DDOT HUNG UP the call he was on, kissing his teeth in annoyance, feeling irritated. he had been attempting to make conversation with a girl, but she remained silent throughout, refusing to show her face on camera. hrt complete quietness exasperated him.
in the past, ddot may have tolerated this, but now he found every girl he spoke to be dull and lacking personality.
none of them seemed to have any goals or passions; whenever ddot spoke, she simply echoed his words, which only served to aggravate him.
he wanted to find someone who he could have a meaningful conversation, but it was like every girl with personality seemed to disappear.
"darrian, hurry up, if you kate again your gonna get detention." his mother called out as she popped her head into the room, catching ddot in the midst of searching for his watch.
assuming his mother sighed, "you lost your chain again?"
ddot pursed his lips, shaking his head. "nah i'm jus lookin for my watch."
"alright, just don't lose it, because then you'll gon lose yourself. goodbye, mijo, be good," his mother said as she kissed him on the cheek before walking out of the room.
ddot had a brief moment of panic when he couldn't find his watch, until he finally spotted it buried at the end of the drawer.
after a few minutes of getting ready, he exited his room, grabbing his backpack and phone and quickly texting dd and notti that he was headed to school.
feeling the harsh wind as he stepped outside, ddot shivered and cursed softly as he realized there was snow on the ground, knowing he was wearing his new sneakers and refusing to go back inside to change.
he brushed off the inconvenience, opting to walk to school since it wasn't too far from his house. as he strolled, he noticed an incoming call from the group chat with notti and dd. he quickly plugged in his airpods, connecting them to his phone before tucking the device into his hoodie pocket.
"yo, where ya ass at, ddot?" dd's loud voice blared through the phone, causing ddot to roll his eyes. "shut the fuck up dd. i'm not even two blocks away, just wait. he mumbled back, yawning slightly.
dd audibly sucked his teeth. "you know we got a pep rally today. if we miss that, we'll end up with detention again."
"aii imma be there in a bit." ddot mumbled before ending the call and retrieving his phone. he crossed the street without bothering to look up, walking like he had multiple lives to spare, fully aware that he only had one.
eventually, ddot arrived at the school, spotting dd and botti sharing a blunt at the football field. "yo, we going straight to the gym or we goin to homeroom?" he asked as he dapped them up.
jahzara, who was seated next to them with her head resting on dd's shoulder, shook her head. "we're going to the gym first. it's going to take up two whole periods," she mumbled, shivering slightly.
ddot clicked his tongue in annoyance, considering skipping, but knowing the school took pep rallies seriously and he wasn't willing to risk detention and extra hours after school.
"shit im going in, it's mad cold out here." ddot muttered under his breath, his words disappearing into the cold air. he glanced towards the school building, knowing it would be way warmer then it was outside.
when he stepped inside, the warmth of the school was a stark contrast to the biting cold outside. the halls were full with people, teachers were pacing around, clipboards clutched tightly in their hands, their brows furrowed in stress.
the sight of their frazzled states brought a smirk to ddot's face, his laughter barely audible above the amount of noise .
pulling out his phone, ddot glanced at the time. he had a few minutes to spare, just enough time for a quiet moment in the bathroom before the ringing of the bell signalled the start of the school day.
so that's what he did, he took atleast five hits of the blunt but it was really heavy and strong so when he walked out of the bathroom his eyes were more red than they ever had been. he didn't know how strong the za was until he smoked it, and it was really strong.
true to his plan, ddot indulged in at least five hits from the blunt. it's potency took him by surprise, and upon exiting the bathroom, his eyes were redder than they had ever been. he hadn't anticipated the strength of the marijuana, but it hit him harder than expected.
he did have enough time to go into the gym, searching the bleachers for where dd and notti were at so he could atleast get a good seat. "yo where the fuck were you? we dead thought you left the school." dd whispered yelled.
ddot brushed off their suspicions with a casual wave, "i was just.. peeing." he muttered under his breath. jahzara, notti, and dd exchanged a knowing glance, all too aware that ddot was floating somewhere up in the clouds.
their attention was abruptly pulled away by the sudden start of the marching band. the gym fell into a hushed silence, the only sound being the resonating notes of the trumpets.
without any conscious thought, ddot found himself scanning the crowd for zoey. his eyes landed on her, and he couldn't help but be drawn in. there she was, whispering something into someone's ear, a secret shared between just the two of them.
her soft laughter rang out, pure and unburdened, filling the air around them. it was a sound that seemed to cut through the silence of the gym, making everything else fade into the background.
she held her flute, her fingers gently resting on the keys—it was a sight that left him puzzled, the instrument that he swore he broke.
she looked radiant, her happiness apparent in her eyes and wide smile. dressed in the crisp white and purple band uniform, she looked every bit the quintessential band girl. her hair was neatly tied up in a bun, a few stray strands framing her face, it didn't change how pretty she was since ddot was already mesmerized as soon as his eyes landed on her.
but what left him truly bewildered was her demeanor. she seemed so at ease, so content, as if the events of the past had no bearing on her present. she was laughing, living in the moment, completely oblivious to what he was going through.
it was a sight that left him confused and a little hurt. to him, it seemed as if she didn't care at all about what had happened between them. his heart ached at the thought, but he couldn't tear his eyes away from her.
she was so mesmerizing to him.
ddot eyebrows knitted together in confusion. his mind was filled with questions—ehat was she laughing at? who was making her smile like that?
he didn't understand why he was so invested in her, yet he found himself drawn to her every time. each thought of her was a reminder that they longer had any form of contact.
his eyes stayed on zoey as she adjusted her stance and began to play her part. the moment she started, everything else seemed to fade into the background. he was oblivious to the rest of the world around him.
he didn't care about the others playing their instruments. his focus was solely on her. his eyes were locked onto her, and he was unable to look away.
ddot was so out of it, he didn't even realize how intensely he was staring at zoey. the way her eyes sparkled, the way her lips moved when she spoke, he was just in awe.
as she finished her part and lifted her head up, she was met with ddot's gaze. it was so blatant, so obvious, she couldn't even attempt to convince herself that he was looking at someone else.
"yo ddot." dd, who was sitting next to him, whispered so lowly that only frog could hear. "everybody up in this bitch can tell you looking at her ass. dumbass nigga." his words caused ddot to shove him away, a clear sign of his irritation.
but even after being called out, ddot couldn't tear his eyes away from zoey. she caught him staring at her, and in a moment of embarrassment, he quickly lowered his gaze. he didn't know why he was acting this way, and he didn't want to dig deeper into it.
after a moment, ddot lifted his head back up, his eyes once again finding zoey. she was sitting down now, the performance had ended. the conductor took the stage, his voice echoing through the microphone, but ddot was far away in his own world.
his thoughts were a whirlwind, spinning so fast that he felt dizzy. he couldn't focus, couldn't pay attention to what was happening around him. he felt like he was on the verge of passing out, his mind completely consumed by the girl he swore he would hate for the rest of his life.
he felt the urge to attempt to speak with her again, despite being aware that it might not be beneficial for either of them. it felt strange, given his usual aversion to interacting with people who wanted nothing to do with him.
but when it came to zoey, it was different somehow.
suddenly, the band students were all getting up, rising from their seats in a synchronized motion. they formed an line, their instruments glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights, and began to file out of the area.
ddot's gaze was locked onto zoey, his attention riveted on her. he was studying her every move, every flicker of emotion that crossed her face, every gesture she made.
as the pep rally continued, he observed zoey zoey and the other participants in the event did not return to the gym. feeling a sense of uncertainty, he impulsively stood up and walked out of the gym while everyone else was engrossed in the game.
regretting began to seep in as he realized he was already high and unsure about engaging zoey in conversation, even though that's what he wished to do the most.
ddot walked through the hallways, his vision blurry and his thoughts muddled as his mind drifted in a drowsy haze, uncertain of his destination.
suddenly, a collision with another person jolted him back to awareness. frowning, he looked down to confront the individual who had bumped into him. it felt like a wave of déjà vu when he witnessed the person bending down to retrieve something, and as she straightened up, their eyes met in a direct gaze.
her eyes, that used that sparkle were now dull. but even so, she managed to pull off a smile in his direction, a small, fleeting one that didn't quite reach her eyes.
this time, it was she who turned her back on him, walking away without uttering a single word, leaving him standing there, watching her retreating figure.
a frown creased ddot's forehead, his lips pursing in thought. he leaned against a locker, his body casting a long, dark shadow over the cold metal surface. he laid his head against the locker, the coolness of the metal seeping through his skin, as he tried to make sense of what had just happened.
soey was stuck in her final class of the day, an annoyed look permanently fixed on her face. she'd just returned from yet another lecture about her plummeting grades, but it wasn't her fault. How could they expect her to keep up when she'd lost her mom and so much more in just a month?
now, she was fuming. everyone kept pointing out how much she'd changed, and she was well aware. but their constant reminders weren't fixing anything.
her head was resting on her desk, the soft melodies of frank ocean's "wiseman" filtering through her airpods at a volume that still allowed her to stay aware of her surroundings.
Without even lifting her head, she sensed someone settling in the seat next to her, prompting her to turn her head to identify the newcomer.
rot some reason, she hadn't anticipated it, but of course, it was ddot who had chosen to sit beside her. she straightened up, flipping open her chromebook as the teacher's instructions echoed around the room.
the silence between them was deafening, and the awkwardness was palpable, even without words.
ddot was looking straight at her side profile as she typed on the laptop. "yo—can i use a pencil?" ddot blurted out nervously since he just wanted to find a way to talk to her but he conduct. come up with anything than that corny one.
zoey didn't even turn her face to look at him, lowering her body down to get a pencil and handing it to him.
ddot bit his lip noticing her pissed of expression. "you good?" he asked for some reason while zoey just let out a sigh, "mhm." she hummed before pursing her lips together.
that was the moment when ddot realized that the happiest girl he used to know was different. and he was gonan try to do everything in his power for her to come back.
