EACH CLICK OF MARGOT'S POLISHED NAILS on the table echoed the tumultuous thudding of her heart beat. Her face, rigid with tension, belied her youthfulness, she seemed to have aged a decade in the past hour.
The class had began to settle after the incident. Parents were called, along with the police. Meaning the Sheriff had arrived not long after.
"Hey kids." The pair of teenagers lifted their gazes from one another towards the Sheriff who had just entered the room. "You guys alright? Margot?" He walked up to her slowly and pulled her closer to him wrapping his arms around her. His embrace was warm, and seemed very protective as he hugged Margot and then his son.
"Yeah, I'm alright. Thanks Sheriff." MJ frowned thinking back to the event that had only just happened minutes before. Stiles, catching sight of her frown, took her hand in his, entwining their fingers together, and gave her her a quick, reassuring squeeze.
The Sheriff looked from both Stiles and MJ before he turned towards Alison and her father. "Mr Argent, you wouldn't have an insight into this, would you?"
"Me?"
"All this bizarre animal behaviour, it's..." At that moment MJ felt her heart drop. The anxiety sat below her smile and her actions as she watched both Argent and the Sheriff. "You must have seen something like this before, right?"
"I'm not sure why I would or why you would think I would."
"I'm sorry. I could've sworn I overheard Stiles and Margot talking about how you were an experienced hunter."
"Not anymore."
After the Sheriff had left the classroom, Stiles had called Scott to inform him what had happened while he was gone.
"We got a serious problem at school."
He heard the werewolfs breathe hitch slightly over the phone. "What? Is everyone OK? Margot?"
"Yeah, yeah we're all fine. Listen, Miss Blake's Class..." Margot heard Stiles begin to explain as he moved from his spot beside her to the other side of the room to ensure no one else heard their conversation, before he walked towards her again.
"Hey, I have to go meet Scott at Derek's. Can I leave you at Alison's?"
Margot shrugged picking up her bag. "No, it's fine you can just drop me home."
"Hey..." He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close, gently rubbing her arm. Despite the heaviness in her stomach, it fluttered at the feeling of her body pressed against his. She sunk into the warmth of his side, appreciative of the simple gesture. His touch made the room warmer somehow, her future within its walls seeming a little less bleak. "I'm not letting you stay at home alone after that. You're going to Alisons."
Margot snuggled in as they walked out of the room, "Always so stubborn."
The boy snickered quietly rolling his eyes, "Well, I have to be being friends with you, don't I?" In that moment the arms squeezed a fraction tighter and MJ breathed more slowly. Her body melting into her friends as every muscle lost its tension before they both made their way to Roscoe and drove to the Argents apartment.
...
"This one. It's perfect." Lydia Martin stated as she raised a pink paint sample against the wall of the agents girls bedroom.
MJ frowned before shaking her head. The colour was nice however, it screamed Lydia Martin rather than Alison Argent. "How about teal?"
"I don't know. I'm still thinking this shade of blue." The said girl replied holding up a dark blue sample.
"Guys, look." She spoke once again after a moment, causing her MJ to lift her gaze back to her friend. Margots brain stuttered for a moment and her eyes took in more light than she expected. Every part of her went on pause while her thoughts caught up, noticing that both bruises on the girls arms were the same.
After the three friends made their way towards Alisons car, they began their journey to Heather's house after Margot had received directions from Stiles.
"Hey, Margot... " Scott trailed as he exited through the front door. The girls eyes and her mouth were frozen wide open in an expression of stunned surprise, and although she was staring straight as Scott she appeared not to notice him at all. "This isn't the talk we were gonna' have, is it?"
"No, no, no..." She spoke hurriedly, shaking her head and stealing a quick glance at the girls behind her before she turned back to her ex-boyfriend. "The girls, they need to show you something. Is Stiles in there?" She asked with uncertainty clear in her voice as she slid her hand into the pocket of her skirt, teeth softly biting into her lower lip.
"Uh... Yeah, yeah." A heavy silence settled over them for a few seconds, thicker than the uneasy tension in the atmosphere. Unsettled eyes glanced unceremoniously around and tried to avoid catching other glances that passed by. "He's inside." Scott watched as her throat bobbed, anxiety written over her face.
"Thank you." She grinned before scurrying inside the house.
Over the roar of music, a distant, hazy chatter could be heard. She couldn’t make out any words, but laughter rang in her ears and wouldn’t seem to stop. The song that was playing got louder, pulling her in and wouldn’t let go. MJ had no choice but to join the crowd, jumping in a huddled group like Tic-Tacs being shaken in a box has she looked for Stiles.
However, Margot James didn't know that once she entered the home of Heather Wright, she would experience her first heartbreak and change the way she felt about one of her best friends forever.
