be right back.

He leaves, everyone staring at him before Yukino resumes her attention back to her sister.

Haruno: (patting Yukino's shoulder) Well, kind of. Just a bit. More importantly, does this mean you're back?

Yukino: Yes. ...There's something I need to talk to you about.

Present Day, Y/N's Room

As Y/N lied down in his room, the morning sunlight shining through the curtains, barely, he got up. Rubbing his eyes, he exits his room, going to Setsuna's room, the second oldest L/N passed out on her bed like a light. Last night was annoying to him, not only did he have to wake up Itsuki at eleven last night, he had to haul his drunk sister home.

Heading to his living room, he sees Itsuki at the coffee table, his eyes were red. He had headphones covering his ears, which were connected to his phone. Y/N walked up to him, flicking his shoulder. The oldest L/N tiredly takes off his headphones, looking towards his younger sibling.

Itsuki: Yeah...?

Y/N: Hungry?

Itsuki: I...guess.

Y/N: What do you want?

Itsuki: Doesn't matter.

Y/N: Okay.

Heading to the kitchen, he looks through the fridge. First thing he did was prepare coffee, quickly making a mug and setting it down towards Itsuki, who thanks him and heads back to his work.

While it was a normal looking breakfast, Y/N cooked the simple bacon, eggs, and a few slices of tomato on the side. Setting his plate down at the coffee table, he sits down, scrolling through his phone as the two brothers go about their daily life. Setsuna comes in, groggily, as she pours herself a coffee cup and sitting down next to Y/N. As Y/N ate away, he remembered he was still off from school. He was wondering how Taishi's entrance exams were going at the school. As it was nearing the afternoon, Y/N received a call from Saki, wondering if he wanted to go out.

He wasn't one to deny an invitation from his cousin, so he dressed for the causal occasion and went out, walking to where the meeting place was.

Timeskip-Inagekaigan Station

Y/N: Odd seeing you here.

Hachiman: I guess.

Like Y/N, Hachiman was also free from school, his younger sister taking the entrance exams to Sobu as well. The two walked down the street, Y/N knowing where he was going while Hachiman was just walking around, having nothing to do at his own home.

They first stopped at a bookstore, Y/N heading in as his sister requested to pick up a novel she had bought. "The Metronome In Love," was it's name.

After getting it, he leaves, Hachiman following behind. Hachiman notices Y/N stopped, turning his head to the window on his right. Hachiman does so as well and he was met with a peculiar sight. The Kawasaki siblings were inside the cafe, Saki currently wiping Keika's face. Y/N goes inside, Hachiman continuing to stare.

Hachiman: (thoughts) When I think of familiar young girls, I think of Keika Kawasaki. And, when I think of someone completely coddling her, I think of Y/N or...that's right, that Kawasomething!

In the window, Y/N greets his cousins, the youngest one cheering excitedly before she looked outside, pointing, exclaiming something.

Hachiman: (thoughts) Oh man, what the heck!? She's too cute!

Y/N and Saki look to where she was looking, Saki looking to Y/N for answer. Y/N only shrugs, Saki sweat dropping. Keika motions for Hachiman to come in, but Saki objects, trying to say "no" as nicely as possible. The little girl pouts, refusing to look at her older sister while Saki looked shocked, Y/N turning around as he snickers to himself.

Losing the battle, Saki motions for Hachiman to come in. Heading to a chocolate cafe, a wide smile was spread across Keika's face as she had a chocolate delicacy in front of her.

Hachiman: Want a bite?

Keika: (pats Hachiman's arm) I do! This is why I like you, Hachiman!

Y/N: Wait? I thought I was the favorite?

Keika: You are!

Y/N: (satisfied smile) Objective complete.

Hachiman: (awkward laugh) Yes, yes, I know you do. But boys are going to immediately misunderstand that sort of nonchalant touching, so don't do that to anyone else, okay?

Y/N: (thoughts) ...What are you, a pedophile...? Hikigaya...

Keika: Okay! I'll only do that to you, Hachiman!

Y/N: (thoughts) Oi, don't fill her head with useless things! Stop it!

Hachiman: (thoughts) Oh man, if she used her girlish charms as a terrorist, she would already know the powerful words that capture a man's heart! This child is to be feared!

The youngest girl in the room sways side to side with happiness, Y/N and Saki looking to each other before Saki gains an irritated look.

Saki: Whoa, what are you teaching her?

Y/N: Stop teaching her useless things.

Saki: (gets up and whispers) And that's kind of a problem.

Hachiman: Huh?

Saki: (whispers) We haven't even had lunch yet.

Hachiman: Oh.

The three look to Keika, her readying to take a bite out of the delicacy.

Hachiman: (smirks) Okay, let's split it. But keep it a secret from your sister and cousin. Shhh...

Keika: Right! It's a secret! Shhh!

Y/N: Oi...

Saki: We're looking right at you two.

She takes a bite out of the treat, the three teenagers watching the young girl with a smile as Keika enjoys her chocolate.

Saki: Don't go spoiling her, though.

Y/N: Yeah, only I can do that.

Saki: (looks to Y/N) You don't get to do that either.

Hachiman: I-I don't, this is fine once in a while.

Saki: Once in a while is all the time for you, right?

Hachiman: I don't think I do this all of the time. I do this especially for Keika. And for Komachi, too.

Y/N: Siscon.

Hachiman: Idiot, no!

Saki: You have no loyalty, huh?

Hachiman: (thoughts) Yikes! I seriously just do not get girls! Just a "Do you know why I'm mad?" completely stumps me.

Keika: Don't fight.

The three teenagers look to each other, Saki quickly denying the fact.

Saki: We're not fighting. Turn this way, Kei-chan.

She leans forward against the table, Saki cleaning the chocolate off Keika's face. Outside, Hachiman spots a few students walking down the street. They were wearing the Sobu High uniform.

Hachiman: Your brother is taking the entrance exam, too, right?

Y/N: Oh, yeah. How's Taishi doing?

Saki: I don't know. He'd always get such an attitude when I'd ask about it.

Hachiman: Oh. He's at about that age, isn't he?

Y/N: Well, he's always been like that. He probably doesn't want you to worry.

Saki: I personally wouldn't mind if he went to a private school...I mean, if that's what he wants.

Hachiman: I see...

Y/N: Next year, your considering to get into a public school, right?

Saki: Huh?

Hachiman: Your first choice for schools is a national public school, right? Just guessing, but you're probably feeling some pressure from that.

Saki: (tilts head) You're talking about me?

Hachiman: No, no. Well, not far from what I mean, but still wrong.

Saki: What is it then?

Hachiman: Uh, er, look...if your brother can go to a public school, wouldn't that broaden your choices, even if only a little? Just guess, though.

A slight blush appears on Saki's face, smiling a little. It wasn't until she returned to her original, tsundere look.

Saki: Tuition is completely different for high school and university. But...that seems like something he'd say.

Hachiman: Isn't it? I'd understand having a sister complex better than anyone, after all!

Y/N: So you admit, huh?

Hachiman: H-Huh!? I worded that wrong.

Saki: What are you talking about? That's creepy.

Keika: Creepy! Creepy!

Hachiman growls slightly as he looks out the window, a small smile appearing on his face.

Timeskip

Komachi: I'm done! Yay!

Komachi had met up with Hachiman, heading to the same shop they were in. High fiving her brother, who let out a monotone "yay," she turned to Keika.

Komachi: Saki-san, Y/N-san, and Keika, too! Hello, yay!

Keika: (smiles happily) Yay!

The little girl high fives Komachi, the younger Hikigaya looks to Y/N and Saki.

Komachi: Yay!

The two look to each other, both high fiving at the same time.

Y/N and Saki: Y-Yay...

Komachi: Oh wow, I could barely hear that, Saki-san, Y/N-san! Let's try it again, yay!

Y/N and Saki: Y-Yay!

They both high five her hand, increasing the volume of their voices. Afterwards, Saki looks to Hachiman.

Saki: What is up with your imouto?

Hachiman: Sorry about that. She seems pretty hyper right now. (stands up) Komachi, have some water. Drink this and calm down.

Komachi: Thanks! But drinking from your cup is kinda gross so I'm gonna go buy something.

Hachiman: Huh!? Komachi!?

Saki: Just as close as ever, eh?

Komachi: Uh, that's pretty much seriously untrue.

Hachiman: (sweat drops) Komachi...can you stop sounding so serious when you're denying it?

Komachi: (fake smile) To tell the truth, he's super annoying sometimes!

Hachiman: K-Komachi...Komachi!

Komachi: (serious voice) Fine, just kidding, I totally love you.

Hachiman: What? That was a lie. A complete and utter one. I mean, I love you, too, though.

Hearing that word leave Hachiman's mouth causes Saki and Y/N to freeze, Komachi denying it.

Komachi: Ugh, gross. Gross. So gross.

Flashback, Cultural Festival

Back during the cultural festival, as Yui, Yukino, Setsuna, Shizuka, and Meguri were playing a song, Y/N and Saki were sitting at a table, outside of class 2-F.

The two were calmly sitting there, Y/N talking as Saki listens, looking through her phone as she does.

Hachiman: Kawasaki! L/N!

The two look to see Hachiman running up to them, breathing heavily.

Saki: Why are you breathing like that?

Hachiman: You guys were on the roof before, right? How did you get there?

Y/N: You seem to have a good memory.

Saki: From the entrance at the central staircase. The lock there is broken. It's pretty well-known amongst the girls. Why do you need to know that?

Y/N: Still looking for Sagami?

Hachiman: Thank you! (runs off) I love you, Kawasaki!

In shock, Saki drops her phone, Y/N looking back and forth at the two, his mouth agape. Saki blinked a few times before she gasped.

Y/N: Did he just...?

Seconds later, Saki lets out a scream, echoing throughout the school.

Flashback End

Komachi: Ew, he's here, gross. So creepy! Blushing like that towards your sister is gross! Even though you're hopeless anc an only say that to...

Hachiman: Wait, hey...whoa, wait y-you're going too far, you're saying way too much.

Komachi: ...your sister that facial expression is creepy! So creepy!

Hachiman: Your verbal attacks are downright vulgar now. Are you even a little flattered?

Komachi: Onii-chan, that type of thing is for real gross. You are truly talented in your grossness.

https://youtu.be/hwcpMw9GWaE

(A/N): Here's the clip for the scene if you want to see it. I don't own the video.

Giggling could be heard, Y/N, Komachi, and Hachiman looking to see it's Saki.

Saki: I'm going to leave now. I have to head home and cook.

Y/N: See ya, then.

The Kawasaki siblings grab their belongings, Keika turning around and waving goodbye as they leave the store. The others say goodbye as well.

Hachiman: Wanna go eat, too? Did you think about what you wanted?

Komachi: Yeah. I came up with a lot of stuff, but...I wanna go home and do some chores!

Y/N: ...Eh?

Hachiman: Huh? What do you mean?

Komachi: So now...let's go shopping then go home! Y/N-san, come with us!

Y/N: N-No, I--

Komachi: No need to be shy! Let's go!

Now, Y/N was being dragged around by the Hikigaya siblings. First, they went to the supermarket, Komachi examining different products and produce, weighing watermelons, and trying samples.

Getting what they need, they pay for it, Komachi and Hachiman giving each other a thumbs up while Y/N only looked between the two. Afterwards, they went to a store having different claw machines. Y/N waited by the entrance, waiting for the two come back out. In was then he left for home, the Hikigaya siblings heading to a baseball area to practice swings.

By the time he got home, he found Itsuki sitting on the couch, watching TV and Setsuna was cooking.

Y/N: I'm home.

Setsuna: Welcome home. Did you get it?

Y/N: Yeah.

Setsuna: Can you put it in my room?

Y/N: Mm-hm.

Putting the book in Setsuna's room, he returns to his own room, laying down on the bed. A normal day had ended. Tomorrow, it was a return to school.

It was also the next day he'd see her again. He sighs to himself as he goes back out and sits on the lone chair, the black cat they took care of running up to him and finding refuge in his lap.

Y/N: ...Today felt sluggish.

Itsuki: ...Indeed.
