XVII. Crowned in the Sky

The robots had been dealt with, crushed underfoot or outsmarted by the agility and strength of the students. But now, it was time for the next true test: The Fall. A vast canyon, its jagged edges sharp enough to split the sky itself, waited for its challengers.

To cross it, one could only use the tightropes that spanned the chasm, like silver threads dangling in the air, swaying under the weight of doubt. It was a test of balance, precision, and nerves. Some might say it was a test of the heart, too, as the sheer drop below could steal the breath from your lungs.

Mei Hatsume, ever the innovator, had a different idea. Dressed in her eclectic assortment of gear—her goggles perched atop her head like a crown, her jumpsuit glinting with metallic accents—she was already buzzing with energy, a whirlwind of creation ready to unveil her genius. Mei was a student from the Support Course, a category often dismissed or overlooked, but she had always known how to level the playing field.

With a quick flourish, she activated her gadgets—mechanical wings, grapple hooks, boosters, and all manner of devices she'd perfected in secret. As she took her first step onto the thin rope, the crowd held its breath. Click, whirr, whoosh! With a leap, she shot forward, her boosters giving her the perfect momentum. She moved like a machine, a symphony of gears and technology, leaving Mina and Ochaco standing below, their gazes full of awe.

"This is it!" Mei announced with a grin, her voice crackling through the intercom. "Support Course students don't just survive the game, they redefine the rules!"

The crowd cheered, and Mei sailed across The Fall, her silhouette outlined against the setting sun. But even as her triumph resounded, Y/N had other plans.

From the edge of the cliff, Y/N unfurled her wings—red and glowing like the embers of a sunset. Her wings caught the light, flaring out with a deep, rich color that sent waves of heat through the air. With a single powerful beat, she was airborne, soaring above the canyon as if the world below had no weight. Her form was fluid, graceful, a contrast to the meticulous engineering Mei relied on. She didn't need gadgets. She didn't need ropes. Her flight was effortless, and the crowd watched in awe as she danced above them, her wings cutting the wind like a knife.

But then, the final obstacle loomed ahead—a gauntlet that none had expected. The ground trembled, the air crackled, and an ominous pulse echoed from the depths of the canyon. A pressure-sensitive field stretched before them, its edges sharp and volatile. It was a trap, designed to obliterate anyone who dared trigger it. It would take nothing more than a single misstep or faulty gadget, and the entire area could be turned into an inferno.

Y/N hovered, her heart steady as she surveyed the scene. She could easily fly over the hazard, sure, but it wasn't her safety at stake. Her focus shifted to the others—the students below, who could very well set off the trap. Any wrong move would mean disaster.

"Stay back," Y/N's voice rang out, calm but firm. Her red wings glowed with intensity as she prepared herself, not just to fly, but to protect. The crowd held its breath as she waited, calculating the best course of action, all the while aware that one mistake could lead to disaster.

The final stretch was approaching, and the air was thick with tension as the remaining students eyed the ominous terrain before them. Y/N, her wings fluttering like the wind itself, hovered just above the ground, her tail swishing as she watched her friends carefully. Izuku, panting as he caught up to Shoto and Katsuki, shot a glance in her direction, his brows furrowing.

"What? We can't just skip this part," Izuku panted, clearly out of breath but determined. Y/N twitched her tail, her reptilian features tense with quiet concern as she heard his words.

"If you set them off, you'll be hurt," she warned, her voice calm but firm, a low rumble in her throat.

Katsuki, never one to listen to reason, sneered and snapped, "Don't think you can win this with your wings, lizard bastard!" Without another word, he charged at her, his eyes blazing with the same fiery intensity he always carried. He lunged for her tail, his hands aiming to catch the long, sinuous appendage. But Y/N was faster.

In a fluid, practiced motion, her tail whipped out of his reach, the tips of her wings catching the air as she effortlessly dodged him. "You'll try harder than that, little firecracker," she teased, a smirk tugging at her lips.

Izuku could only watch in awe as Y/N soared into the sky, her wings a brilliant flash of crimson against the smoky air. Her agility was unmatched, and while the ground below was littered with dangerous traps, she was far above it all, drifting effortlessly in the safety of the skies.

From the intercom, Present Mic's voice boomed, his trademark energy cutting through the tension in the air. "Kind words from you, Y/N, but we will never hurt our students that greatly. These aren't real mines—just smoke!"

Y/N hummed thoughtfully, her snout twitching slightly as she listened, her sharp eyes scanning the field below. "Smoke, huh?" she mused, clearly not entirely convinced, but her wings flared out in a brilliant display. She hovered above her friends, her gaze briefly locking with Izuku's, offering a reassuring nod before focusing on the challenge ahead.

The smoke mines below would trigger if anyone set foot too close, and though Present Mic had reassured them it was only smoke, the sheer danger of being near them had Y/N on high alert. She wasn't about to let anyone get hurt, especially not when the stakes were this high.

As she soared higher, her tail curled with a defiant flick. Katsuki, now seething with frustration, glared up at her, but he wasn't about to give up. "Get down here, you damn winged freak!" he shouted, still furious.

Y/N's laugh was almost musical, her wings catching the wind as she swooped higher, keeping just out of his reach. "Catch me if you can, Bakugou," she taunted, her voice laced with playful challenge. From above, she had the perfect vantage point. If the mines went off now, there was no way they'd reach her, leaving her free to navigate the challenge without worry.

Her friends, both on the ground and in the air, still had their own battles to fight—but Y/N had hers well in hand, her wings a shield and her instincts a keen weapon.

The arena was still buzzing with the aftershocks of the explosive finale, but it was clear that the victory was already in Y/N's grasp. The bombs had gone off around her in a whirlwind of smoke, their harmless but imposing presence only a backdrop to her final, graceful descent. With a beat of her wings, she landed at the finish line with the kind of elegance that could make even the most hardened competitor pause in awe.

"AND WE HAVE OUR RACE'S WINNER, L/N Y/N FROM CLASS 1-A! EVERYONE, GIVE THIS QUEEN SOME LOVE!" Present Mic's voice echoed across the stadium, his usual hype overflowing with infectious excitement.

The crowd erupted into cheers, and roses, soft petals drifting through the air, rained down upon Y/N in an unexpected display of adoration. She blinked in surprise, the delicate blooms brushing against her wings and hair as the applause washed over her. But as the scent of the roses filled the air, she couldn't help but keep a sharp eye on the competition, still alert despite the celebration.

And then, like a storm on the horizon, Katsuki's voice cut through the cheering.

"Argh, you aren't gonna win the next one, lizard freak!" he snarled, charging at her with a ferocity that only he could muster. His hands crackled with energy as he aimed to take her down, his usual bravado and stubbornness apparent in the way he lunged.

Y/N's eyes gleamed with a flash of humor, her tail flicking with ease as she sidestepped him in a fluid motion. She didn't even break a sweat as she allowed him to miss, her wings fluttering slightly in a teasing, almost lazy gesture.

"I didn't mean to win, but it won't worry me," she replied coolly, a smirk playing at the corners of her mouth.

Katsuki growled in frustration, but before he could make another move, Present Mic's voice boomed once more, calling out the final standings of the race. The results flashed up on the screens, ranking the students by their performance. Y/N stood proud at the top, but the next event was already looming on the horizon—the Cavalry Battle.

"Alright, folks! Time to move on to the next challenge, the Cavalry Battle! The top forty-two qualifiers will now form teams, and you'll need to steal headbands to earn points! The value of your team's headbands will be based on the points of your individual members, determined by their placement in the obstacle race," Midnight announced, her voice sultry and confident as she set the stage for what was sure to be another wild event.

Y/N's victory, however, carried with it the kind of pressure only a top contender could understand. With her first-place finish, her headband now held a staggering worth of ten million points. And, as the realization spread through the other competitors, one thing became clear: whoever took her down could essentially win it all.

The moment her fellow students caught sight of her worth, Y/N felt their gazes snap in her direction. She could practically hear the wheels turning in their heads, strategizing how they would take her down. Her presence alone made her the prime target of the competition, and she could already feel the shift in the air. A snarl curled in her throat, low and warning as she bared her teeth just slightly. She didn't need to speak—her expression alone was enough.

A few of the other students hesitated, some pausing for just a moment before looking away, unwilling to risk the fury in her eyes. The others, however, just as quickly understood the unspoken threat.

"If you want it," Y/N muttered, her voice a soft growl, "you'll have to fight for it."

The arena hummed with new tension, the competitors now sizing each other up and forming their teams with a sharp, calculated look in their eyes. Y/N didn't need to do anything to assert her dominance. The very idea of facing her was enough to make others reconsider their strategy. As they moved to form their teams, she remained standing tall and unbothered, her wings flexing behind her as a reminder of the power she wielded.

The battle was about to begin, and Y/N was more than ready to take on whoever dared to challenge her.
